BLOSSOM 666 #1
Written By: Cullen Bunn
Art By: Laura Braga
Letters By: Jack Morelli
Colors By: Matt Herms
Main Cover By: Laura Braga
Variant Covers By: Joe Esma; Francesco Francavilla; Robert Hack; Vic Malhotra
Price: $3.99

One of the Blossom Twins is the Anti-Christ, both want the title. What will they do to claim it? I wasn't sure what to think when this title was announced but Bunn's mastery over the eerie has drawn me in. Riverdale has made the Blossom's very intriguing and Bunn continues that while adding more layers to them. We don't know from this issue what the twins are competing for, but Bunn's wicked weaving of events leaves us with the notion, nothing good is about to happen. Laura Braga does a great job bringing the gothic visuals of the Blossom brood to life with an air of mystique laying over it. This book has shades of Cruel Intentions that leaves me with every intent on seeing where this story goes. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

THE AVANT-GUARDS #1
Written By: Carly Usdin
Art By: Noah Hayes
Colors By: Rebecca Nalty
Letters By: Ed Dukeshire
Price: $3.99

Hi-Fi Fight Club A.K.A. Heavy Vinyl was one of my favorite titles in the last few years. So I was very excited to see Carly Usdin working on another comic book title. The Avant-Guards is a solid start to a unique concept - a basketball team at a liberal arts college. As someone who went to a liberal arts college, this was super relatable to me. And trust me, seeing a sports club/team at a small liberal arts school is like seeing a three-headed monster at your doorstep. I’m looking forward to finding out how our athletic main character ended up at this school and to see what challenges will come her way. Noah Hayes blocky/cartoony artwork took me a bit to get used to as it was a very different style from Hi-Fi Fight Club. Overall, The Avant-Guards has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing where the story takes us. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 4 Stars

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #1
Created By: Joss Whedon
Written By: Jordie Bellaire
Art By: Dan Mora
Colors By: Raúl Angulo
Letters By: Ed Dukeshire
Main Cover By: Matthew Taylor
Variant Covers By: Various Artists
Price: $

Into every generation, a Slayer is born; a chosen one. Buffy Summers alone will wield the strength and skill to fight the vampires, demons and the forces of darkness; to stop the spread of evil and the swell of their number all while being a high school student. BOOM! Studios have once again reboot a beloved franchise for modern times and hit it out of the tomb! Jordie Bellaire captured every nuance of the original show along with every character quirk while never feeling like it was retreading or reinventing the show. To complete the feel BOOM! brought in the best person for the job, Dan Mora (Go Go Power Rangers) who captures the essence of each character to their actor while reinvigorating them with an energy and exuberance that brings the characters to life. This allows the voices of the actors to be heard while not limiting the experience but enhancing it. BOOM!, Bellaire, and Mora have rejuvenated the Buffy The Vampire Slayer franchise making it true to the classic for long-time fans like me, (who want to break out into a Snoopy Dance) while keeping it new reader-friendly for the fresh-blooded fans this series is bound to create. Welcome back to the Hellmouth for the first time indeed! ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 5 Stars

SHAZAM! #2
"Shazam And The Seven Magic Lands! Chapter 2"
Written By: Geoff Johns
Art By: Dale Eaglesham
Colors By: Mike Atiyeh
Letters By: Rob Leigh
Cover By: Dale Eaglesham & Alex Sinclair
Variant Cover By: Gary Frank & Brad Anderson
Price: $3.99

The Marvel Family go exploring while back home his foster parents realize they are all gone. Geoff Johns has brought the Marvel Family back for a whole new era, giving older fans the same magic we have come to expect while giving all new mythos to explore. I loved the inclusion of the "!" making more integral to the name SHAZAM! What this issue does best though is exploring the notions of family and we see this from the kids and parents perspective. The art by Dale Eaglesham just proves that even great things get better with age as Eaglesham's art was always great but here it just takes it to a new level. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

NAOMI #1
Written By: Brian Michael Bendis & David Walker
Art By: Jamal Campbell
Letters By: Josh Reed
Cover By: Jamal Campbell
Variant Cover By: Emanuela Lupacchino
Price: $3.99

Superman shows up in Port Oswego, Oregon a sleepy little town where everyone knows everyone, and nothing ever happens. But every small town has its secrets. Ladies, and Gentlemen, Brian Michael Bendis has arrived at DC Comics! This is the Brian Michael Bendis who wrote Ultimate Spider-Man and create Miles Morales. I don't know if writing with David Walker brought his A game or if it is Walker himself, but this is what I have been waiting for since Bendis came to DC. Naomi is a book that grabs you from the first page and takes on a whirlwind adventure with mystery and leaves you with a cliffhanger and wanting more. The one downside is that there were a lot of supporting characters introduced but not much time to give us a real feel for all of them, but the ones I think are going to be major players I feel like I know. The art by Jamal Campbel is some of his finest to date each page tells a whole story, panels emphasize the art like beautiful framed art pieces and his colors just blow me away. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - TERRA INCOGNITA #6
Written By: Scott Tipton & David Tipton
Art By: Carlos Nieto
Colors By: Fran Gamboa
Letters By: Neil Uyetake
Cover By: Tony Shasteen & JD Mettler
Variant Covers By: Various
Price: $3.99

Mirror Data has come to bring back the Mirror Barclay back, by any means necessary. The Tiptons have done it again, every single issue in this mini-series made me fall back in love with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-D all over again!. The issue could have had a few more pages though to give us more of the beautiful action scene Carlos Nieto gave us on the page. I can not wait to see where the Tipton's lead us to next, all I have to say is ENGAGE! ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1
Written By: Donny Cates
Art By: Geoff Shaw
Colors By: Marte Gracia
Letters By: VC’s Cory Petit
Cover By: David Marquez & Dean White
Price: $3.99

Thanos is dead. Long live Thanos! Donny Cates continues to prove his prowess as a writer. The Guardians are down to two members after the Infinity War and Thanos is left headless but even from beyond the grave his power strikes fear into some of the biggest powers in the Marvel Universe and Cates removes all security you thought you had, no one is safe. As good as the story is, I still have to note that this series is being relaunched yet again, and another roster change, but Cates does find a nice hook with this particular team. Geoff Shaw's art really sets the mood for this series along with Marte Carcia's colors. The team bring a lot of emotion and just the right touch of doom to the page. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 stars

MAN WITHOUT FEAR #4
Written By: Jed MacKay
Pencils By: Paolo Villanelli
Colors By: Andres Mossa
Letters By: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Kyle Hotz & Dan Brown
Variant Cover By: Declan Shalvey
Price: 3.99

Man Without Fear #4 is set in Matt Murdock’s hospital room with only Matt and Kingpin in this issue and it’s done perfectly.  The entire issue Kingpin believes Matt is asleep, so he freely speaks and recounts his first meeting with Daredevil.  A fight in the snow, a setup if there ever was one and Kingpin set it up.  Jed Mackay continues to do a great job on this series as it bridges the gap until the new Daredevil series begins.  The internal thoughts from Matt as he listens to Kingpin tells us exactly where Matt is in his recovery until he’s over listening to Kingpin gloat.  The last few panels set up the next issue and I can’t wait for it to hit the shelves.  Paolo Villanelli’s art, especially the flashback scenes with Daredevil vs Kingpin in the snow should not be missed. ~ Justin @ExileState
Verdict: 4 stars

Welcome Comic Frontline's Top 5 Panels! This is where the Frontline Six unite to pick their Top 5 comic panels from the week, and then you guys get to vote below which panel was your favorite. In next week's post, we will announce the winner from the poll.

Fan Panel Pick From Last Week - Jessica Jones: Purple Daughter #1 - Dazzler Fan

KAT

5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 - You Need A Buffy

This is just so Buffy!

4. Smooth Criminals #3 - We’re Friends

I love how these two very different misfits are becoming friends.

3. Batman #63 - 10:48
Selina and Bruce are both a bit twisted.

2. The Avant-Guards #1 - Sports?

As someone who went to a liberal arts college, I relate to this on many levels!

1. Naomi #1 - The Superman Complex

Naomi achieved something many DC titles don't, giving a COMPLETELY new view on Superman. This is a very fresh story seen through the eyes of character that I can't wait to learn more about.

5. Sideways #12 - Foreshadowing?

It may be nothing, but the whole thing with the statue seemed to be leading to some revelation. With one issue to go, who knows?

4.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 - Mouth Talking

This panel and specifically Xander's speech seemed to be the most accurate to me of the entire issue and I loved it!

3. Guardians of the Galaxy #1 - Seemed Lame

I'm not exactly a fan of Groot talking, but I have to admit this was a funny scene where Groot just blew off a very important meeting because it "seemed lame." haha

2. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 - Are They Mine?

This was a literal laugh-out-loud moment for me when I read this. Johnny seeing the two orange kids and just automatically assuming they're his was hilarious, as was Spidey's response.

1. Uncanny X-Men Annual #1 - Beaches Suck!

This was a great conversation that led to Cyclops saying "I was wrong" a couple of panels later. Him realizing all the tragedies that befell the X-Men at his hands and owning up to the fact that he is guilty and was wrong was a long time coming.

JAY

Honorable Mention: Teen Titans #26 - Alfred's Protection

Alfred loves all his boys equally and he is will to defend each of them against the others. I love how fatherly Alfred is, he is one of the best Dad's in comics.

5. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 - Inadequate Adulting

LOL Peter's neighbor taking shots at Boomerang is hilarious, I love it!

4. Teen Titans #26 - Ouch...

DAMN! Alfred hit Damian with some hard truths and those words are going to be rattling around in head for a while.

3. Buffy The Vampire Slayer #1 - Willow The Great

This is so spot on! Xander and Willow's voices are perfect here, this is early days of Buffy. This feels more right than the last few "Seasons" of the comic did.

2. Uncanny X-Men Annual #1 - Set It Right

YES! This is the Scott Summers that Morrison took from us and my smile is as big as Cable's is!

1. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 - She Did Once

This hits harder than any of his rogues. I love the simplicity of this scene that speaks so loud and with such raw emotion.

MIKE SPIDER-SLAYER

5. Guardians of the Galaxy #1 - This is My New Crew

I just like that a team is formed. However, looks like Cosmic Ghost Rider is not happy.

4. Teen Titans #26 - Life Vs. Fortnite

Round House had me laughing as he’s praying to not get sent to Arkham in exchange for Fortnight. It was a great scene!

3. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 - Be Discreet!

Typical Johnny always having to make an entrance even though Spidey told him to be discreet. This was hilarious!

2. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 - Are They Mine?

Looks like Johnny has slept with so many women he doesn't even know if he might have kids. This scene had me laughing out loud crying. The chemistry between Johnny and Peter was great and so impactful. Even though, it was only for a couple of panels.

1. The Immortal Hulk #12 - Monster!

This is such a sad scene between Bruce and his dad. It's such a gut punch. From a little boy, Bruce has always been called a monster. No wonder he has so much rage built up in him. He never felt loved from one of the people that is supposed to love him the most.

Top 5 Panels Of The Week - 1/23/19

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 - You Need A Buffy
Smooth Criminals #3 - We’re Friends
Batman #63 - 10:48

Kickstart the Week with Cornrows #1: Part One of the Urban Fantasy Comic Book Series

$

By: Nicole D’Andria

Interested in entering a gritty world for fans of shows such as The Wire, Daredevil, and The Punisher? Cornrows is the latest comic book that turns the “super” and maybe even the “hero” on its head in this “superhero” series. I spoke with writer Brian Hawkins about the beginning of his urban fantasy series.

Cornrows is written by Brian Hawkins with artwork from Marcio Loerzer (X-O Manowar), inking by Adriana Abreu, gray tones by David Fox, and lettering by Guido Martinez. The series follows Theo Mayfield, a high school P. E. teacher living in Baltimore, Maryland. The city is shaken by the death of Theo’s former student,Malik Williams. With no one doing anything, Theo takes it upon himself to go out with a mask and get revenge. But things get complicated fast, and without any superpowers to save him, Theo must survive the gritty story laid out in Cornrows: There Are No More Heroes.

The creative team is trying to raise $3,509 for the first issue before January 31, 2019 at 11:59 PM EST. Rewards include digital ($5) and physical ($15) copies of Cornrows: There Are No Heroes Part I, plus an original pin-up with a bookmark ($17) with an option for a Nathan Kelly (DREXLER) variant ($25). These are among several other reward tiers, which you can see on their Kickstarter page.

Enjoy my interview with writer Brian Hawkins below!

Brian Hawkins

Me: You mentioned that fans of The Wire, Daredevil, and The Punisher in particular will enjoy this series. What about Cornrows do you think will draw fans of these TV shows in?

Hawkins: The grittiness of it, the realness, while at the same time offering something ‘else.’ The Wire was real and gritty and it showed us life on the streets of a specific part of Baltimore. However, there were aspects of it, some of the characters were larger than life. Avon Barksdale is one. Omar is another. He really became larger than life, but still somehow he could be inside this real world that The Wire presented. The same can be said about The Punisher andDaredevil. Neither one have superpowers—you could argue Matt has something, but it’s not a superpower, it’s a sense that has been incredibly enhanced… You could also argue that he believes this about himself so it’s all the more real. And The Punisher just has a skill set and drive. Cornrows has all of that—but it’s still different, it’s a different story, one of community, city, and self-realization.

Me: Who is Theo Mayfield and how will readers be able to relate to him?

Hawkins: Theo Mayfield the character is just a man, a teacher. His background in martial arts gives him a specific set of skills that he one day decides to use to fix something he believes is wrong—avenge the death of a former student of his. On a larger scale, Theo is you, me, anyone who has ever thought about making a difference in anyway, but especially physically going out and trying to make it happen. Theo decides to actually do that.

Me: Why did you decide to set the story in Baltimore, Maryland?

Hawkins: I live in Virginia so I like to put characters that I create in a familiar place. Baltimore, Maryland isn’t that far from me—Virginia, DC, and Maryland are all a part of the ‘DMV’ (DC, Maryland, Virginia), so we all kind of connect with each other and rep each other at times, like it’s one big hub. Also, I’m familiar with the toughness of Baltimore and I wanted Theo in the midst of that. I teach (English and Writing) in DC and I live in Virginia, so I’m familiar. This story was a personal one, not because I’ve experienced it but because there’s a lot of me in it, from a human condition perspective. The story, in this form and in this particular arc, was inspired by the four missing DC girls, which happened a couple years back.

Me: This story blends realism and the "superhero" world. Why did you decide to put these two somewhat contradictory aspects together for this comic book series?

Hawkins: I believe they go together. Superheroes are just metaphors for how we see ourselves or what we would like to be or sometimes what we do not want to be—sometimes we have to look at things in a mirror to understand it. That’s what superheroes are—mirrors for us, hyperbolic and exaggerated in the physical sense but still mirrors. The ability to fly is just about ascending, higher self versus lower self, being the best that you can be—succeeding, being free; super strength is about overcoming insecurities and our own weaknesses. So, all I’ve done with the character of Theo in Cornrows is strip him of the fantastical part—I’ve returned those elements to the internal, for him to deal with internally, but he still has to do all those things externally, he still has to do some ‘super’ feats in order to do what he believes is right. He just will do it as a regular person like you and me.

Me: Why did you decide to do the book in gray tones vs. black-and-white or color?

Hawkins: Well, I wanted to strip the “color” away from it. It’s not a typical superhero book and one of the major nuances of those books is color interiors. I wanted an “un-colored” feel and nuance that felt as if the superhero “feel” of this hero book had been taken away. Black-and-white is a style of comic so that wouldn’t work. That has its own kind of nuance and feel. So, gray tones felt right. It gave Theo and this story a noir kinda feel and energy—like it’s on a black-and-white television, which isn’t really black-and-white—it’s just no color, which is more gray tones.

Me: What can you tell us about your creative house, GNOSIS Entertainment? What's it mission statement and your future plans for it?

Hawkins: GNOSIS is about me, who I am, it’s what I believe in—knowing oneself, that great MAXIM from the Oracle at Delphi—Gnothi Seauton, “Man, Know Thyself.” I wanted my creative endeavors to be about that, to carry that, to embody that. It’s about knowing that all stories are about one thing—the human condition. And that’s why stories in all forms and mediums work, because it’s always about us and in some regard coming to know who we truly are.

As for my future plans for it—just to create. I view it as an IP company and I am not trying to make it anything really. Just want it to be what it is and to facilitate stories through it for myself and to the rest of the world, to put them out there in the Universe. I would like for it to grow, I would like for it to be there for my family, my children…

Me: And where do you see Cornrows going in the future?

Hawkins: I would like to see a live-action Cornrows. I would—I can see it, I really can. Not that I think that it’s good enough for that, but I can envision Theo in live-action and the possible impact a character like him could have on the world. But the comic itself, I would like to tell the full story. I have a full story in mind for Theo and Cornrows. 12 Issues.

Me: What is the number one reason why people should pledge money to your project?

Hawkins: It’s an honest project. It’s really about creating for me—the book is already finished; Marcio Loerzer, Adriana Abreu, and David Fox have been an incredible team. They’ve worked hard. So, it’s product that you’re guaranteed to get. Marcio, the artist, has worked without being paid upfront; he was willing to go backend for this story, whatever backend would be. And that’s how we finished the book. So, the Kickstarter is about paying the artist and really getting the rewards out, getting the book in the hands of potential readers so hopefully we can do an Issue 2.

Me: What inspirational words do you have for aspiring comic book writers?

Hawkins: Write about the human condition, in some form. Find that form that is a part of you and who you are. And write. Also, writing is a craft, and so there’s some honor that should be given to it—learn it, continue to learn it, refine and revisit and revise, understand all of writing and what it means to write. Art in general is this way, any and all kinds of art.

Me: Thank you for taking the time to give us this urban fantasy comic book, Brian! Check out Theo as he tries to bring some justice to the world of Cornrows with the Kickstarter here.

BETTY VERONICA #2
Written By: Jamie Lee Rotante
Art By: Sandra Lanz
Colors By: Kelly Fitzpatrick
Letters By: Jack Morelli
Cover By: Sandra Lanz
Variant Covers By: Veronica Fish And Ryan Sook
Price: $3.99

Betty & Veronica are having a hard Senior Year so far and haven't spent much time together. This is a new twist with a familiar feel on the B & V relationship. The two are a team but of course, boys come into the picture and make things complicated, but that isn't where all the drama comes from with Betty's father losing his job, Moose and Midge having problems, Ethel running for president and the Lodges putting pressure on Veronica. The inter-character dynamics here are true Archie, but I think it may have been too much in one issue even though I like it as it places us better into their world. The art by Lanz invokes that throwback to classic Archie comics while maintaining the modern feel of Riverdale. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¼ Stars

Find out how the one-time villain turned ally, turned Keeper becomes the Dark Ranger. I have to say I think Bennett shines when she slows down the big action and gets to the heart of the Rangers as she did here. There is still action and conflict but the heart of this story is about Heckyl and him becoming the Dark Ranger. I loved the twist put on his origins and how his becoming the Ranger caused the very thing he was trying to prevent and the end of another Ranger. But I think my favorite part was the end between Kim, Heckyl and Cam. The art here was also more reserved, less chaotic which was appreciated. The backup story may be my favorite so far as a whole. I really enjoyed the buddy cop relationship with Blue Senturion and NInjor. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

Verdict: 4 ¾ Power Bolts

ACTION COMICS #1007
"Leviathan Rising Part 1"
Written By: Brian Michael Bendis
Art By: Steve Epting
Colors By: Brad Anderson
Letters By: Josh Reed
Cover By: Steve Epting
Variant Cover By: Francis Manapul
Price: $3.99

Jimmy is onto a big lead, Lois is about to reveal the biggest story of her life to her father, and someone is taking out big organizations. I have to hand it to Bendis, he balances the three sides of this story very well and does so by connecting it to the focal character. Jimmy is the man of Action again, Lois opening up to her father leaves the most badass woman in comics vulnerable meanwhile Superman is getting the scope of the bigger overall story. Steve Epting does a great job delivering the emotions needed for this story with Lois and her father, but also from Jimmy and Superman. I am not sure how revealing Superman's identity will play out and I hope it will be better than last time, but I am in for the ride. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

BATGIRL #31
Written By: Mairghread Scott
Art By: Paul Pelletier
Colors By: Jordie Bellaire
Letters By: Deron Bennett
Price: $3.99

Wouldn’t life be easier if everyone knew Batgirl and Barbara Gordon were the same person? In Batgirl #31, worlds collide as Batgirl tries to keep the lives of the people in Barbara Gordon’s life safe, while still keeping her identity under wraps. The political backdrop hasn’t totally latched me onto this story yet, but I do like the inclusion of Bard. He’s a real thorn in Batgirl’s side. Unlike the last arc, I'm also intrigued by this arc’s villain. Batgirl and Cormorant both seem pretty evenly matched, which makes for some great action sequences. Paul Pelletier has been a great fit for Mairghread Scott’s darker style of storytelling. This arc of Batgirl continues to be a slow burn but delivers some intriguing character work to make this issue worth picking up. ~ Kat @ComicUno

Art By: Brett Booth

Cover By: Pasqual Ferry and Dave McCaig
Variant Covers By: Chris Stevens and Sunny Gho

Batman Beyond #28, The Final Joke Part Four opens with Batman and Robin fight for their lives again a cyborg Joker that is being controlled by the real Joker.  This fight takes place throughout the book until Dick Grayson has had enough, he takes the cyborg out with a nicely placed flying car to the back that shatters the cyborg all over the cityscape of Gotham.  The Joker though has gotten exactly what he came for in this fight, Robin.  Next issue, can Batman stop a repeat of what happened to Jason Todd from happening to Matt?   Dan Jurgens continues to tell a great story that keeps you on the edge of your seat to see what direction the Joker goes in next. The Art by Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund pulls you into the action and keeps the tension up on every page. ~ Justin @ExileState

On the run Booster Gold discovers a clue that could change the investigation into the Sanctuary Slaughter. Meanwhile, Lois' article is out and everyone knows about the existence of Sanctuary. Man I am loving the twists and turns and the character moments in this event. So Wally's birthdate would be different? Is this a clone? Was the real Wally West never back? Were all of the heroes killed in the slaughter not the real versions of the heroes? King keeps us guessing and I love it! The art is top notch! The emotions and action are felt on every page and I love the small things like the way Commander Steel's eyes are expressive or Blue & Gold having a beer, it all conveys so much in body language. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION IDW 20/20 #1
Written By: Peter David
Art By: J.K. Woodward
Letters By: Gilberto Lazcano
Cover By: J.K. Woodward
Variant Cover By: Gabriel Rodriguez & Nelson Daniel
Price: $4.99

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of IDW they are looking forward or backward 20 years in time in their books and this time we look back 20 years when Picard was the Captain of the Stargazer. Peter David does a solid job looking back on this time period, but I feel a something was missing. I would rather have had this issue explore the relationship of Picard, Beverly, and Jack than the conflict between these aliens. But that is not saying the issue was bad, it wasn't, it was a really good Star Trek story and I think getting Peter David to write this, his books and comics in the franchise have all been top notch. The art here was really well done, I felt like I was looking at Patrick Stewart and Gates McFadden. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

The omnipotent beings of the Universe are at war to see who is the most powerful and wreaking havoc on the universe, it is up to the captains and their crews to settle this war. I have been looking forward to this event for a while and it was worth it. Q is someone who has a history with 3 out of 4 of the crews here but the Tiptons took other omnipotent beings from the Franchise's history and placed them in here, I have to admit I was impressed and disappointed by who they chose to include, I would have loved to have seen a Caretaker (Voyager) and a Prophet (DS9) be included to have one from each of the series included. I also feel like Enterprise was slighted here, I loved that series and it is the only main Prime Timeline (Discovery isn't there yet) not there. The time frames are interesting with Worf on the Enterprise E, and 8 years after Sisko made Captain so this is sometime before Nemesis so he knows Sisko, but Sisko doesn't know him. Worf should also know that he is a "Prophet". This is also around the 6th or 7th season of Voyager. The art here is good but needs some refinement with the faces to get them to look more like their portrayers. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

AGE OF X-MAN ALPHA #1

Variant Covers By: Rahzzah; Whilce Prtacio & Jesus Aburtov; George Perez & Chris Sotomayor Price: $4.99

Nate Summers, X-Man has created the perfect world for Mutants where everyone on the planet is one. So this is sort of the opposite of House of M in that this world was created so everyone is a mutant which is an interesting concept but not sure how I feel about it yet. The issue was good but served largely as a "pick up this mini-series" which Marvel has become so well known for with their events. But even with that, I like some concepts, like how babies are now hatched, and people are not allowed to be intimate with each other. So the book accomplished its goal to get me intrigued and on board for the event. The other thing that has me wondering is why did Nate replace Henry/Beast as a founding X-Man and not one of the other members? The art here was solid, I thought the redesigns were new and fresh while maintaining a familiar feel to them. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #14
Written By: Nick Spencer
Art By: Chris Bachalo
Colors By: Chris Bachalo
Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Price: $3.99

Nick Spencer begins a new arc for what’s quickly become one of my favorite Spider-Man runs. This issue showcases the new direction of the Lizard and Rhino. I especially enjoyed the Lizard’s interaction with Peter and MJ as the Lizard is struggling to give his family a normal life. I want to see more fleshing out from Curt Connor’s family as individual characters because the small glimpse we saw of them here has me intrigued. Aunt May's storyline also really surprised me. We get to see the badass side of her character as she saves a homeless man with one of Peter’s experiments. It reminded me of why Aunt May is such a cool character. She has a lot of spunk! Chris Bachalo’s artwork is what brought the issue down. I’m not a huge fan of his art style, and it didn’t fit the characters well. Overall, The Amazing Spider-Man #14 continues to touch upon classic stories with a twist, and I’m absolutely loving it. ~ Kat @ComicUno

Man Without Fear #5 continues the recovery and healing of Matt Murdock, where he asked himself the same question over and over again.   What is Pain for?  Reliving the lesson taught to him by his father, the only lesson he could teach his son.  This series and especially this issue break down Matt Murdock, what is going on in his head and what path he will choose going forward.  Jed MacKay has told a story all Daredevil fans knew we would see. Live is hard for a Murdock, but they don’t quit and they don’t run.  Daredevil is coming back and he’s already got the Kingpin feeling the Fear. ~ Justin @ExileState

MS. MARVEL #37
Written By: G. Willow Wilson
Art By: Nico Leon
Colors By: Ian Herring
Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Price: $3.99

Ms. Marvel #37 had everything that I love about this series in one issue. Kamala and Gabe are on babysitting duty, and, of course, everything goes wrong. In the mix of things, Kamala must save Jersey City from itself, which is a very poetic way to start wrapping up this series. I loved that G. Willow Wilson allowed all of Kamala’s supporting characters to be involved in this adventure because they are also such an important part of this title. Their personalities were expressed so well with Nico Leon’s artwork. But what made this issue so highly rated for me was the emotional punch of Sheikh Abdullah’s heart attack. It shows that no matter what Kamala won’t be able to help everyone. Ms. Marvel #37 is a great penultimate issue and makes me even more excited to read Wilson’s swan song to one of Marvel’s most important characters of the decade. ~ Kat @ComicUno

Kickstart the Week with The Damned Knight

By: Nicole D’Andria

A comic book over 10 years in the making, The Damned Knight is a black-and-white origin story of a medieval knight’s journey through life, death and the afterlife. I spoke with the writer about his passion project.

Nathan Webb (Britformers) wrote and drew The Damned Knight over a decade ago. This 28 page medieval era story is set in the Avebury stone circle. It is a necromantic fantasy horror comic book that pursues the themes of love, war, betrayal and mystery.

The project has already reached its $457 (£350) goal but will continue to accept pledge until February 22, 2019 at 1:51 PM EST. Rewards include digital (£2/$2.62) and physical (£5/$7) copies of The Damned Knight as well as signed original artwork (£30/$39) and back cover art (£100/$131). You can make a pledge on their Kickstarter page.

I spoke with Nathan about The Damned Knightbelow.

Nathan Webb

Me: What is the personality of the fallen knight in The Damned Knight like and why will readers enjoy going along on his journey?

Webb: The Damned Knight is a fallen hero both physically and spiritually. Once he was an ideological warrior who fought for his beliefs; but death changes a person. Can TDK find redemption, or is he damned to live an afterlife of hatred and violence?

Me: You drew this story over 10 years ago—why did you decide to go back to it and put it on Kickstarter? And have you made any changes to it since then?

Webb: I wrote and drew The Damned Knight over a decade ago, with the hope of having it published in an anthology book, but sadly it never happened.

After a stint in the Army I decided to return to drawing comics, which was a passion of mine in my youth.

Last year I did a Kickstarter, Britformers #1, which was a collaboration with a friend who had experience with crowdfunding. After seeing how simple and rewarding KS was, I decided it was time for me to revisit a story I had never quite managed to get to fruition. TDK was always meant to be an origin story, but it works well as a standalone story; if the book takes off I may well write a sequel.

Upon rereading TDK I realised just how bad my spelling and grammar was, so the first thing I had to do was re-letter the entire book.  I also had to redo the cover title as graphic design has changed a lot in the last decade and the old cover looked quite outdated. But the artwork itself has remained unchanged.

Me: For people unfamiliar with the Avebury stone circle, how would you describe it and why did you decide to include it in your story?

Webb: Everyone knows of the Stone Circle in Salisbury (Stonehenge) but few people outside of my home county of Wiltshire have heard of the Avebury Stones, which is actually the largest ancient stone circle in Britain sporting over 100 stones and a circumference of several miles. I’ve always been fascinated by Avebury and its dark and sordid history, which made it all the more creepy because it still, to this day, is a largely undiscovered tourist attraction.

Me: You went with a modest $459 goal. How did you come up with this number and what will it help you achieve?

Webb: Having already found a printer familiar with comics on my last Kickstarter, I had a fair idea of prices and my initial goal was simple to cover at cost the minimum order and postage. Thankfully the KS has already surpassed the minimum requirements and hopefully if TDK gets enough backers to fund a larger print run I might actually turn a profit.

Me: What is the number one reason why people should pledge money to your Kickstarter project?

Webb: Anyone who’s a fan of horror, fantasy or medieval comics should find TDK a riveting read and the more people that back it, the more likely it is I’ll be able to create the sequel.

Me: For people unfamiliar with your previous work, what can you tell them about your last Kickstarter, Britformers?

Webb: My previous Kickstarter was a very different comic in many ways, transforming robots in 1960s London. But as with TDK the main character is an anti-hero, so maybe that’s a theme that both books have in common. Anyone wishing to read Britformers#1 can buy it digitally or physically from our Facebook page.

Me: What inspirational words do you have for aspiring comic book writers?

Webb: It’s only taken a decade to get this book to print but it’s made me realise I should never give up on a dream.

Me: Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, Nathan. If you’re reading this and interested in seeing a medieval knight’s journey through life, death and the afterlife, check out the Kickstarter for The Damned Knight here.

Do you have a Kickstarter? Want to be interviewed about it and have the project featured on "Kickstart the Week?" Let me know in the comments below or message me on my website.

Welcome Comic Frontline's Top 5 Panels! This is where the Frontline Six unite to pick their Top 5 comic panels from the week, and then you guys get to vote below which panel was your favorite. In next week's post, we will announce the winner from the poll.

Fan Panel Pick From Last Week - Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 - Are They Mine?

KAT

Honorable Mention - West Coast Avengers #7 - It’s Jeff!

I can't believe I can fall in love with a character with just one panel, but I'm in love with Jeff!

5. West Coast Avengers #7 - ASL

I love how Kelly Thompson puts Clint and Kate's close relationship on display. It's cool to see Kate know sign language because of Clint.

4. The Flash Annual #2 - Where is Everyone?

We need answers. I want a Flash family book!

3. Ms. Marvel #37 - A Heart Attack

I didn't expect to get that emotional punch, but it made the issue for me.

2. Batgirl #31 - Because of Me

This was a pretty powerful panel where Babs see's the consequences of her actions as Batgirl.

1. Action Comics #1007 - I Married Superman

Damn, I really loved this conversation! It's probably one of my favorite scenes of the series thus far.

BRANT

Honorable Mention - Heroes in Crisis #5 - There's BLOOD in the Way

Love the metaphor here.

5. West Coast Avengers #7 - I Need a Love Story

Just edged out over the Jeff scene Kat mentioned, but scenes like this make me utter words I never thought I would: I just love Gwenpool!

4.  The Flash Annual #2 - Where is Everyone?

Like Kat said, we need answers!

3. Action Comics #1007 - I Married Superman

A great and powerful scene as Lois drops a bombshell on General Lane.

2. Teen Titans Annual #1 - I Will Hunt You Down...

Man, I would NOT want to cross D'Jinn!

1. Heroes in Crisis #5 - He Hit Me Good

This is such an emotional scene for Harley that shows how truly tortured she is, both physically and psychologically.

CHRIS

5. Action Comics #1007 - I Married Superman

Lois and her dad.

4. Book of Magic #4 - Into the Dreaming

3. Heroes in Crisis #5 - The Nightmares

2.  The Terrifics #12 - Joyride

Plastic Man is totally dead.

1. Mysteries of Love In Space #1 - Never Alone

JAY

Honorable Mention: Heroes in Crisis #5 (Of 9) - Clues In Crisis...

Making this the "Top 5" really sucks because this panel is so awesome and deserves to be in the poll but I had to place the other five above it. Look at the freaking awesomeness in this, they worked out "Heroes In Crisis" into the art without being super obvious. I love this series, and I love the art this shows you how great it is, and I love looking for hidden clues.

5. Heroes in Crisis #5 (Of 9) - You Learn Something New Every Day

King gets every character right on the money and this relationship with Babs and Harley, I really dig it. To see two women who survived the abuse of the Joker team up without ever mentioning it directly is so powerful.

4. Action Comics #1007 - He Can't See My Faults...

Talking about getting characters! Bendis shows how much he knows Lois and Superman. I love how they see each other and Bendis does a great job showing us how they see each other.

3. The Flash Annual #2 - It's All Wrong!

YES! YES! YES! YES! Joshua Williamson gets it! One of Bart's powers is that he can sense changes in the timeline and FINALLY it is mentioned here, BUT that isn't all. I love the nods to Bart's history to the Flash Family here, this was so SPROCKING CRASH!

2. The Flash Annual #2 - Grief...

Sometimes you don't need words, just a visual and Scott Kolins does that here. This scene is so damn powerful, you feel Barry & Iris' grief and emotions pouring out of this page.

1. The Flash Annual #2 - My... Wally...

Man talk about emotions! Kolins does it here we see Iris running the emotional gambit going through it all and Barry's emotions are so well defined as well. But I loved how Williamson knows the bond between Iris and Wally and that moment where she can barely utter those words, "My... Wally..." speak volumes. This is the best issue of The Flash I have read in years and panels like this illustrate why.

OBERON #1
Created & Written By: Ryan Parrott
Art By: Milos Slavkovic
Letters By: Charles Pritchett
Cover By: Milos Slavkovic
Incentive Cover By: Marco Rudy
Price: $3.99

Bonnie Blair is home-schooled, has no friends, and just found out that her life has been a lie by the banished King of Fairies, Oberon himself. Ryan Parrott (Go Go Power Rangers) has done it again! With just one issue I am hooked! I love mythology and ever since I read A Midsummer Night's Dream as a kid I have loved the world of Oberon and the rest of the characters, then came Gargoyles which took my love for the characters in a new direction and now I am at my third tier of fandom thanks to Parrott. The characters are engaging, I feel for Bonnie, who is just finding her life has been a lie, and I am thoroughly intrigued about Oberon and his servant Nicholas. The art by Milos Slavkovic is AWESOME! He uses the art perfectly sets the tone of the series and makes you feel like you are in this magic world of the King of the Fairies. The second issue can't get here fast enough. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

Dragonfly and Dragonflyman get set to stay on their new Earths and each has a Stinger by their side to help them. This book is one of my favorite indie titles of the last year! It started off as this stark contrast of two Batman-esque characters or the worlds with Dragonflyman being like the Batman '66, and Dragonfly being more like Dark Knights Return versions of Batman. That in and of itself was a unique spin, but then we got the blurring of the lines where they start to take on some of the other's traits as they adapt to their new worlds that really holds my attention. The writers and artist all do such a great job blending their voices and styles to where it reads like a symphony. The only thing wrong about The Wrong Earth #6 is that we have to wait until 2020 for the next chapter of this world, especially after that ending! ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

While Riverdale PD investigates the disappearance of Rick Mantle, Reggie follows his dad's instructions and Betty & Veronica start investigating Archie. I really enjoy this title, I shouldn't but I do. I grew up on classic Archie, and Waid's run was a nice modern wholesome, but Spencers puts a little something to it that I really like. Spencer does a great job balancing the number of characters and story in this issue we have Jughead's, Archie's, The Pussycats', Cheryl's, Reggie's Midge's and more and yet I never felt overwhelmed by it, instead I felt more a part of it. The art does a great job balancing the two artists who both have a great updated classic style. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

ARCHIE 1941 #5
Written By: Brian Augustyn & Mark Waid
Art By: Peter Krause
Colors By: Kelly Fitzpatrick
Letters By: Jack Morelli
Price: $3.99

Archie 1941 marks the last issue for Mark Waid’s monumental run on Archie, and it sadly doesn’t close with the same revolutionary feel of his main Archie run. I was especially upset with the representation of Betty & Veronica here. Waid’s main Archie run reinvented these characters to become defined as individuals, while still building their relationship with Archie. In this series, Betty is so defined by her relationship with Archie to the point where she felt weak. Archie 1941 had an opportunity to show how much Archie has grown as a franchise, but instead, the series revels a bit too much in the past. Peter Krause’s artwork has been the strongest aspect of this series. His inking style brought the perfect tone to the dark, gloom of Waid and Augustyn’s script. Archie 1941 is a standard mini-series that doesn’t do enough to celebrate Waid’s contribution to reinvigorating Archie Comics and leaves me unsatisfied to an otherwise perfect run. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 2 ½ Stars

WWE #25
Written By: Dennis Hopeless

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe. As a wrestling fan, this is one of those feuds that is kind of a dream come true.

If you followed AJ Styles and Samoa Joe on the indie circuits, through Ring of Honor, and their epic years-long feud in TNA/Impact, you know what I’m talking about. Seeing these two finally tear it up on the big stage of the WWE was not just a treat, but almost like a reward for sticking with them for so long. We, as fans were able to partake in the validation of these two phenomenal athletes (pun very much intended).

The WWE version of their feud took things to a personal level with Joe inserting himself into AJ’s family. What we got here in this issue of BOOM! Studios’ retelling was a very nicely condensed version of the month-long drama without missing a beat or feeling like anything was left out. In fact, things were added to make the story even more well rounded!

The way AJ’s wife Wendy was written in this issue added a new layer to the story that painted a beautiful picture of family and of a wife knowing her husband so well as to push just the right buttons to get the best out of him she could. Even though we never saw her face (I’m assuming it was a rights issue, and Acuna handled the placement of her hair and turns of her head perfectly without it looking too obvious), we got just the right amount of emotion and input from her to sell this story.

The action between AJ and Joe was done extremely well as usual. I will continue to reiterate that Hopeless knows these characters like the back of his hand, and Acuna can draw their likenesses and always excels on getting the in-ring (and out of the ring) action just right.

This issue lived up to the story it represented, and this entire arc with AJ Styles has been one of my favorite stories to date. ~ Brant @BrantFowler
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

THE GIRL IN THE BAY #1 (of 4)
Written By: J.M. DeMatteis
Art By: Corin Howell
Colors By: James Devlin
Letters By: Clem Robins
Cover By: Corin Howell
Price: $3.99

The Girl in the Bay is an intriguing resurrection story centered around a troubled teenager in 1960s Brooklyn. Kathy lives in the time of drugs, sex, and rock’n’roll and has embraced every most of it to the fullest. Sadly, that leads her to make some poor decisions that ultimately lead to her demise, setting us on the twisted tale of her return.

DeMatteis brilliantly captures both the era of the story and the location, referencing key events in that time frame like the Manson murders and the Summer of Love. Kathy very much feels like a girl of the times, quoting meaningful song lyrics while high on an acid trip and rebelling against every type of authority.

Howell’s artwork is equally skilled as we see the subtle differences between 1969 and 2019 Brooklyn with the rich history and the classic dwellings remaining intact, only updated for the times. And the emotional impact that flows off of Kathy whether she’s scared, angry, high or any other emotion resonates with the reader making us feel what she feels.

The interesting thing about the story isn’t just that Kathy dies and comes back 50 years later. It’s a decent hook, and when matched with Howell’s art, is intriguing enough to make you want to read the story. But the twist of what she finds when she does come back takes the story in an unexpected direction leaving the reader both captivated and confused enough to want to find out the answers almost as badly as Kathy does.

This book is rich with mysteries at every turn, some sort of supernatural element that we can’t quite yet define, and at the center of it, a girl in turmoil over a lost life and a sadness for what she left behind. Excellent first issue. ~ Brant @BrantFowler
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

ADVENTURES OF THE SUPER SONS #7 (OF 12)
"Noir Town"
Written By: Peter J. Tomasi
Pencils By: Carlo Barberi
Inks By: Matt Santorelli
Colors By: Protobunker
Letters By: Rob Leigh
Cover By: Dan Mora
Price: $3.99

The Super Sons are on a prison planet for kids and they are determined to break free but first Damian has to find Jon. Every month I can count on one book to make me smile, entertain men, and make me love comics all over again and this is it! The story is simple with Damian looking for Jon, but Tomasi makes it fun and entertaining. To see Damian gong through this planet to find Jon shows the bond they have. While Damian is looking for Joker Jr. and Jon, Rex Luthor is creating a new Gang all around the planet and I have to say I loved the scene where the new Gizmo captures Damian. It is great to have Carlo Barberi on the book again, he brings great energy to the book that makes me feel like I am watching Saturday Morning Cartoons again. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

BATMAN #64
"The Price: The Price Of Justice Part 1 of 4 A Batman/Flash Crossover Event"
Written By: Joshua Williamson
Art By: Guillem March
Colors By: Tomeu Morey
Letters By: Steve Wands
Cover By: Chris Burnham & Nathan Fairbairn
Variant Cover By: Sean Murphy
Price: $3.99

The Flash and Batman team up again, this time to solve the Sanctuary murders which include, Wally West. Joshua Williamson is on a roll! Between last week's Flash Annual and this, he is in the zone! I want to ask why isn't he working on more books for DC? The way Williamson writes the Justice League here has me yearning for a Williamson Justice League book! I love a great mystery and that is what Williamson is so great at doing which makes him the perfect person to write the two greatest detective minds in comics. The ending here leaves me wanting and needing to know more, could Gotham Girl be a bigger piece to a bigger puzzle? March does a great job setting the darker tones of the Batman atmosphere while balancing it out with the lightness of the Flash along with great attention to details has him the perfect match for this story. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

Look up in the sky... It's a bird... It's a plane... It's a story we have heard a hundred times before, but never this well done! I just read the best Superman movie n/ever made! Marv Wolfman has shown that writers can get better with age, yes he wrote this over a decade ago, but you wouldn't know that by the story. Wolfman knows these characters like his fans do like they are a part of his family, each voice is perfect, every nuance of the character is perfect. This is the best I have ever seen Lois Lane or Clark Kent portrayed in any medium. Where has Castellini been? I feel like a dolt not noticing his talent before this. His Lois is the best I have ever seen, he somehow has managed to capture her very essence in every panel she is in, you feel like Clark feel, your heart races, she is amazing and Castellini brings it all to life like never before. Perfect for the new and veteran comic book fans alike, but leaves me wondering two things; 1.) Why it took DC over a decade to publish this? 2.) Why isn't Marv Wolfman writing Superman monthly with Castellini on art? ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

YOUNG JUSTICE #2
"Seven Crises Part 2"
Written By: Brian Michael Bendis
Art By: Patrick Gleason & Emanuela Lupacchino
Inks By: Ray McCarthy (pp 9-18)
Colors By: Alejandro Sanchez
Letters By: Josh Reed
Cover By: Patrick Gleason & Alejandro Sanchez
Variant Cover By: Sanford Green
Price $3.99

The team begins to find each other and meet Amethyst on Gem World while in a flashback Cassie runs into her Grandfather Zeus. Bendis is doing a great job continuing the main story with Gem World but giving longtime fans some answers we wanted about Cassie without laying it all out at once. I really like the way Bendis used Zeus reminds me of classic DC where the Gods were shaped by the world today, also a nice way to bring in more of that air of mystery surrounding her in the first issue. I am looking forward to seeing the next issue to find out about Conner. Gleason and Lupacchino did a great job bringing the classic feel of Young Justice with the same youthful energy that the original series brought.  ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

The final showdown with P:Andora is here and the world is at stake. I am a sucker for a good inspiring speech and this one had one with the newest member of the team Imani. This new team could become a favorite one of mine, I love the group dynamics of them and Samson may be the best Superman analog I have seen yet. The ending has me looking forward to the next book. The art here is beautiful. Sergio Davila makes every page into a canvas invoking the epic feel of Alex Ross but using a more traditional style. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

MARVEL ACTION: AVENGERS #1
"The Iron Mechanic Part 2"
Written By: Matthew K. Manning
Art By: Jon Sommarvia
Colors By: Photobunker
Letters By: Christa Miesner
Cover By: Jon Sommarvia
Variant Covers By: Nelson Daniel
Price: $3.99

A.I.M. has control of Iron man and plans to use him to control their newest weapon, Fin Fang Foom. Meanwhile, the Avengers are hunting down clues to find Tony Stark. This book is fun! I love Marvel Action: Avengers, it is the Avengers book for me, I have all the heroes I want on the team, they all feel like the characters I know and love and it is not bogged down by events or anything else. I also have to hand it to Manning, this is the best Madame Masque I have seen in a long time with the spunk and sharp-tongued wit I love her, I want to see more of her. Sommarvia brings a fun animated feel to the story. And the Advance Iron Mechanic armor looks sick!  ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

AGE OF X-MEN: THE MARVELOUS X-MEN #1
Written By: Zac Thompson & Lonnie Nadler
Art By: Marco Failla
Colors By: Matt Milla
Letters By: VC's Joe Caramagna
Cover By: Phil Noto
Variant Covers By: Victor Hugo; Inhuyk Lee; Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Forteriz & Nolan Woodard
Price: $3.99

The world is perfect, or at least that is what Nate Grey wants everyone to believe. For the most part, this wasn't anything flashy, but it had its moments like with X-23 regaining her memories, Nature Girl asking about how people used to be born, and the end knowing that Apocalypse, Genesis, and Kitty are the resistance. The art here is nice, a simple style to feed the illusion of this Stepford Wives-esque world they are in.  ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

CHAMPIONS #2
Written By: Jim Zub
Art By: Steven Cummings
Colors By: Marcio Menyz With Erick Arciniega
Letters By: VC's Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Kim Jacinto & Rain Beredo
Variant Cover By: Pepe Larraz & David Curiel
Price: $3.99

The Champions have failed but can a deal with the devil make everything ok? Jim Zub is KILLING IT! I love the Champions ever since he took over and this is a perfect example of why. The emotional depth and intensity in this issue are palpable. The moment when Miles has to make the choice, and after stepping up as the leader is the best that MIles has been in years. Marvel hasn't had a long running ongoing teen team (Young Avengers never really went one too long) since the original X-Men to take on DC's Teen Titans and now they do in Champions and that is due to Jim Zub. The art here was nice with little hints planted early like the girl with the bracelets who we see die at the end, and it makes me wonder was the deal to swap lives?  ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

Daredevil #1 kicks off the newest volume of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen’s adventures with the storyline “Know Fear.”  In this issue we see Matt Murdock returning to life outside the hospital that he’s been in for weeks while recovering from getting hit by a truck, again. We see him suit up as Daredevil for the first time since the accident and Marco Checchetto art gives us great images of Daredevil traversing the rooftop of the gritty city with a deep perspective feel and conveys Daredevil’s feeling as he moves.  It feels like a daredevil book and that means a lot for us fans.   Chip Zdarsky does an awesome job walking us through who Daredevil is, from childhood to now and letting us know what still bothers Matt Murdock about his first accident.  This issue ends setting up what we have been waiting for since Kingpin took the office of Mayor several issues ago and now Kingpin knows Daredevil is back.  The next issue cannot get here fast enough! ~ Justin @ExileState
