Top Panels of the Week - 2/14/18

Comic Frontline is starting a new segment where the crew picks their Top 5 comic panels from the week, and then you guys get to vote below which panel was your favorite. In next week's post I will announce the winner from the poll.

Fan Panel Pick From Last Week - Batman #40 "Up Up And Away! DUH!"

Kat

5. Kill Or Be Killed #16 - When Did You Realize The World Sucked?

One of the most intriguing aspects of this series is the point of view/monologue Brubaker gives to Dylan's character.

4. Archie #28 - What Is Betty And Veronica’s Ship Name?

Betty and Veronica are going to the dance together!

3. Batgirl And The Birds of Prey #19 - Fighting Crime With A Computer?

The opening scene between Jim and Barbara was a delight, we really don't get to see them interacting enough these days.

2. Detective Comics #974 - The Bat Means Don’t Kill!

What a powerful scene! Cassandra's reaction shows how much she has grown as a character. The bat symbol means don't kill, and that is important to Cassandra in relation to her past.

1. Ms. Marvel #27 - The Costume Doesn’t Make The Hero

One of the my favorite aspects of this series is Zoe's character development, and I'm glad to see it in full display for this issue. Zoe goes from selfish bully to selfless hero!

BRANT

5. Marvel Two-In-One #3 - Fantastic Thinking

The Mad Thinker decides to become the new Reed Richards. And we thought he was mad before!

4. Avengers #680 - Rogue Goes Rogue!

In light of what happened to Johnny (or what she thinks happened), Rogue goes out for revenge more than justice!

3. Kick-Ass #1 - Kicking A$$, Doesn't Care About the Names!

At their mercy, seemingly defeated and helpless, about to be shot, she just tears the room apart and stands there smiling. Awesome!

2. Amazing Spider-Man Annual #42 - There's No Telporting in High Fantasy!

Yes, it's technically three panels, but any Game of Thrones fan will greatly appreciate the joke about teleportation in that last panel!

1. Old Man Hawkeye #2 - See Me Now?

This made me laugh more than it should, but the art sold the line, and it was hilarious! Obvious joke, sure, but still a good one!

CHRIS

5. New Super-Man And The Justice League Of China #20 - Super Kiss!

Did NOT see that coming!

4. Detective Comics #974 - Death Scene!

Clayface is Really Dead... No Smiles.

3. Detective Comics #974 - How Could You!

You Messed Up Batwoman.

 2. The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #16 - Spider-Mom!

Spider Mom...ing.

 1. Invincible #144 - Kid Invincible!

Invincible The Second.

JAY

5. Dark Knights Rising- The Wild Hunt #1 - You Don't Know My Life!

I love this scene, not just as a classic Teen Titans fan, or a Raven Fan, this is something everyone can relate to. We are so often defined by other people because of what we wear, the music we listen to, who our family is, but Raven reminds them all that she is who SHE is.

4. Invincible #144 - InvinciGirl!

Why can't she get pants? Anyway. I always joke with Kat that Casey (Like Father, Like Daughter) should be called InvulnerGirl by people and when I seen this the first thing that popped into my mind? InviniGirl LOL. I think she really grew up to be like her father.

3. Archie #28 - The Real Mob Wives Of Riverdale High!

If you are watching Riverdale right now this panel speaks volumes. I love how Betty is using Veronica and Veronica not noticing, but going all Godmother over territory.

2. Detective Comics #974 - This Symbol Special!

I love the bond that Cassandra has with Clayface. I also love how she states very simply that the Bat symbol means something, it means they do not kill. In this scene Cassandra could have killed Kate before anyone could intervene but she didn't because she knows what the symbol means.

1. Amazing Spider-Man - Renew Your Vows #16 - With Great Loss!

So often we see Peter and we forget that he is an orphan. Sure he had Aunt May and Uncle Ben there for him, but he never had his Mom and Dad and in raising his daughter we see that time doesn't make things easier.

MIKE SPIDER-SLAYER

5. Old Man Hawkeye #2 - Only "Eye" Can See

You have to laugh, out of all characters the Orb hanging out with a couple of hot cosplayers, and the Namorita cosplayer suggests dressing up as Namor if you like that kind of thing had me dying.

4. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #38 - OW!

Eradicator Superman evaluating Hal Jordan's Green Lantern ring and then all the sudden it busts through the case, blows his brains out, and then he falls on the floor lifeless until he has to reboot again.

3. Kill or Be Killed #16 - The Killer Revealed

In this panel we found out who the copy cat vigilante was. My mouth dropped.

2. Sideways #1 - Get Out!

Your first impression of Derrick... Is this guy a perv?? Rifting into this girls bathroom?

1. Invincible #144 - Shut Up So I Can Punch You

Terra being her dad's champion was just priceless getting ready to take on that big beast was awesome. And made me think man we could have an invincible spin-off book with Terra in it.

This year is the 25th Anniversary of  Saban’s Power Rangers, a franchise that is well known for it's toyline. This week is also Toy Fair 2018 where Saban Brands has made a few big announcements concerning their Power Rangers line. Hot off the news that they were ending their 25 year long relationship with Bandai America and teaming up with Hasbro, Tomashii Nations showcased some new Mighty Morphin Power RangersSH Figuarts. The new figures are helmetless figures of Red Ranger Jason and Green Ranger Tommy.

Each figure is modeled after the original actors Austin St. John and Jason David Frank that brought these iconic characters to life in the 1990s. The figures used digital technology bring the likeness of the actors to these highly detailed figures with numerous points of articulation, and allows you to swap their human heads with their Power Rangers helmets.

The toys will release later in 2018, no exact date or price has yet to be announced. There are currently plans to release the remaining Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team as helmetless SH Figuarts. This could change though depending on the sales of these two figures.

Marvel Gets A "Fresh New Start" In May!

A FRESH START

Marvel has announced big changes coming in May 2018. Marvel May 2018 Solicitations are due to drop this Thursday and to prepare us they announced "A Fresh Start".  The new line-wide Fresh Start includes; New Creative Teams! New Series! New Directions! New Beginnings! UPDATED

The Fresh New Start includes relaunches with a lot of the Legacy numbering reverting back to #1, but some series may not do away with them altogether. Some legacy numbering may remain in a “subordinate fashion” on select titles, according to Executive Editor Tom Brevoort, but didn’t specify which ones. Marvel wants to ensure their numbering isn’t confusing to readers — particularly those new or lapsed ones.

There is one book that we know will receive a brand spanking new #1, Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness’ Avengers, which gets a new #1 issue when it launches in May following the current No Surrender weekly event.
“We wanted to get back to a small, core lineup. With big, iconic characters at the heart of that. So we get Steve, Tony, and Thor Odinson back together at the heart of this new team, and the rest of the team we build around them over the course of the first arc. My aim with this series is basically, if you only read one Marvel comic -- not that you should read just one Marvel comic, but if you did -- if you picked this book up, this would show you the landscape of the Marvel universe issue after issue. We want to feature the biggest characters and go to the coolest, most exotic locations around the Marvel U.”
— Jason Aaron

Aaron, the writer of Marvel Legacy will split the series between the present day Avengers and the Avengers B.C. The two stories will be bridged by a threat involving the Celestials. Preview cover and art for Avengers #1 gives us a sneak peek at the line-up of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider. Doctor Strange is reported to occupy a "rotating slot" on the team, which will feature various members over different arcs.

Another new #1 you can expect is Venom #1 by writer Donny Cates (Doctor Strange, Thanos) and artist Ryan Stegman (Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, Uncanny Avengers). The new series will see the Venom symbiote and current host Eddie Brock taking on a threat 1,000 years in the making.
“It’s unlike any foe Eddie, or the Symbiote has ever faced. It’s something that’s incredibly old, and unbelievably powerful with ties to not only the symbiote’s dark past but the Marvel Universe itself. This is a horror story thousands of years in the making.”
— Ryan Stegman
“Things are not great for Eddie as our story begins. Something has happened to his other that….well, I don’t want to spoil too much, but for the first time in a very long time, Eddie is scared of his own shadow. Something is changing between them. And it’s…disturbing, to say the least. But I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s a symbiote-focused story really. The greatest Venom stories, to me at least, are a mixture of the alien outside and the human inside.”
— Donny Cates
“This is the biggest, most ambitious thing I’ve ever attempted for sure. It’s such an incredible honor to be steering the Venom ship during this amazing time in the characters life. With the 30th anniversary and the movie this year, we certainly wanted to shoot for the moon here. The ramifications of the Venom title will be felt line-wide in the months and years to come. If y’all thought Thanos and Strange were insane…well, strap in, because you ain’t seen nothing yet.”
— Donny Cates

Blüdhaven's Protector Faces Off Against High-Tech Mystery Villain In Nightwing #44!

Blüdhaven’s Protector Faces Off Against High-Tech Mystery Villain in Issue #44

Beginning this May, writer Benjamin Percy will pen new stories for DC’s ongoing NIGHTWING monthly comic book series. After making his DC debut with DETECTIVE COMICS, Percy then jumped into GREEN ARROW, and has spent the last two years “happily inhabiting the disturbed mind of Damian Wayne for TEEN TITANS.”

“The best way to approach NIGHTWING is as a high-octane, adrenaline-fueled mystery and adventure. I’m going to crank up the volume on that world, dose it full of steroids and poison, and dream up a digital nightmare that will ultimately impact the entire DCU.”
— Benjamin Percy

Percy’s NIGHTWING, beginning with issue #44 on May 2, launches with a big, bold, game-changing storyline, “The Bleeding Edge,” that will lay the groundwork for a centrally important threat to the DCU. And, says Percy, “it is ironically Nightwing’s off-the-radar status that makes him the ideal detective for the case.
“Consider how Gotham and Blüdhaven are shadow-soaked, crime-ridden environments. One of the things I love about Nightwing is his irrepressible optimism. This joy—a love of the game, a showman’s theatricality—is tonally essential to my approach. I see it as a necessary counterweight to material that might otherwise feel oppressively grim. In this way, Grayson really captures the hopeful maxim that has defined the Rebirth era.”
— Benjamin Percy

In this arc, change is on the horizon when a new technologist sets his sights on Blüdhaven, creating a holographic, interconnected city where everyone is an individual and part of a larger network. It’s the internet made physical. Gentrification on gigabyte-laced steroids. But when this new utopia encroaches on his turf, Nightwing starts to uncover a sinister plot based not on revenge…but on a reckoning.

Joining Percy in May will be artist Christopher Mooneyham.
“He's got a tight line, cinematic vision, and can ground one moment in emotional realism and elevate the next to eye-popping levels of super-heroic awesomeness.”
— Benjamin Percy

NIGHTWING #44 arrives in stores May 2nd. Attached is a first-look at Declan Shalvey’s cover for the issue. Fans can also expect variant covers by Yasmine Putri.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #24 - Shattered Grid Prelude Review!

Previously in Power Rangers: The Rangers defeat Rita's evil Green Ranger breaking the spell and bringing him to their side. Rita teams up with the mysterious Black Dragon who turns out to have been created from the Dragonzord. When the Rangers defeat the Black Dragon, Tommy and Billy are sent to its parallel universe where Tommy never joined the Power Rangers but instead joined Rita conquering the world gaining the powers of both the Green and White Rangers becoming Lord Drakkon. After defeating Drakkon, Tommy and Billy are brought home and inadvertently bring Drakkon with them where he is captured by Promethea, a R&D tech company owned by the 1969 Red Ranger Grace Sterling who keeps him locked up at her facility without informing Zordon or the Power Rangers, but Billy discovers Promethea is  secretly holding Lord Drakkon. What will happen now? Find out next in this review of MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #24!

The Ongoing Misadventures of Squatt & Baboo
Written By: Ryan Ferrier
Illustrated By: Bachan

Letters By: Jim Campbell

The issue starts with Rita having Finster tell her all about his monsters. He tells her that he had created fourteen monsters around the world who were sleeper agents of sorts wearing a human disguise and not knowing what they were until activate. He tells her that the Rangers had already defeat four of them. Rita orders him to activate them all and make them grow against his protests. This is a really good look at why Rita is the Empress of Evil, she isn't the comical headache prone Rita we seen on TV.

At PrometheaBilly speaks to Drakkon, who taunts him but only for a moment before the Rangers call him to help with the ten monsters Rita just activated worldwide. The Rangers take on the monsters when Grace arrives in her man-made Zord to help out which doesn't sit right with Jason. The monsters become unstable due to already transforming prior and the Rangers defeat them. I don't know what to think of Grace, she seems to really want to help but I think her obsession with being a Power Ranger for a brief time is going to lead her down a dark path.

Billy tells the Rangers about Promethea holding Lord Drakkon and the investigate it themselves. Drakkon taunts the Rangers, especially Tommy, trying to play on his insecurities. Jason and Grace talk in private where Jason once again confronts Grace telling her he can not trust her due to her constantly keeping things from him. Grace tries to reassure him that she was keeping Drakkon there to help the team and that she is doing whatever she can to lighten the weight of the helmet on the Red Ranger. But Jason is interrupted by the others when Zordon summons them back to the Command Center. I really love this scene. The way that Jason is struggling with his role as a leader and Grace is playing off of it shows that she has her own agenda but it also shows why Jason is and always will be the best Red Ranger because he is a leader through and through.

The Rangers speak to Zordon, Alpha 5 and Saba at the Command Center about Lord Drakkon being at Promethea and they sahre their concerns of Rita finding out about him and they team up the way they did on his world. Zordon tells the Rangers to go home and rest as he, Alpha and Saba discuss what they should do with Lord Drakkon. Before he leaves Zordon tells Jason that he understands why he distrusts Grace some but it is his fault because he failed her and her teamin 1969 and now she is determined not to let another team fail. This was a great traditional Power Rangers scene where we see Zordon advising the Rangers, and Jason especially but doing so cryptically allowing Jason to take his words of wisdom but do with them what he will as he is the leader of the team.

Saba who is from Drakkon's word knows of the world that he created and what he could do if he were to escape or if he were to team up with Rita in this world decides to go to Promethea to take him out. Saba and Drakkon have a brief conversation where Drakkon plays more mind games as he usually does but this time it works. Saba, fearing what Drakkon would do if he is ever escapes or team with Rita decides he and he alone must end Drakkon now before the dark fate that ravaged his world could be inflicted upon others. Saba blasts Drakkon who maneuvers enough where Saba's blast hits a wire that was holding him in space and Drakkon attacks Saba ripping off his head, and use the saber to slice open a portal. This scene was MORPHENOMINAL! I mean come on this is why Lord Drakkon is so feared, he isn't Tommy, he is evil through and through and you can see that in this scene perfectly, and now due to Saba, Lord Drakkon is loose!

WOW this is how you kick off an event! I am so pumped for Shattered Grid! Higgins has been crafting one of the best Power Rangers stories ever, on screen or off. The creation of Lord Drakkon could only get better if they actually include him and Shattered Grid into the 25th Anniversary episode of Power Rangers SuperNinja Steel! The art is great also, while not as detailed as I usually prefer, and the characters look different than their on screen counterparts, I really dig it. I think it add the perfect ambiance for the tone of the story.

The back up story with Squatt and Baboo is fun, and harkens back to the campy fun of the series. While I enjoy that throwback, it does feel out of place in the world that Higgins has created. I hope they pause the story for Shattered Grid.

I give this an over all of 4 1/2 out of 5 Power Bolts!

Marvel Announces BLACK PANTHER #1
Featuring An All-New Creative Team And All-New Direction!

New creative teams. New series. New directions. New beginnings. It all kicks off this May with BLACK PANTHER #1!

“Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be rolling out new beginnings for a few of our key franchises—new creative teams, new starting points, new storylines—all the big stuff that we’ve been building towards since LEGACY began. This isn’t a clearing of the slate—while these new starts will kick off with new #1s, we’ll be maintaining the classic LEGACY issue counts as dual numbering on these titles as well. Oh, and don’t read anything into not seeing a character on the Jim Cheung piece…we can only squeeze so many characters onto there without killing poor Jim!”
— Tom Brevoort, SVP and Executive Editor

Top Panels of the Week - 2/21/18

ComicFrontline is starting a new segment where the crew picks their Top 5 comic panels from the week, and then you guys get to vote below which panel was your favorite. In next week's post I will announce the winner from the poll.

Fan Panel Pick From Last Week - Detective Comics #974 - The Bat Means Don’t Kill!

    Kat

    5. The Mighty Thor  #704 - The Gods Don't Believe In Us.

Odinson let Jane down multiple times, so she became her own God.

    4. The Mighty Thor #704 - I'm Not Religious....

What a heartbreaking opening to unravel Jane's connection to her spirituality throughout the course of the issue.

    3. Injustice 2 #20 - Superboy Is Alive!

I loved that it was Ma and Pa Kent who greet Superboy when he survives.

    2. The Amazing Spider-Man #796 - Face It Tiger!

Great homage! It's was a pleasure seeing Peter and MJ reconnecting.

    1. The Mighty Thor #704 - Find A God Worthy Of You.

The Mighty Thor #704 was a beautiful tribute to Jane Foster's human life. This line from her mother prefaces the whole issue as Jane unknowingly searches for spirituality. In the end, the God worthy enough for Jane was herself.

    BRANT

    5. Incredible Hulk #713 - Cho In The Trunk!

After finally letting Hulk out, Amadeus now pays the price for holding him back so long. I love the implications for the future here. Hulk is unleashed!

    4. Batman #41 - Flash Around Every Corner!

I just love this line as Ivy controls Alfred. It's a dig at the multiple Flashes running around, and features that classic wry humor of Ivy.

3.The Amazing Spider-Man #796 - Prelude to Red Goblin! (AKA Two-Face Marvel Style)

Sure, we've seen this coming, but the portrait of a completely restored Norman Osborn standing there with symbiote and serum is just eerie and cool at the same time! Two of Spidey's greatest threats wrapped up in one... Dan Slott's trying to leave his mark on the book before his exit.

    2. X-Men Gold #22 - Kitty Has It Well In Hand!

Kitty went dark here! Risking limb to save the day with the most dire of consequences for Mesmero. Love it!

    1. Infinity Countdown Prime #1 - A Pocket For Every Stone!

I was torn between this and my runner-up, but ultimately this one is just a better Wolverine line. Just the sheer matter-of-fact nature of "I got more pockets" for all the Infinity Stones was classic Logan and cool as can be!

    JAY

    5. Infinity Countdown - Prime #1 -  SHAZAM?!

COME ON! I love this! We find out that the different Captain Marvels from different universe may have also found the Reality Stone, and one of them is just about off panel here and it just so happens to look like DC's Captain Marvel! I loved this nod to the Distinguished Competition and the history of the trademark!

    4. Astonishing X-Men #8 - Are You Flirting With Me?

I loved this scene! I mean come on! Especially given Raze is supposed to be Wolverine and Mystique's son, maybe it wasn't our Wolverine, but a "Wolverine" Old Man Logan! This scene just cracked me up!

    3. Super Sons #13 - Insult Denied Short Round!

These types of scenes are why I love this series. This girl Georgia Bakshi is Jonathan's crush, and she seems to be crushing on him too. She is a mix of Lana, Lois and Diana! I want this to be the next Trinity!!!! Please make this girl a Bana-Mighdall Amazon PLLLLEASSSSE!!!!

    2. The Amazing Spider-Man #796 - Face It Tiger!

One of the most iconic lines in comic history! I love the hope this issue brings to M.J. and Peter fans. This simple line changed Peter's life forever, and now could it do it again? This issue seems to imply that it might.

    1. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers #24 - OH SNAP!!!!

This is why Lord Drakkon is a huge villain, and the biggest, and dare I say it best villain in Power Rangers history! He manipulates everyone in this issue, and it works on Saba enough to have him lose control and he takes the opening! Bring on Shattered Grid!

    MIKE SPIDER-SLAYER

    5. Avengers #681 - Voyager Is A Wimp!

This proves my point The Voyager is a wimp every issue she cries that she is tired and she needs a break. The biggest Superhero slacker ever!

    4. Injustice 2 #20 - Snap!

Wait did Amazo just Snap Zods head right off?? I didn't even know that was possible.

    3. X-Men Gold #22Kitty Has It Well In Hand!

Kitty is pretty badass through this entire issue. But this scene was great willing to sacrifice her hand is showing you that she is willing to do anything for her team.

    2. Infinity Countdown Prime #1 - Stabbing The Trickster

Wolverine is back, and at the beginning of this issue he thrust is claws into Loki to prove that it is really him! Nice to have you back Logan.

    1. The Amazing Spider-Man #796 - Old Habits, Not Bad Ones!

Really it's the last 3 panels of this issue that put a smile on my face but I could only pick one so I started with this one where it shows that Mary Jane wanted  something more from Peter that night than just a date! Face it tiger you just hit the Jackpot!!! Finally.

Top Panel of the Week - 2/21
