Kickstart the Week with Book of Lyaxia #1

By: Nicole D’Andria

In this latest Kickstarter, see every mythology explored in Book of Lyaxia #1! Plus enjoy an in-depth interview with the creative team of this mythical adventure.

The Book of Lyaxia universe includes every pantheon, from Greek to Egyptian. This particular book focuses on the twin brothers Deimos and Chronos as they explore this chaotic world. They’ll deal with themes of family, love and war, as well as finding your place in the world and discovering your destiny. And in this world, doing good is much more dangerous than doing wrong.

Creator and writer Aron Pohara immigrated to the United States from Crotia in 1997 because of a rift created by the Baltic War and uses comics and movies as an escape, and he enjoys mythology because of the hopefulness it brings him. Hence the love he’s poured into Book of Lyaxias. His artists are Team Diaverik (comprised of Andy Baquerizo and Tsubasa Yozora) along with colorist Jesse Heagy and letterer Francisco Zamora.

The Kickstarter is trying to raise $2,500 byNovember 30, 2018 at 7:59 PM EST. Rewards include digital ($5) and physical ($10) copies of Book of Lyaxia #1 with options for variants ($15) and art prints ($20). View the rest of the reward tiers on the Book of Lyaxia #1 Kickstarter.

I spoke with writer Aron Pohara and colorist Jesse Heagy about their mythical adventures below!

Aron Pohara

Me: How would you describe the world you've created in Lyaxia and the inspiration behind including all of the mythological pantheons in it?

Pohara: What I want to do with the world of Book of Lyaxia is to express the majesty that mythology has in a brand new light. More than that; I wanted to make sure the readers can somewhat see themselves in those situations. Ask questions; what would they do if they were faced with adversity and choices the characters in the book are?

As for inspiration, it comes from the old mythological stories as I really grew up reading everything from Homer’s Iliad to Mahabharata as well as old English folk tales and of course tons of comics and cartoon shows when I was a kid. To me Gods are the original superheroes and I just wanted to give them the gravitas they deserve.

Book of Lyaxia #1 Variant Covers

Me: If you could only be part of one pantheon in this story, who would you join and why?

Pohara: I would probably like to be part of the Anastos family that here is represented by Adonis, Ares, Hypnos and a few others you will meet down the line. Reason for it: they are close enough to the ruling family without having that responsibility of the power and everyone trying to take them down. They have some fantastic vistas as well that you will see later. Plus with someone like Ares on your side wouldn't you want to be part of it?

Me: If you had to pick your favorite story originating out of the pantheons, which story would you pick and why?

Pohara: This is a really tough choice as every story is unique in its own way and really represents different things. But Deimos and Chronos' story, the one the first arc will complete, is certainly one of my favorites because it is both a great standalone arc as well a catalyst for other stories that may follow it.

Book of Lyaxia #1 Original Art

Me: How would you describe the differences between Chronos and Deimos?

Pohara: The most obvious differences between Deimos and Chronos is that Deimos is a lot more measured, keen to see past the differences between families. He believes in giving people chances and one could almost call him naive. Chronos is a lot more callous, a lot more calculating. He's not bad per say but he doesn't like to let things slide as much as his brother does. For the others? You’re going to need to read the story!

Me: How did you go about finding Team Diaverik and Jesse Heagy to work on the art?

Pohara: Finding artist was actually the most interesting and most challenging part of the process. When I started the process, I was mostly going around in artist alleys at conventions, trying to find someone that could represent the characters I had in my head. Thing was, a lot of the artists didn't really want to commit to the book, they only wanted to do covers or pinups, which was fine. But I didn't have an artist. Originally I had Ale Garza to do the character designs for me, but he wasn't available at the time as he was working on other projects. He finished a first design for Deimos and after that his schedule was getting packed.

It was Ale that recommended Andy to me originally; and after going through some of the art and talking to him, I found that he's a perfect match for the book. He finished the characters in the outfits you see there; we made a few changes and the rest is history.

Jesse was Ale's recommendation actually as well as he worked with Ale on couple of books and pinups; and the way I recruited him was that we did a test run of the character coloring on a commission that I got done at a convention. Both Jesse and Andy are fantastic to work with and add their own voice to the book with suggestions and revisions when they find something that could use tweaking. It's a true collaboration and I feel like I truly hit the jackpot with the creative team I have here.

Book of Lyaxia Art Prints

Me: Beyond issue 1, what are your future plans for the comic book?

Pohara: The first arc of the Book of Lyaxia is seven issues; that is coming out. I am not going to leave anyone hanging. Each chapter is a piece of a puzzle that is going to be fully connected by the end of the 7th issue. Issue 3 is currently being drawn and Jesse is well on his way finishing the colors on the 2ndissue. I have every intention of finishing the first arc as I am currently writing a 6th chapter myself, tweaking few things. So the first arc will be finished 100%. There are stories beyond that, and possibly even one-shots that focus on certain characters.

Me: What is the number one reason why people should back your Kickstarter?

Pohara: For anyone that loves mythology, epic stories and wants to support indie comics, this book is for them. For the backers, I can just tell you that the book is done. Stretch goals are done. This is a pre-order campaign. Anything I get from it will go toward printing the book and delivering it to you.

Me: What inspirational words do you have for aspiring comic book writers?

Pohara: The most important thing I can tell anyone wanting to write a comic book, draw something or anything else you are good at is: never stop and more importantly don't try to stray from your original vision too much. You'll have people telling you no; don't be afraid of it. Tell a story you want to tell, for yourself.

Write for an audience of one, because ultimately that's what is genuine. And one additional thing I can say is: don't question YOURSELF too much; don't question every decision you make, every line you draw, or sentence you write. Finish the product. Then re-read it and tweak it if necessary. But don't start re-writing over and over again. Tell a story that comes to you; don't try to process it too much.

Me: Jesse, How did you go about picking what kind of color palette to use for Book of Lyaxia?

Heagy: I wanted to give it a fantasy feel and Aron had given me some direction where he wanted the environment to go in each land.  This basically led to a use of purples and pinks, to a much cooler feel on the "other side".

Me: Of all the pages you colored in the first issue, which was your favorite to do and why?

Heagy: The scene at the table where the princes are being questioned and someone is set ablaze by one of the princes, displaying his crazy powers that have not been seen before. Firstly, it was my favorite because I really like coloring flames and explosion, and secondly, it is the first action scene of EPIC proportions.

Me: If you had to pick your favorite story originating out of the pantheons, which story would you pick and why?

Heagy: I've always enjoyed the story of Zeus, overthrowing his father, Cronus, and imprisoning him with the help of his brothers. Considering Cronus tried to kill Zeus as a child, it is a pretty slick revenge story.

Me: What is the number one reason why people should back this Kickstarter?

Heagy: If you want a well-thought out-story full of fantasy and mythos, and great art, check this one out. Aron has a ton of issues ready to share with everyone and the story is very cool, starting out on the fun side, and will delve into the darkness as well.

Me: What inspirational words do you have for aspiring comic book colorists?

Heagy: Practice, practice, practice. I've always tried to take a little something from other colorists that I admire and liked over the years, and try to compile these techniques to get a unique style of my own. I have done this for 10+ years and I am still learning and evolving. Make sure that you are open to criticism and don't get frustrated.

Me: Thank you all for taking the time to share the mythology with us! Readers, if you’re interested in exploring multiple pantheons, check out the first Book of Lyaxia on Kickstarter.

Welcome Comic Frontline's Top 5 Panels! This is where the Frontline Six unite to pick their Top 5 comic panels from the week, and then you guys get to vote below which panel was your favorite. In next week's post, we will announce the winner from the poll.

Fan Panel Pick From Last Week - Iceman #3 - Uhh, That Doesn't Sound Right!/Iceman and His Amazing Friends

KAT

5. Fantastic Four #3 - Group Hug

Sometimes you just need to step away from a big battle for a group hug.

4. Wonder Woman #58 - How Should I Sleep?

I really enjoyed their dynamic here.

3. Uncanny X-Men #1 - My Claws Are Better Than Forks

I love the humor that has been injected into Laura's character since All-New Wolverine.

2. Mister Miracle #12 - We're So Small, And That’s Okay

Existentialism at its best.

1. The Amazing Spider-Man #9 - The Lookups

This whole MJ story arc feels so fresh and creative! It was great to see other prominent supporting cast members struggling with similar things.

BRANT

BLOOPER:
Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man #312 - Wrong Wrist

Okay, I know I'm nitpicking and picking on the creative team here, but it was just funny to me. He says his right wrist, but clearly his left arm is in a sling here. It happens, I know. It just struck me as funny this time. :)

HONORABLE MENTION: Superman #5 - There it is.

Not quite good enough to make the Top 5, but I did like the way Superman dissected the reasoning of Rogol Zaar here. It was a great illustration of Superman's intellect and discerning skills.

5. The Black Order #1 - Am I Funny?

I love Proxima's reply here, and this just continues to be a thing in this issue. They managed to humanize The Black Order here and it was so good.

4.  Domino #8 - In His Pants

Gotta love Diamondback's creativity here.

3. Fantastic Four #3 - Listen To YOUR Uncle Ben!

As a Spidey fan... I LOVE this. It's hilarious as Spidey tries to give the Uncle Ben speech, and other Uncle Ben steps in. NOICE!

2. Amazing Spider-Man #9 - But Then...

Haha, maybe I'm reading too much into this, but this is the second scene Spidey is hanging onto Black Cat and is, well, enjoying the experience. Sure, he's with MJ, but there's history and he's human. Fun issue.

1. Fantastic Four #3 - They're Back

I love that the FF just took time out of a MAJOR battle to have a group hug and reconnect. This is family, the first family, and I love it!

CHRIS

5. Saban's Go, Go Power Rangers #14 - On The Rebound

Skull on the rebound.....TOMMY HELP!!!!

4. God Of War #1 - Rage Issues

Kratos has no rage control!

3. Superman #5 - Kal-El, Take It

For Krypton!

2.  Fantastic Four #3 - Group Hug

Just this...Family!

1.  Birthright #33 - Brother Rivalry!

My turn!

JAY

5. Voltron: Legendary Defender #5 - You Are The Yellow Paladin....

This is a throwback to a previous issue (and that panel made my top 5 panels that week too) about Hunk being the food guy. This was just awesome LOL. But he is still a foot to Shiro.

4. Rose #14 - You Wouldn't Understand....

I love the turn and redemption of Sir Dante. I also love how it shows while so different these two are so alike. Rose made Sir Dante feel loved, wanted and needed again, he felt noble again.

3. Saban's Go, Go Power Rangers #14 - Momma's Got The Big Sword Now!

LOVE THIS! Trini kicking all kinds of ass here! I also love how it shows Jason struggling with the Power Daggers while Trini excels with the Power Sword, just proves that she was underused on the show.

2. Fantastic Four #3 - Listen To YOUR Uncle Ben!

I love the Ben and Franklin relationship and man throwing in Spider-Man for that comedic moment was pure genius. Dan Slott was born to write these characters!

1. Superman #5 - Get Your Houses In Order!

SO much to take in! The House of El? Is that Lucy or Lois as Superwoman? Is that Alura or Kara in the Kryptonian armor? Is this a glimpse of the future? In this a glimpse of what was? SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!!

MIKE SPIDER-SLAYER

5. Red Hood and The Outlaws #28 - Batwoman V. Red Hood

Never saw this coming Batwoman vs. Red Hood??

4. Venom #8 - Goodbye Flash

Eddie saying a proper goodbye to Flash was very touching and it is nice to know that Flash is not forgotten.

3. The Amazing Spider-Man #9 - SpiderCat

Irresponsible Spider putting the moves on Felicia had me cracking up.

2. Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man #312 - Meet My Demise

Peter thinks he could actually die in this issue. Spidey never loses his humor even in his darkest moments by calling Morlun a Brad Pitt Cosplayer!!

1. Fantastic Four #3 - They're Back

The Four are officially reunited, this scene with there first team huddle was a long time coming.

 THE LOLLIPOP KIDS #2
"Things That Go Bump In The Night"
Co-Created & Story By: Adam Glass & Aiden Glass
Written By: Adam Glass
Art By: Deigo Yapur
Colors By: DC Alonso
Letters By: Sal Cipriano
Cover A By: Robert Hack
Price: $3.99

Nick Motley learns more about the Lollipop Kids, their mission and his role in the legacy. But all he wants to do is find his sister. Adam Glass continues establishing a vast world here with relatable characters in surreal surroundings. Central Park becomes grander than the historic and magnificent park it is, it becomes a mythological character in its own right. The Lollipop Kids feel like real kids thrust into this world, as Nick assumes the role of the reader, the new person witnessing everything for the first time. Yapur really captures both the scale of the real world with the mystique of this world of wonder and dangers walking amongst it. The color palette sets the atmosphere and connects the whole thing in a fantastic second issue that left me wanting the third now.  ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¾ Stars

ARCHIE #700
Written By: Nick Spencer
Art By: Marguerite Sauvage
Colors By: Marguerite Sauvage
Letters By: Jack Morelli
Price: $3.99

A new era of Archie has begun as the comics start to embrace Riverdale’s style of storytelling. There are a lot of plot points that remind me of the Riverdale pilot in particular: Archie having a secret girlfriend, a summer filled with secrets, and Jughead as the outsider narrating the events. I wouldn’t call the comic full on Riverdale because the story isn’t as dark, but I didn’t like that there was drama just for drama’s sake. Mark Waid created a new standard for Archie as he injected just the right amount of drama that challenged our characters’ relationships to the core. Waid’s storytelling felt like a drama, while Spencer’s tone is soapier. Marguerite Sauvage has some great pencils for this book as she brings the same modern flair from the last volume, but her colors were a bit too bright. I am very torn on Archie #700 as I enjoyed some of the characters moments, but conflicted on what it means for the direction of this series.

P.S. Betty and Veronica deserve so much better than Archie. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 3 ½ Stars

SMOOTH CRIMINALS #1
Written By: Kurt Lustgarten & Kristen “Kiwi” Smith
Art By: Leisha Riddel
Colors By: Brittany Peer
Letters By: Ed Dukeshire
Cover By: Audrey Mok, Chynna Clugston Flores
Price: $3.99

Smooth Criminals is a hilarious new series that puts together the unlikely pair of a jewel thief from the ’60s and a geeky loner, hacker to create a dynamic duo that you never knew you needed until now. Kurt Lustgarten & Kristen “Kiwi” Smith does a great job at showcasing the personalities of these two characters with the limited page count of a first issue. I love the character designs Leisha Riddel develops for our main leads. It shows the perfect contrast between these two characters. Brittany Peer brings a nice, bright color palette that delivers the perfect amount of energy to the book. Smooth Criminals #1 is a great character piece with a fun dash of government mystery that will leave readers wanting more. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

LIGHTSTEP #1
Written By: Miloš Slavkovic҆, Mirko Topalski
Art By: Miloš Slavkovic҆
Letters By: Andrej Bunjac
Cover By: Miloš Slavkovic҆, Dave Stewart
Price: $3.99

Lightstep is an interesting take on the post-apocalyptic, dystopian sci-fi future subgenre. You learn that there is a sect of people that believe themselves to be the purest of humanity left in the universe because of their bloodline. A very British Royal type of mentality, but in this case lends itself more to a cult than a monarchy.

In this issue, we learn the history behind the bloodline and are introduced to our main character, January Lee (or Synitah) a young lady who is supposed to go through some ritual that includes a reenactment of the Primogenitor and his siblings, in order for her family to ascend. From the start, though, we realize January is the rebellious type, not sure how much she believes in what she’s been taught her entire life. And that’s when we see it all fall apart.

The premise is solid and intriguing, but the delivery was a bit lacking. Instead of naturally getting to know these characters, we were given a large info dump through her narration. At times, it was a chore to slog through the recap of the history of mankind’s coming to this point in time. At other times, the information was very interesting, learning that each planet was propelled at different speeds so that the main bloodline were living the equivalent of a day compared to lower planet’s entire life cycle for a human being. And I have to commend the writers for Using a dream state to give us this information, but it was still a bit clunky.

The art was very well done, with unique and creative designs both of the characters and the various worlds and devices. The colors gave it a nice futuristic wash with pastels and diminished inks to give it a softer, cleaner look.

Overall, I thought this issue was a solid effort, but fell short in the delivery, sadly downgrading the experience. I’m not sure the issue did the job of engaging the reader enough to hook or to come back for more, but much praise for the concept. ~ Brant @BrantFowler
Verdict: 3 Stars

BATMAN #59
Written By: Tom King
Art By: Mikel Janin
Colors By: Jordie Bellaire
Letters By: Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Mikel Janin
Variant Cover By: Francesco Mattina
Price: $3.99

This issue adds more to Tom King’s longer Batman story. Penguin gives Batman all the information about Bane’s work out of Arkham Asylum. This leads to the Caped Crusader confronting Bane and damaging his alliance with Jim Gordon in the process. Tom King adds great depth to the issue’s three main characters. In terms of dialogue, King adds some extra arrogance to Batman’s voice. This adds to the popular perception of Batman being invincible with a matching ego. Also, this issue contains an interesting Penguin story. As someone who doesn’t think highly of the Penguin, this issue gave the character a great emotional arc. With his wife dead, Penguin rats out Bane to Batman not for justice but for revenge and a death wish. Plus when Batman confronts Bane, Bane does not fight back and acts like he’s psychologically damaged. Despite Batman’s blows, Bane remains committed to his plan. This shows there’s more to Bane than just his size (which is what people outside of comics focus on). Overall, Tom King is playing the long-game on Batman so if you like bigger stories then this is the story to read. ~ Louis @SpiderMan1991
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

INJUSTICE 2 ANNUAL #2
Written By: Tom Taylor
Art By: Bruno Redondo
Colors By: Rex Lokus
Letters By: Wes Abbott
Price: $4.99

The conclusion of Injustice 2 was perfection, from Tom Taylor’s memorable character work to Bruno Redondo’s flawless pencils. This issue truly moved me! Taylor shows why Batman and Superman has one of the most powerful friendships in comics, which makes the events of Injustice that more devastating. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 5 Stars

SIDEWAYS #10
Written By: Dan Didio
Art By: Kenneth Rocafort
Colors By: Daniel Brown
Letters By: Dave Sharpe
Cover By: Kenneth Rocafort
Price: $2.99

After sharing panel time with the likes of Zatanna and Superman, Sideways returns to his not so normal life at home. Derek is still dealing with the ramifications of his mother’s death as his best friend Ernie also has some family drama to tackle. I was happy to see the series back to its status quo. The title is at its best when focusing on Derek and Ernie’s friendship. Although, I wasn't fond to the hint of a romantic connection between the two. I like that they were a boy and a girl who could just be friends. I also thought the callbacks to Superman throughout the issue became repetitive. Kenneth Rocafort returns to the series on artwork, which helps bring the story back to its main focus, but, surprisingly, I did like the guest artist more. Rocafort’s pencils don’t feel completely rendered, bringing a blurry quality to the book. Sideways #10 is an improvement from the last arc but still doesn’t produce the same magic the series once had. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 3 ½ Stars

TEEN TITANS #22
"And They All Fell Down"
Written By: Adam Glass
Art By: Bernard Chang
Colors By: Marcelo  Maiolo
Letters By: Rob Leigh
Cover By: Benard Chang & Wil Quintana
Variant Cover By: Alex Garner
Price: $3.99

The Teen Titans are pinned under a building that Crush struggles to hold and they have to figure a way out before she collapses. Adam Glass genuinely knows how to write teens. He doesn't try making them "sound young" by interjecting a bunch of slang, or any of the other cliches. Instead, Glass captures these young characters and writes them as actual teens who just so happen to be superpowered. This issue like the previous ones also showcases the chemistry between the cast and a little peek into their heads. While this issue is low on action it is high on character building and group dynamics that really pulls you into the story. The art by Chang and Maiolo remain dynamic and vibrant lending to that youthful energy the book needs. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

The first volume of Bettie Page was a surprise hit for me, and I was ecstatic to see Dynamite was publishing a second volume with the pin-up model. As happy I am to see Bettie’s story continue, this would have been a better story arc than start for a new series. It’s not very new reader friendly, and for old fans, there wasn’t a big WOW moment to warrant a whole new series for the character. Julius Ohta on pencils is a great fit for the title. Bettie from dialogue to pencils is really expressive, and her wit is what makes this a must buy series for me. ~ Kat @ComicUno

GO-BOTS #1
Story, Art & Cover By: Tom Scioli
Price: $3.99

I’m a child of the ‘80s. I grew up on Transformers, G.I. Joe, He-Man, M.A.S.K., and yes, Go-Bots, just, as I’m sure, Tom Scioli did. So I have a history with these characters and their world, just like Scioli.

When I look back on these properties, though, I see great memories, great characters, great stories… but I also understand the limitations technology and the general culture succumbed to. And so when I see these beloved characters and their rich worlds thrust into the 21st Century, given polish and shine, and, when handled correctly, added depth, it makes me happy. I don’t expect them to be exactly as they were back then. Why limit them even further? Why hamper that creativity and what we are able to do today?

Sadly, I feel like Scioli does just that. His idea of honoring these properties is to keep them as they were. Present them in the same way that we were accustomed to in the ‘80s. And let’s face it, Go-Bots was a cheap knock-off of Transformers, with inferior characters, stories, animation, and action figure designs, at least in my humble opinion.

While I do sincerely appreciate what Scioli was trying to do here with Go-Bots, making them a little edgier, but with a classic feel, I think it fell short on many levels. Story-wise, the plot was thin at best, and the characters were very one dimensional. And considering we’re dealing with giant transforming robots, that’s an issue.

The art was very rough, amateurish in parts, the coloring muddy and garish at times, and figures contorted in ways, not at all possible. The lettering was classic to be sure, but the words had so much breathing room I wondered if it was to cover up the lack of background detail in the panels.

I understand some prefer Golden Age comics to today’s visuals and style of storytelling. I’m not one of them. I prefer my comics with beautiful art, great storytelling, rich and deep characters, and a level of overall quality I just feel is not present here.

This was a missed opportunity to take a belittled franchise and do something special with it for a new generation. Instead, we got fan service to those that prefer the classics. This is the most disappointed in a comic I’ve been in quite some time. ~ Brant @BrantFowler

The Devil attacks Imani in the hospital while the Scarab meets and discovers a connection with P:Andora. The action continues hurling you through walls in this issue, and I love it. This book delivers excitement non-stop, action and plot twist that never allows you to feel safe. You feel like you remain a part of the story and leave you waiting in anticipation for the following issue. The art here remains timeless and captures your attention with the bold color palette that enhances the lines and inks. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

MIDDLEWEST #1
Written By: Skottie Young
Art By: Jorge Corona
Colors By: Jean-Francois Beaulieu
Letters By: Nate Piekos of Blambot
Cover By: Mike Huddleston
Variant Covers By: Jorge Corona, Skottie Young
Price: $3.99

Skottie Young is proving that his storytelling has many layers with his recent offerings, but also common themes. As he stated in the back of the issue, he’s a fan of “kid on a journey” type stories, and that is evident with Middlewest, as well as Bully Wars and I Hate Fairyland. So each of them shares that common thread.

Another thread they share is some personal trauma for these kids close to home. With Gert from I Hate Fairyland, she got her wish that turned into her nightmare. With Bully Wars, it focuses on a kid being bullied and helping his bully beat some other bullies. And in Middlewest, it deals with a boy and his father.

This is where Middlewest stands out as the parallels between the fantasy and reality of the series are telling a greater story: One of neglect, abuse, and self-discovery.

Abel is a boy whose mother left him and his father, and his father blames him for it. He only finds fault with Abel and deals out harsh punishments for it. We see the range from yelling to the silent treatment, to psychological abuse and physical abuse.

It’s interesting how the story opens on a wind monster, and then we see that transformation later on. It makes one wonder if this is fantasy or a child’s mind trying to make sense of the world around him. It’s a very interesting way to address these issues, masked in an offbeat fantasy tale that sees a boy train hopping across the Middlewest, meeting extraordinary if unassuming individuals.

And let me just add that Jorge Corona’s art is equally fantastic in this series. His style is fluid and loose giving a realistic feel to the environment and a stylized excitement to the figures. His characters all look completely different with different body types, facial shapes, and hairstyles, personalities, and mannerisms, even the fox. There is movement in his style that is befitting of the windy Middlewest that becomes a character in and of itself in the book.

If the book itself wasn’t enough, the back matter is chock full of sketches and designs, information and a great write-up by Young.

This is one of the most promising indie titles I’ve seen in a while that appeals to one’s love of fantasy, adventure, and enjoyment of coming of age stories that deal with real issues in a fun way. ~ Brant @BrantFowler

ASTONISHING X-MEN #17
Written By: Matthew Rosenberg
Art By: Greg Land
Colors By: Frank D’Armato
Letters By: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Greg Land, Jay Letson, and Frank D’Armato
Price: $3.99

With this issue, Astonishing X-Men comes to an end but Havok’s team goes out with a bang. Matthew Rosenberg does an impressive job writing this team of mutants. Rosenberg’s dialogue gives each character their own unique voice which is an essential part for team books. The issue gives Havok a great conclusion to his character arc. In the final scene, Havok decides to turn himself over to O.N.E. so his team will be left alone. There’s a great monologue for Alex Summers when he accepts his role of a scapegoat rather than the hero. Ever the optimist, Alex figures his actions can help the other X-Men be real heroes. Plus we get a great explanation about why Havok’s been making more jokes and it’s an interesting revelation about his feelings regarding his older brother, Scott (a.k.a. Cyclops). Another awesome star in this issue was Dazzler. Rosenberg writes her as an intelligent and underestimated hero. Plus there’s a great scene where Dazzler takes out all of the Reaver Sentinels after charging her powers (terrific art by Greg Land and Frank D’Armato). Even though this team was short-lived, it’s an entertaining and memorable X-Men story (especially for Havok and Dazzler fans). ~ Louis @SpiderMan1991

MARVEL KNIGHTS 20th #2
Story By: Matthew Rosenberg & Donny Cates
Script By: Matthew Rosenberg
Art By: Niko Henrichon
Letters By: VC’s Cory Petit
Cover By: Geoff Shaw & Rain Beredo
Variant Covers By: Jae Lee & June Chung; Kaare Andrews; Dave Johnson
Price: $3.99

The last issue surprised me, and this issue continued to engage me. When I went into the series, I didn’t know what to expect, yet my expectations were low for whatever reason. Thankfully, that first issue hooked me enough to want to come back for more, and I’m glad I did.

This issue picks up with Frank Castle’s mission to find the people on Banner’s list. Next up, Elektra. But first, we learned a bit more about Castle's waking up moment and first interaction with Banner.

I really enjoyed the fact that this wasn’t just a Daredevil book with other Marvel Knights characters in it. Daredevil took a backseat this issue to focus on the other characters, and that, in my mind, paid respect to the entire line and not just its most popular character.

It was clear that Elektra, while not awake, knew something was off, but Castle was at a disadvantage, and I liked that. He’s not fully awake either, which just continues to build this wonderful mystery as to what happened to these characters and who is behind not only them forgetting, but the world forgetting them!

And then there was the cliffhanger!

My only complaint would be the consistency in art. I understand different characters might warrant different styles, and maybe that will bleed into future releases. But for me, I was taken out of it just a bit because the art was different enough to make me take notice.

I was never a huge Marvel Knights reader, but this series, so far, has made me want to be, and that’s really all you can ask. These are characters we know very well, handled in a familiar, but unique manner here. They all seem to be connected as well, which is key to a good mystery.

Personally, I can’t wait to read the next issue and follow along as this story unfolds. ~ Brant @BrantFowler

SPIDER-FORCE #1
"The Uncanny Spider-Force: Scream"

The Spider-Force meets the Astro-Spider a native of the world and one of its few survivors. The team has no real time to settle when Astro-Spider receives an alert that Verna has attacked the station. Priest does a tremendous job of informing us about all these new characters in short psychic flashbacks. These scenes really give the reader something to chew on while leaving them wanting more. All the emotional beats for Spider-Kid and Barton really hit the right chords. The art here blends into a pleasant look that easily transitions from one artist to the next with such subtly you can hardly notice it.. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

Cletus Kasady is resurrected and paired with the DNA Codex of Knull, the Symbiote God. This book was just a bunch of here is Cletus Casady. We are force fed an origin, and a recap of everything that has happened to him in the guise of a new story which takes up half of the book and Marvel has the audacity to charge $4.99 for this. The story itself is forced to justify the Symbiote God story I could not stand in Cate's Venom title, and this should have been an issue of his series instead of a book with this hefty price. The art here was the highlight for me, it told the story of Carnage in a bold style that delivered the right level of creepy that should come with Kasady. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

“Z” Marks the Spot as Zorro Celebrates 100 years of Adventure!

While other icons and comic book characters have reached milestones marking their 40th, 50th, even 75th anniversary, there’s only one who can claim a century of swashbuckling sensation. The man in black, the “fox,” sword-master supreme and hero to millions of fans the world over, the masked adventurer Zorro turns 100 in 2019. But don’t worry, the soon-to-be centenarian has plenty of tales left to be told, and American Mythology Comics will be leading the charge with a new series of stories to help celebrate the ground-breaking event.

In the history of masked heroes, Zorro has long been recognized as one of the pioneers of the dual identity genre, if not the spark itself which led to many of the hero’s more contemporary caped counterparts. Don Diego de la Vega has been battling whatever form of evil has dared cross his path for the last 100 years, using only his wit, his sword, and his sense of righteousness. The character is the embodiment of standing up for what is right and the protection of those who need it.

But with a character carrying as vast of a history as Zorro, between novels, comics, movies, television, and more, how do you find a fresh take to appeal to fans both new and old? You pull out all the stops and bring your own legendary creators on board. That’s exactly what American Mythology did with comic veteran artist Michael Kaluta, who’ll be providing cover illustrations for their upcoming Zorro: Sacrilege storyline. Fans of the iconic artist can expect the same amazing artwork he’s best known for with his new contributions to the series.

American Mythology released Zorro: Swords of Hell earlier this year, which was well-received by fans of the masked hero. The series, written by pulp fiction pro David Avallone, was the first story to place Zorro in the path of the supernatural by way of a team of demonic horsemen, looking to exact their own brand of vengeance. It was the perfect kick-off for the publisher, leading into the year-long grand celebration of the character’s centennial. While Swords of Hell whet our appetites for more Zorro adventures into the unknown, Zorro: Sacrilege will showcase the hero battling an even darker evil trapped in a religious mission far from his home.

Zorro: Sacrilege will be written by horror comic veteran and American Mythology editor-in-chief, Mike Wolfer.
“One of our goals with the new stories is to introduce Zorro to an all-new readership. But to move ahead, we first have to look at the past. Now, Zorro was one of the earliest American literary heroes, created during the time when westerns were enjoying immense popularity, but with each passing decade, we’re farther and farther away from the age when Western themes, and the mystique of the ‘wild west,’ were still within the living memory of many readers. A century later, modern readers are a bit reluctant to embrace Western themes, so basically, we’re appealing to more modern tastes by skewing our tales toward horror, and the fun aside is that we’re introducing the ‘Old West,’ its settings and themes, to readers who have never seen it. And that gives our Zorro stories a bold and fresh take, while also being nostalgic.”
     - Mike Wolfer

Interior illustrations for the new series will be handled by artist Mauricio Melo, who’s best known for his work on Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG-1 comics. Covers will be drawn by former series interior artist, Roy Allan Martinez, current interior artist Melo, and Kaluta, who will be handling the issue’s main cover.
“This one is going to be horrifying. Something darker and more ancient than Christianity (is) preying upon the people of San Leticia. If you’re a fan of Dario Argento’s films, the movie ‘*REC’ (or ‘Quarantine’), or were totally creeped-out by John Carpenter’s ‘Prince of Darkness,’ then you’re going to love Sacrilege."
     - Mike Wolfer

Zorro, “The Fox,” was created in 1919 by the writer Johnston McCulley for his serialized novel The Curse of Capistrano. This story was the first of 65 immensely popular prose tales in which the romantic hero fought injustice in Spanish California’s Pueblo de Los Angeles. In the century since, Zorro has been an omnipresent figure in pop culture, the star of novels, comic books, cartoons, television, and feature films.
“For decades we have utilized a fresh, innovative approach with top talent to enhance the Zorro’s universe of characters, the Zorro brand & franchise. Our relationship with American Mythology is yet another example of our commitment to our fans and Zorro!”
     - John Gertz, President of Zorro Productions

Zorro: Sacrilege #1 will be advance solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ Nov 2018 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in February of 2019. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies with their local comic book retailers.

Welcome Comic Frontline's Top 5 Panels! This is where the Frontline Six unite to pick their Top 5 comic panels from the week, and then you guys get to vote below which panel was your favorite. In next week's post, we will announce the winner from the poll.

Fan Panel Pick From Last Week - The Black Order #1 - Am I Funny?

    KAT

Honorable Mention - West Coast Avengers #4 - I Want To Stay A Badass Dragon

I love how much character this book has, now the team has a badass dragon on their side!

    5. Smooth Criminals #1 - Are We Friends?

Brenda thinks she made a friend just because they exchanged a few words on a cable car. This allowed me to become instantly attached to the character.

    4. Injustice 2 Annual #2 - It Would Be A Finer World With Her In It

What a great moment to end this run!

    3. Astonishing X-Men #17 - Don’t Underestimate Dazzler

Dazzler is a badass, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

    2. Injustice 2 Annual #2 - You’ve Got A Dad

Bruce, you have a Dad, and his name is Alfred!

    1. Injustice 2 Annual #2 - You’re His Hero

Tom Taylor does such a great job at dissecting Batman and Superman’s relationship, and this snippet is one of my favorites.

    BRANT

    5. Batman #59 - POW

Batman cracking Gordon across the jaw?! This is a trope, the hero seeming obsessed and paranoid, and no one else can see the truth. But it played out perfectly here.

    4.  Teen Titans #24 - Fed Up!

Crush shines here as she tells all her teammates off and gets them back on task.

    3. Teen Titans #24 - Genie Out of a Bottle!

Man, Djinn showed what she's really made of here, very awesome and terrifying!

    2. West Coast Avengers #4 - Will They, Won't They

I had to put that last panel with the earlier two because it makes a perfect sequence. It makes no sense, but I love this budding relationship!

    1. Spider-Geddon #4 - Uncasting the Die!

I LOVE this panel so much. Miles echoes the fans in urging Doc Ock to retire his catchphrase: THE DIE IS CAST! Noice.

    JAY

Honorable Mention - Spider- Force #2 - Not Our Uncle Ben!

It is so hard to see a different Uncle Ben but this issue and this panel, in particular, made me want to see more of him.

    5. Teen Titans #24 - Chunky Smurf!

I love the Smurf reference, I also love Roundhouse's confidence. He has no game with the ladies but it doesn't stop him, and their rejection doesn't phase him.

    4. Spider- Force #2 - You Caught The Safe....

Spider-Kid caught the safe and that told Ashley that he had a piece of Peter Parker in him even if he didn't have the same Uncle Ben. I also love how this makes Peter almost Superman-like, he is the moral compass they should all aspire to be like.

    3. Injustice 2 Annual #2 - You Do Not Stand In My Way

NO ONE stands between a mother and her child, not even Batman. The best part is she doesn't even look back, she just keeps going.

    2. Injustice 2 Annual #2 - MA!

LOL, it is great to know that even Superman can be embarrassed by his Ma! I love this scene!

    1. Injustice 2 Annual #2 - It Would Be A Finer World With Her In It

I loved how this last scene wrapped up this whole journey through Injustice Gods Amongst Us #1 until this annual for Injustice 2. It was all about Lois and I hope Tom Taylor gets to write these characters again because he gets them like no other.

Kickstart the Week(end) with THE GOOD FIGHT: A Peaceful Stand Against Bigotry and Racism

    By: Nicole D’Andria

An important anthology collecting more than 40 stories, THE GOOD FIGHT has an all-star roster of comics creators taking a stand against hatred, bigotry and racism. Be a part of this peaceful stand that includes the likes of Mark Waid (Daredevil, Captain America), JH Williams III (Promethea, Batwoman) and Greg Pak (Planet Hulk, John Wick). I interviewed the founding editor and a couple of the creators in this latest “Kickstart the Week” feature.

THE GOOD FIGHT collects over 200 pages of original material that cover a ton of genres. Since the Kickstarter doesn’t allow funds raised to be donated to charity, all the post-campaign money from sales of THE GOOD FIGHT will be donated to The Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization "dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality."

The Kickstarter is on its way to reaching double its initial $15,000 goal. You can still be a part of it until the campaign ends on December 12, 2018 at 11:57 AM EST. Rewards include digital ($10) and physical ($25 + shipping) copies, plus options for an additional digital bundle of over 700 pages of comics ($40) or a signed NYCC TGF preview ashcan ($40). You can see the rest of the rewards and a complete list of the creators contributing their talents to the anthology on their official Kickstarter page.

I spoke with founding editor Adam Ferris and two of the creators featured in The Good Fight, Chris Antzoulis and Ian Mondrick (Tomb of the White Horse, Curio: The Anti-Thematic Anthology), below!

    Adam Ferris

Me: What is your specific role in the project and how did you initially become involved?

    -Adam Ferris: Founding Editor
    -Danny Lore: Story Editor
    -Michael Perlman: Project Manager
    -Eric Palicki: Kickstarter Campaign Manager

Ferris: We all became involved through networking within the comic book industry for years. We either knew each other or were introduced by a peer. It’s remarkable how we so easily came together and how well we filled the needs of a good editorial team. Maybe we are the real Fantastic Four?

Me: The Kickstarter mentions that this anthology is in reaction to the events in Charlottesville, Virginia. Why did this particular event strike a chord with you and evolve into this anthology?

Ferris: That was a moment when everyone knew the ugly was out in the open. That was the moment when we knew if we didn’t take a stand against it in protest that it would be allowed to grow from there. I’ve always thought it was important to “do what you know”. I know how to make comics, so I took to comics to make my protest against hate. I knew it had to be an anthology, so instead of just me, it was ALL OF US saying NO!

"Boys Night Out" from The Good Fight by Adam Ferris and Mark Rahner

Me: There is a digital reward bundle including over 700 pages of digital comics. What can you tell us about some of the books included in this bundle and why will people who would enjoy THE GOOD FIGHT in particular like them?

Ferris: We think backers of THE GOOD FIGHT will enjoy the Digital Deluxe Reward as it has works from TGF contributors. All of these titles have been very well received on their own and really is a great thing to get ahold of!

Orphans (Palicki, Jovanovic) - full series
Red Angel Dragnet (Palicki, Wieszczyk) - full OGN
All We Ever Wanted - three stories
GWAR: Orgasmaggedon (Miner, Sawyer) - full series
M3 - (Schultz, Alcazar) - first three issues
Twelve Devils Dancing #1 (Schultz, Acosta) - First issue
    Destiny, NY #1 (Shand)

    Plus more TBD.

"Heroes Never Sleep" from The Good Fight by Jeremy Whitley & Dylan Caleho

Me: You mention post-campaign funds will go to The Southern Poverty Law Center. Why did you pick this organization in particular and what are some additional ways people can help out, in addition to buying THE GOOD FIGHT?

Ferris: The SPLC is just one of many great organizations to get behind. But what was really appealing to us was the fact that they help people on a personal level. Victims of hate crimes get assistance from them, especially when it comes to seeking justice in the courts. Which is often an area where marginalized people fight an uphill battle. They also do plenty of education to the young, which is exactly our plan but through comics!

I think if you want to do your part in fighting hate, there are endless ways. One way is to donate money directly to an organization you feel strongly about. Another way would be to organize people to help you. Or you can make your own comic (or project); we really can’t have enough people standing up for what’s right.

"Rise Against the Terror" from The Good Fight by JH Williams III and Ryan Burton

Me: What is the number one reason why you think people should back this project?

Ferris: This will make you feel better, because when you back it, action happens. This will help us help the SPLC. This book will give hope to you or someone you know through its stories of resistance. We’ve so carefully crafted these stories that teachers have been backing the project to show their students!

Me: What inspirational words do you have for people aspiring to make comic book anthologies with important messages, such as fighting racism and bigotry?

Ferris: If you have a strong feeling to do a benefit anthology, you are already equipped with everything you need. Form your mission statement (a clear direction of what you stand for and what your book intends to accomplish) and ask others for help. You’ll be surprised by the amount of people that are willing to help you make a change! It will take time; it took me over a year to gather scripts and creators. But if you don’t let up, it will come together and be very much worth it.

    Chris Antzoulis
    Ian Mondrick

Me: What is your story about and why did you choose to go in that particular direction?

Chris Antzoulis, writer of "The Feed": Actually, my story that will be appearing in the anthology, "The Feed," was not the first story I sent in to Adam Ferris and the editors of THE GOOD FIGHT. Adam enjoyed my first script, but it didn't make the overall fit for the book. So, he asked me if I could write another. After I said "CHRIS ANTZOULIS WRITES TWO STORIES FOR NO MAN," he told me that one aspect yet to be covered in the book was a story dealing with the problem of online bullying and trolls on the internet. I too felt that this should be covered in an anthology about peacefully combatting bigotry and racism. I've had a number of friends and acquaintances, in the comic book industry especially, who have been on the receiving end of this type of bullying. I honestly had a difficult time figuring out how to best approach the issue.

Every time I moved forward with the story in a literal way, I felt like it didn't capture the full scope of the problem and ended up being too “on-the-nose.” Fortunately, my friend Heather Antos is a bomb-ass editor, and someone I trust to tell me “You’re doing it wrong.”  She offered me guidance on the topic and advised me to tell the story how I tell them best... through science fiction and fantasy. All that being said, my story is about wanting to see your own reflection in the world, how meaningful it is to be represented, and how the constant bombardment of bigotry takes its toll.

"The Feed" from The Good Fight by Chris Antzoulis and Lydia Roberts

Ian Mondrick, writer of "Statues of Limitation":"Statues of Limitation" reveals an argument between four confederate statues, placed in a Baltimore warehouse shortly after their removal. Justice Roger B. Taney and Stonewall Jackson debate Robert E. Lee on what has become of the ‘true’ south. As their arguments fade away in the distance we hear the notes of Billie Holiday, singing for Thurgood Marshall and Frederick Douglas, all three now enjoying the quiet city night. I felt the best way to speak about society's journey away from racism was to mix historical artifacts and arguments with positive examples of our march forward. So, the juxtaposition of a Stonewall Jackson statue being removed while the first African American Supreme Court Justice stands tall over the city seemed fitting.

"Statues of Limitation" from The Good Fight by Ian Mondrick and Skylar Patridge

Me: What is the number one reason why you think people should back this project?

Chris Antzoulis: Because it's a meaningful thing you can do with your money! Just hold off on ordering one pizza, or four pumpkin spice lattes. Steal your friend's Netflix account instead of paying for your own. Too many people nowadays are all talk and no action. It's not enough to simply believe in good things, you also have to rise to the challenge of upholding those beliefs as well. This is just one way to do that... and hey, you get to read a book while you're at it.

Ian Mondrick: First, I think backing this book is a great way to give money to a GREAT cause (the SPLC has been fighting bigotry in a REAL way, and needs help!) while getting something you can enjoy for yourself. But more than that, I think this book will help people see racism and bigotry from different angles: the stories in this book aren't just "Racism Bad," they're knowledgeable, historical, and sometimes anecdotal accounts on how racism & bigotry influence us all.

Cannonball from The Good Fight by Jarret Keene and Leonardo Finocchi

Me: Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, and for your peaceful stand against bigotry and racism! If you’re reading this, please consider checking out The Good Fight Kickstarter.

Kickstart the Week(end) with Red Xmas 1-3: A horror/comedy Christmas comic for adults

    By: Nicole D’Andria

Santa Claus is coming to town… and all the children better hide because he’s out for blood! In the third Kickstarter for Red Xmas, readers get to enjoy three issues of the mature horror/comedy series this holiday season! I spoke with the writer and artist about how this comic book brings joy to the world!

After Mrs. Claus dies in a toy accident, Santa plans on making the children pay and starts by attacking the town of Christmas, Vermont! While FBI agent Ellie Tewskberry tries (and fails) to take him down, her son Byron runs away to the North Pole in search of his father, who abandoned the family to become an elf.

The writing team of Red Xmas consists of Clay Adams, who’s previously published comics on Kickstarter with his FRIED Comics, and co-writer Alexandre O. Philippe, who recently directed 78/52, a documentary about the Psycho shower scene. The art team includes line artist Fabio Ramacci (Modern Dead) and colorist Emilio Pilliu (ZZZComics contributor). Red Xmas #3also has a six page back-up feature starring waitress/awful person Frieda in "Crisis on Infinite Friedas,” which is drawn and colored by Ryan Kroboth (Sunmaker).

The Kickstarter’s goal is to raise $4,500 by December 7, 2018 on 11:59 PM EST. Rewards include digital ($5) and physical ($20) copies of the 40 page long third issue, subtitled “Silent, But Deadly, Night”. Digital copies of the previous issues, subtitled “O Holy Crap!” and coming in at a total of 64 pages, are also available digitally ($15) or backers can get physical reprints ($30). The creator also includes copies of his other works as rewards, including digital ($15) copies of PBOW: Pregnant Pitches of War. There are plenty of other rewards to, which you can check out on their Kickstarter page.

I interviewed writer Clay Adams and artist Fabio Ramacci below.

    Me:
What inspired you to combine Santa Claus with a horror/comedy comic book series?

Adams: Red Xmas started as a screenplay pitch (co-writer) Alexandre O. Philippe and I made back in the early 2000s. Our alma mater, NYU, used to send out a big book of pitches to agents, managers, and production companies, so we said, “Hey, let’s come up with something.”

We started out riffing on Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy Krueger is such a brilliant character, so we thought, “Who else might terrorize you in your sleep?” The answer: Santa Claus.

(Incidentally, we pitched the idea and figured we’d write the script if anyone asked for it. Turns out, a LOT of people were interested, and we had to bang out the script in three days. I… don’t recommend this.)

Me: How would you describe the typical work day for one of Santa’s elves in Red Xmas?

Adams: They’re currently cowering in fear somewhere in the bowels of the workshop, hoping to avoid a repeat of The Great Elf Holocaust of 1962.

Oh, for the simple days when they only had to feed the reindeer at dawn and make toys for every kid on earth…

Me: What can you tell us about the other main characters in this series, the Santa-skeptic FBI agent, her wannabe-elf ex-husband, and their son, Byron?

Adams: When our story starts, the family is reeling from Witherspoon Tewksberry’s decision to run off to the North Pole to be an elf.

Momma-bear Ellie is a realist to the Nth degree—she emphatically does NOT believe in Santa Claus. She thinks the world is a terrible, evil place and if you let your guard down for one second, you’ll die a horrible death. That’s why she became an FBI agent in the first place: she’s protecting the world from itself. It’s a pretty stifling environment to grow up in, and her husband leaving hasn’t made things better.

Their son Byron, though, knows Santa is real. He’s tired of hearing how bad the world is, and he wants to believe in some happy magic. He thinks Santa knows where his dad is, so Byron runs away to the North Pole to find his pop.

    Me:
If you had to take on Santa Claus and his horde of elves, what would your plan of attack be?

Adams: First, I’d lure him with milk and cookies.

    Then, I’d—

Come a little closer. This is a secret.

(Whispers) I’d use the secret weapon that was developed many years ago to bring Santa down, should it ever come to that.

And I’d use it with extreme prejudice.

(The rest of you will find out what it is next issue.)

    Me:
Can you tell us more about Frieda in your back-up feature and how this fits into the Red Xmas universe?

Adams: Our imprint, FRIED Comics, is set up like a fictional diner where you come in and read your comics over a nice cup of coffee.

Frieda is our Elvira-like waitress, only with less teeth and more meth.

We wrote the FRIED Diner and Frieda into our first two issues, and the readers demanded she get her own story. We crowd-sourced a title, then did a backup feature in last year’s Red Xmas: O Holy Crap! “Frieda: Hardboiled and Over Easy” was a hit, so we’re bringing her back for a second tour of duty.

    Me:
Why did you decide to make this a two week long Kickstarter campaign rather than the typical month-long campaign?

Adams: This is our fifth campaign, so we were looking for a new challenge. We didn’t want to necessarily raise more money, so we cut the funding period in half instead.

“12 Days of Red Xmas” sort of wrote itself.

    Me:
What is the number one reason why people should pledge money to your Kickstarter?

Adams: If you like Roald Dahl or Rick & Morty, laugh at funerals or dig comics like Preacher, you’ll love this book. And because it’s Kickstarter, we try to craft a fun experience for our backers—it’s a party, and you’re invited.

Oh, and the art by Fabio Ramacci and Emilio Pilliu is beautiful!

(That was three reasons. Sorry, I’m a writer, not a mathematician.)

Me: What inspirational words do you have for aspiring comic book writers?

Adams: Make something! You’ll never get better if your dreams stay just that. Put it on paper, hire an artist, and get the book in front of an audience who will tell you if it stinks or not. Like Nike says: Just Do It.

Me: How did you meet Clay and become part of this project?

Ramacci It was kinda being in the right moment in the right place. After having worked for Italian publishers I was looking for a way to break into the American comics industry and I was spending most of my time looking online for such opportunities. Clay and Alexandre posted a "looking for artist" request in a dedicated subreddit and I proposed myself since the project was as crazy as I wanted it to be! And here we are, still having a lot of fun together!!

Me: In the last three issues of Red Xmas, what was your favorite page to draw and why?

Ramacci: I admit, I'm having fun with most of the pages of Red Xmas cause they're all kinda quirky in their own way; the story is just THAT crazy!! Moreover I have a lot creative freedom and that makes everything funnier and more challenging too. But if I have to choose I'd probably pick page four of the second issue where RICK the animated rickshaw just goes BOOM out of the blue sky with his teleporting abilities. It is just so crazy I couldn't stop jiggling while drawing!

Me: What was the process of creating the character designs like while working on Red Xmas, and which character is your favorite to draw? Why are they your favorite?

Ramacci: I haven't created too many characters since most of the designs are by the previous artist of the series, Domo Stanton. So I'm going with the original designs, just making them my own a little! :)

The few I created starting from issue 2 and on were kinda easy since Clay gave me good references and asked me to reinterpret them in a cartoonish way. Thinking about the best character I like to draw I have two: Rick the rickshaw—cause I have started drawing back in time copying old Disney stuff and I love the cartoonish vibe he gives—and Ellie—cause black leather jackets are just so badass!!

    Me:
If you had to take on Santa Claus and his horde of elves, what would your plan of attack be?

Ramacci: He's an immortal demigod but he's not an all-seeing creature, so I guess the best tactic would be trying something like sneak attacks. I'd love to hire a squad of ancient ninjas and use ambush tactics!!

Me: Since you’ll be doing limited edition commissions for this Kickstarter, what has been your favorite commission that you ever did and why was it your favorite?

Ramacci: Among the commissions I've done in the past, probably the one I loved most was the one with VENOM (from Marvel comics) cause I love that character sooo much! I was so happy when they asked me that! I only thought: "FINALLY!!"

    Me:
You’ve previously published work with Star Comics and Sergio Bonelli Editore in Rome, Italy. Can you tell us a bit about the comic book scene in Italy and some unique qualities it has versus publishing in the United States and other countries?

Ramacci: The Italian comic scene is pretty different from the American one. Both scenes are pretty active and big in terms of number. Some years ago Tex from Bonelli in Italy was selling more comics than Spider-Man in all of the USA, just to give you an idea of how big a market it is. Comics are usually in black and white, with a smaller page size but with 90-100 pages average. There are no superheroes, or just a few, and we go with classic western, horror, sci-fi and detective stories. Also, there is huge market here for intimistic graphic novels! In Italy I've had the opportunity to work on many genres like detective, horror, historic and even romance stories xD!! Red Xmas is something even different from all of that stuff!!

The only thing I don't like about the Italian comic scene is that it is a little bit self-referencing and a lot of very good artists and writers are just not interested in working for abroad companies because they're fine the way they are. And that's a pity—for the world outside to not be able to read such good comics!

    Me:
What is the number one reason why people should pledge money to your Kickstarter?

Ramacci: Of course because it's a F*****G AWESOME comic book! I mean: we tell a story of a crazy Santa who wants to kill children while all sorts of crazy beings and personifications of the other festivities try to stop him. And let's not talk about flying rickshaws and Easter eggs used as flying vehicles! Every line is a pun, yet it is all very readable! Is that enough to convince you guys?

Me: What inspirational words do you have for aspiring comic book artists?

Ramacci: The only real advice I can give aspiring artists is to DRAW, DRAW and DRAW more while being STUBBORN as hell. It's the only way you can do this work. You gotta be (or become) a good artist and love comics! That is not achievable with a half-assed resolution, trust me! So: believe in yourselves and DRAW.

    ...

Did I say draw? Well, go do it now!

Thank you for this interesting interview!!

Me: Thank you BOTH for taking the time to talk with me about the demigod that we all know and love, Santa Claus. Happy holidays! If you’re reading this and interested in getting into the violent side of the Christmas spirit, check out the Kickstarter for Red Xmas here.

The day is here, Nicolas and Eugene will find out their fate. The Fencing team then bonds over an age-old tradition. This series ends this phase of its exitence but leaves us with a cliffhanger that will have us waiting in anticipation for the next phase. I can not praise the team and BOOM! enough for this book, they have really created something awesome. Fence is filled with characters that blur the lines between the supremely real and the startlingly surreal. The way Pacat and Johana work together blending the written and visual mediums to give us this much depth in such a short time in beyond anything I have ever seen before. This chapter ends with us knowing more about the school and about our cast, which I can not wait to continue learning about when the story continues on as a series of original graphic novels. Unitatis Mirabile Vinculum.... ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

The origins of BOOM’s new Power Ranger is revealed in an exposition-filled new installment. It’s been hard for me to connect to this team, and adding a new ranger this quickly doesn’t help the situation. I need to see more chemistry building between the rangers. Simone Di Meo’s pencils have improved over these past couple issues, and the inking assistance has helped in that regard. The colors bring an interesting tone for the series but is also a contributor to the book’s denseness. I hope Mighty Morphin Power Rangers takes a break from its bigger picture to start developing the team. If we don't care about the team, how can we care about the plot? ~ Kat @ComicUno

After Clark finds out some disturbing news about the city officials, Superman is attacked by the Red Cloud. The Invisible Mafia is an interesting concept with a bigger conspiracy behind it that has me intrigued. While I have been enjoying Bendis's run so far, but he has been playing too loose with the Clark Kent persona. Now, this could have been the artist doing it on his own or a direction in Bendis script, but Clark took off his glasses in front of the new girl at the Daily Planet. This is a small thing but big for Superman, he is more careful than that. But what is great here is that the mystery continues to go deeper with other city officials being brought in to it. I am not sure how I feel about the "revelation" of who the Red Cloud is as it was always obvious. The art here is solid as always and Sook and Anderson do a great job. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

    Written By: Mairghread Scott
    Art By: Paul Pelletier
    Colors By: Jordie Bellaire
    Letters By: Deron Bennett
    Price: $3.99

Mairghread Scott’s Batgirl continues to be one of the strongest runs since Gail Simone as she mixes the fun of Burnside with the emotion of Simone’s series. In this issue, Barbara is racing against the clock as she tries to keep her superhero identity a secret and save her father from Grotesque. Grotesque is still not the strongest villain and he switches sides pretty quickly, but I like the events he sets up to challenge Jim and Barbara’s relationship. This has been the heart of the series, and I hope we see it continue with Scott’s future arcs. Paul Pelletier’s has some strong pencils in this issue. I especially like his attention to detail when it comes to Barbara’s spine, there is even a panel where we see a scar from her previous surgery. Batgirl #29 does a good job at closing Grotesque’s storyline while keeping you interested for what's to come next. ~ Kat @ComicUno

Batman Beyond #26 The Final Joke Part Two, kicks off in Commissioner Barbara Gordon’s office as she is face to face with the Joker.  The real Joker is back and has been for some time now,  having planned and brought down the Wayne building in the last issue.  In this issue we see Batman and Robin racing against time to find survivors of the building collapse and saving Bruce and Dick from the falling elevator.  Barbara is able to get the upper hand on the Joker only to realize he had that planned also and is able to escape.  This leads her to tell Bruce who then reveals that the Joker has been back since issue 5 of the series and he only just now put all the pieces together. Next, up the Joker, he’s going after Robin and using a weapon that took down one before.  I can’t wait for the next issue.   Dan Jurgens is setting great pace and tone for this series and it feels like it’s hitting a solid run.  This issue also gives us the action-packed art stylings of the awesome team that is Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund.  This issue is firing on all cylinders and the next one issue promises even more. ~ Justin @ExileState

The DC Nuclear Winter Special is a nice collection of brief DC tales as told by Rip Hunter as a means of distraction. This book is set in a post-apocalyptic future, and it has some really fun stories in it. I think there is something for everyone. My personal favorite story is the Supergirl one, this is who Kara Is! Some other highlights are Firestorm's bittersweet goodbye, Batman 666's grim story for Damian and Green Arrow's heart-touching story. The art here is a nice match for each story. I felt each team gave everything they have. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

Heroes in Crisis continues to give us more questions than answers but in a positive way. This book, from issue one, has set up two key elements: The mental health of the inhabitants of Sanctuary, and the mystery of the murder of all those inhabitants save for Booster Gold and Harley Quinn. In doing so, King has crafted a tale that examines a different character or characters each issue giving us little clues to the identity of the killer. In this issue, the fingers seem firmly pointed in one direction but is that reality or another's perception of the events? We learn a bit more about Sanctuary and what services it actually provides that could give us some indication to the mystery at hand, and we take a deeper look inside one of the casualties, Lagoon Boy, and into Booster Gold’s stay there. King’s superb writing and examination of the psyches of these characters continues in this issue, and the murder mystery gets even more confusing, but again, in a good way. The art between Mann and Weeks is practically seamless here as well, and equally impressive and beautiful to look at. So far, this is a very intriguing and entertaining story that I am fully invested in. ~ Brant @BrantFowler

Starting a few moments after the last issue’s ending, the Terrifics and the Strong Family confront Doctor Dredd, revealed to be Java. Unfortunately, Java releases the Dark Elder from the Dark Multiverse and escapes. Both Mr. Terrific and Tom Strong incapacitate the giant. However as soon as the fight ends, the Terrifics disband (to the disappointment of Phantom Girl). If you’re a longtime reader this shouldn’t surprise you. The dialogue from Mr. Terrific and Res Mason (formerly Metamorpho) easily explain why they don’t need each other. It’s clear to readers that the Terrifics only stayed together out of necessity instead of comradery. The tone of the ending also creates a “series finale” feeling. However, DC Comics has not officially announced the title’s ending. This is a little disappointing because this would be a natural conclusion for The Terrifics. Honestly, I can’t see this title having much vitality after this story fully concludes. That’s why this issue is barely an average read. ~ Louis @SpiderMan1991

Peter, Miles, and Gwen are all competing for the same internship while they take on mutated rats and dogs. This was a fun book, I felt like I was watching Marvel's Spider-Man animated series, but I don't feel like it is taking anything from that show. This feels like its own thing setting these three young characters in this world injects lots of fun and youthful energy into the book like the early days of the Ultimate Universe. I enjoyed the art here, great crisp clean lines with vivid energetic colors really help sell the mood and feel for this universe. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

This is only the second book I’ve tried from the Catalyst Prime line from Lion Forge and I have to say I’ve been impressed with both. Now that they have this whole universe they’ve built up, it seems far more intriguing to me as well. Especially with the setting in New Orleans and Katrina referenced, and how a lot of the focus is on the community and pulling together to make it better there. That’s a pretty cool message. With this book, Quincredible features a teenager who is invulnerable, like Kick-Ass but doesn’t really think there’s anything he can do with his abilities until he comes in contact with some other heroes. His journey begins with him already powered, and kind of a smart loner, like Peter Parker. He has a crush on the smart girl in school, and he has regular run-ins with the neighborhood bullies.

This issue does a great job at establishing both Quin’s home life and life out in the world, as we see him get into trouble both with the bullies and during a rally in very different ways. The book doesn’t shy from real-life troubles and explores a lot of different facets of life in neighborhoods such as his with gun violence, police brutality, etc. The art is very solid, nice stylized figure work, though the paneling could be a bit more experimental to add some sense of action and movement or overall flavor to the aesthetic.

While the story and the character did enough to pull me back for a second issue, I felt it did suffer a bit from the same thing TV pilots often do. It felt at times like the writer was trying to find his footing with the story, and parts were just ever so slightly rushed or grazed over. Another pass could have made a stronger issue. I still enjoyed it and think it’s well worth trying. I’m certainly looking forward to reading more about Quin and his journey to becoming a hero.

    THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #10

Art By: Humberto Ramos, Michelle Bandini
Colors By: Edgar Delgado, Erick Arciniega
    Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
    Price: $3.99

The Amazing Spider-Man #10 is one of Spencer’s strongest issues of his run thus far, which is saying a lot because almost every issue has been a joy to read. This issue highlights why MJ is one of my favorite comic book characters. She finally opens up to her Look Ups group and reveals her innermost thoughts about dating Spider-Man. I love how Spencer intertwined this with Black Cat and Spider-Man’s fight with the Thieves Guild. MJ feels inferior towards these other super people that Peter could easily be with, she doesn’t understand why Peter keeps picking her. In a twist, the story doesn’t end in a jealous rampage, but instead with Peter and MJ's love grows stronger.

This issue also does a great job at filling up some potential plot holes. Spencer explains the exact reason why MJ got back together with Peter (that actually makes sense) and why Black Cat was angry with Peter all this time (which, again, actually makes sense). Humberto Ramos and Michelle Bandini were a great match on art. I was especially impressed with how clean and crip Bandini’s pencils were for the MJ scenes. I love how she designed the Look Ups' concealed meetings. The Amazing Spider-Man #10 has a ton of laugh’s as Spencer poke’s fun at the constant misspelling of Spider-Man's name, but the heart of this issue, and debatably the whole Spider franchise, is Mary Jane. ~ Kat @ComicUno

Having escaped Bullseye with the help of Mike Murdock, Daredevil is able to gather evidence and the ironclad kind. This time the Kingpin is done for and all the heroes show up to testify.  Everything finally worked out for Matt Murdock, but then it becomes clear that nothing went right.  The conclusion to Charles Soule’s run on Daredevil was one of Daredevil arc’s to ever be written.  Very well done indeed.    What’s up next for Daredevil will be revealed soon enough but we do know that Chip Zdarsky is on the title.  I know I’ll be picking it up to see how the title moves forward from this conclusion. ~ Justin @ExileState

Dead Man Logan is a story is about Old Man Logan dying from adamantium poisoning. His one mission is to get revenge on the villain who made him kill all his fellow X-Men in his timeline.
In this first issue, there were a lot of elements that I enjoyed. First off the cast of characters are great. Logan teams up with Clint Barton in his quest. This brings back the familiarity of the original Old Man Logan series, these moments had me laughing out loud. Next Miss Sinister shows up in the issue and she looks like she is going to be a formidable foe for Logan in the near future. Other characters in this book are Glob and Forge, which add different elements to this book. Glob is the less serious character and you as the reader will find his humor at the right time and it doesn't feel forced. As for Forge, we're really not sure what his motives are yet but he adds a mystery element in this first issue that has the reader guessing on what is coming next.

At the end of the day out of all the Wolverine books that have been out there recently this first issue shows lots of promise. So get your popcorn and get ready to prepare yourself for this 12 issue epic journey to find out if Dead Man Logan actually dies. ~ Mike @MSpiderSlayer

Riri Williams takes flight in her own title, meeting new friends, taking on villains and a few other surprises. I was not a fan of Riri as the lead of Invincible Iron Man, not because she was new or a girl, but because she was bland. Ewing has made her more interesting in this one issue that she was in that entire run. Through a nice conversation with a new friend, we get familiar with Riri Williams is outside of the Ironheart armor, and I love this Riri. There is also the mystery with the thing that Clash gave her as well as her new A.I. The A.I. based on Natalie. This inclusion is something that I hope sticks around I can see lots of depth coming from having the A.I. based on her friend that died. The art shines here, making both Clash and Ironheart's suits look kind of cool is a big job and the art team here succeeds doing that. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

With the Fantastic Four back, Marvel Two-In-One comes to an end. Fortunately, Chip Zdarsky uses this issue to tie-up any loose ends. Rachna Koul, the scientist who abandoned Johnny and Ben during their trip through the Multiverse, returns in this issue. Also, the Mole Man returns and there’s a great call back to his previous appearance (see Marvel Two-In-One #2). Plus there’s a great framing device at the beginning for Reed and BEn’s adventure from the previous issue. This issue also gives terrific character development for Johnny Storm. Witnessing Rachna’s dedication to her sister and talking to Sue, Johnny forgives his family for their deceptions. Johnny’s reason is that sometimes people try to carry the pain for their loved ones. This is a great lesson that reminds readers that the Fantastic Four are not just a team but a family. This was a fantastic finale to the series, however, it’s more enjoyable if you’ve read the title since its first issue. ~ Louis @SpiderMan1991

How I wish this was an ongoing series! There are so many great little character moments sprinkled throughout this issue that needs more time to flesh out. I can’t believe this title is ending next issue, there's just so much more to say about May and Annie’s relationship, that the series only has time to scratch the surface. The actual Spider-Geddon tie-in with Normie and these Spider monsters is the least interesting thing about the series. Although I do like the connection it brings with Annie’s visions, and the beautiful two page spread that Andres Genolet produced. I’ve really enjoyed Genolet’s style for these characters, this is the best I’ve seen May in years. I even like the little callbacks to her Spider-Girl run. Spider-Girls has the potential to be so much more, if only it had time to grow. ~ Kat @ComicUno

I never expected to enjoy a story with Spider-Gwen outside of her universe, but I am! Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #2 made me totally invested in these versions of Gwen, MJ, Peter, and Harry. Gwen is a Goblin, Peter is trying to reconnect his friend group, Harry was Spider-Man, and did MJ lose her girlfriend? So many interesting threads introduced here, and now our Gwen has to deal with the tense spider history of this world. Gwen literally has to fight herself if she wants to go back to the battle to help her Spider friends. There’s an irony here, not only because a Spider person has to fight a Goblin, but Gwen having to fight a Gwen Goblin. A Golbin - the same person who killed the original Gwen Stacy. The same event that made Green Goblin, Spider-Man's nemesis. As for the artwork, I enjoy Rosi Kampe’s close up scenes of Gwen, but I wish there was more detail with the other panels and characters. Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #2 is my favorite thing that has come out of Spider-Geddon, next to the return of Mayday.  ~ Kat @ComicUno
