DC ends Legion of Super Heroes and other 3 titles

$

0

Joining the other 22 cancelled titles of the New 52 comes Legion of Super-Heroes by Paul Levitz, Dial H by China Mieville, Demon Knights by Robert Venditti and Threshold by Keith Giffen.

The Cancellation of LSH leaves the Young Justice line with a single title on Teen Titans.
Dial H will have an extra-size final issue which coincides with the solicitation for its lastest volume which included issue 16 on the description. Threshold's writer Keith Giffen will still continue to write the new ongoing Larfleeze which started as a back-up of this same comic and ended being a backup just this month.

With all cancellations coming it leaves the New 52 at a poor 45, and the question on everybody's mind is: will they be replaced to go back to the magic number or will the cancellations continue?

Time will tell.

Invincible #102

Ok so some of you are going to be wondering why I am reviewing a two week old comic book (two weeks by the time this gets up). It is because Diamond screwed up my order. So for the next little while I may be reviewing older books sorry.

Anyways lets get on with the review. We Start off right after issue 101 were Nolan (Omni-Man) is getting in to a fight with the current leader of the Viltrum. He tells us how he had to put an end to the war that swarmed the planet and how he had to be strong for his people while he looked for the heir (being Nolan) He then betrays everyone so he could lead. We see Nolan take his place as the Viltrum King (which was really cool to see) Invincible (Mark) is now dealing with both a child and now coming to term with being a prince. At the end of this issue Mark and Eve are now set up to be married. With Eve getting down on one nee glad to see Image isn't all about gender roles.

Overall this is a good issue but not one of there best. The most I can say is I love how Eve is drawn in this issue. I really enjoyed the scene right before Nolan becomes King. Other then that there is really is no reason for me to tell any one who is reading this to pick it up. If you are a long time fan and have picked up every issue up till this point than I guess you might as well pick this up also. So yea this is getting a 3/5 from me. Like I said not that great of an issue, but could have been worse.

So this is me hoping I have something new to review next week, Thanks for reading.

Justice League of America issues #1-3 Review!

$

Hey guys, sorry it's been so long since I've done a review, what with being a grown up and all you find ourself busy and lacking time to do anything you actually want to anymore! But I am back being that summer is here and I have free time to do reviews and topic blogs! So this is a collective review for issues 1-3 of Justice League of America. Before this series came out I was very excited to read it because the cast of team members seemed so unlikely to get along. The captain is Colonel Trevor, in charge of Martian Manhunter, Katana, Hawkman, Stargirl, Vibe, Green Lantern (B'aaz), Green Arrow, and Catwoman. The premise of this team is to be the face value of protection for America. Although things aren't always what they appear to be when Amanda Waller is involved. Amanda made Steve form this team to keep the Justice League in check for the future, just in case they get out of hand, which Amanda is counting on. The main story that stretches through these 3 issues is the JLA's mission to infilitrate the Secret Society. We don't know much about this Secret Society but what we have seen is their android versions of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The JLA stops them but finds themselves digging deeper into the Secret Society's base.

My favorite thing about the writing in this series so far is the dynamics of the team. It's so interesting to see this makeshift team of "misfits" and see how they'll work together. More interestingly, each member actually plays an important part of the team. When I first heard that Catwoman was on the team I had mixed feelings about it. I was excited at first because she's one of my favorite characters but on the other hand I was like what's the necessity to have her on the team. After reading through these issues I totally understand why she's on it. One reason is her connection to Batman and another is her dimensionality as neither hero nor villain. Right now I think the story is pretty basic, it's establishing the roles of the characters. Basically, I'd say the writing is good and interesting so far. Notably, my favorite scene from the three issues is Vibe and Hawkman's encounter at the press conference. I'm not gonna spoil it but a lot of people find this scene hilarious as do I.

The art is also solid. The covers are pretty basic so far just showing the team, I think they'll get more sophisticated as the series progresses. The art on the inside is good but my only issue is how dark the black ink is. I feel like it kind of distracts the reader's attention from the over all art because how splotchy the black ink is.

Overall the first three issues are good and substantial. Don't expect anything insanely innovative from the series so far but it is definitely a fun read so far. I'd say pick them up and I give each of them a 4 out of 4.

Describing Your Friendships With TV Characters!

Along with comic book reviews, I thought it'd be fun to do topic blogs about things relavent in everybody's lives. In Alfred Hitchcock's words, these blogs would be considered "ice box talk". Recently me and two of my best friends discussed what tv show would describe our friendship perfectly. Meaning, what show had a group of characters that represented us. We talked about many shows from each of our likings and we agreed on none. Agreeing on nothing is our friendship because we always disagree on things. This led me to the conclusion that me and my two best friends are tv characters from 3 different shows. The three characters we came up with created the most random combination ever. Before I reveal who me and my friends chose, I just want to say one thing about friendships. No one friendship is alike. I almost 100% guarantee that no other group of friends will choose the same characters we did. This perfectly shows that every friendhsip is different. Take the challenge and try it with your best friends, are you all in agreeance of characters from just one show, or are you like my friends where we're all different characters from different shows. It's an interesting test to try! Ok so I chose Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City for myself, my friend Kathryn chose Alex Mack, and my other friend Alex chose Arnold from Hey Arnold!......I know.....we're weird.

Yet another high profile writer leaves DC comics.

James Robinson has been working on different projects from DC actively since 2005 when he wrote Batman and Detective Comics. As he says on his twitter, his departure from his most recent work on Earth 2 will also signify his departure from the company.

This is all very sudden since he had been commenting on podcasts and interviews about his future plans for the book even up to 2014.

X-O Manowar #13 Review
By: Jay

Our Story So Far

The Shanhara is being held in the Hall of Council as they send General Axil’s battalade to lay waste to the Human Slave Encampment. Aric is still healing from the previous issue when the battalade begins their attack. Vowing thatno more Visigoth will die, Aric summons Shanhara and takes on Axil’s men.

Robert Venditti really does a great job telling the story of a gladiator space adventure. Iron Manrecently tried to do this with the “The Godkiller” story arc, but failed. Venditti really gives us that setting, even by making Loam feel like Ancient Rome, a planet built by enslaving other races conquered by the Vine. The story is very character-driven while maintaining the action that the name of the series implies.

Venditti makes you feel for Aric, we feel his pain, and we are inspired by his spirit. The only fault I found with the story was the fight scene could have lasted at least two more pages. While Shanhara is a tremendous weapon, the previous issue had it taken down by a smaller army. Then in this issue Axil and his battalade are easily defeated within a few panels.

While the story is strong and solid, the art is sketchy and at times blurry. Cary Nord’s art is good, but I don’t think it does the story justice. Art and story should be a seamless unity, where the art grips you and brings you into story. Here the art kind of takes you out of the story. The alien faces seem to blur together at times making them nothing more than indistinguishable cannon fodder, even the ones that are playing key roles in the story don’t stand out.

The lack of detail kills the momentum of the story. You can really see how it hurts the book in two major scenes. The first one is when we see General Axil’s battalade storming the slave encampment. This could have been an epic scene showing the Vine troops storming the encampment. Instead, we got blurry generic alien robots and extremely blurry troops. The Vine has three sets of eyes and ant-like pinchers, yet the eyes look like cranial ridges and the pinchers are un-noticeable. The second scene is when Aric summons Shanhara and the armor is enveloping him in mid-air, but the scene loses its WOW moment because the armor looks like confetti. Both scenes should have been those moments that pumped you up, but the lack of detail just had me glossing over them.

I think this book could really thrive with a more detailed-oriented art style like a Steven McNiven, Tony S Daniel, or to go to the Iron Man“The Godkiller” arc artist Greg Land style. Nord is not a bad artist, but the art and the story should fit together, and with this book the art style hinders the story. I think Nord’s art would thrive in a crime drama type book.

I say pick up the book. While the art isn’t right for this book the story is strong enough to engage you and keep you interested. Now you know what I think about this book. Red Hood and The Outlaws #20 Review

$

Okay so first off DC next time you tell us to go read a comic book before reading the one we have already (in this case issue 19 of RHOL) make sure its out the week before or same week we I have the other comic I don’t think that’s asking too much.

Now then Red Hood and the Outlaws issue 20. So, last issue Roy and Starfire went out looking for Jason Todd (Red Hood) who has been M.I.A. after the events of Batman and Red Hood, because? Well because Batman that’s why. In this issue we find out that Jason wanted his mind swiped of all the bad things he has endured in his life. (which I guess means everything in Jason’s case).

When Roy and Starfire find him he doesn’t know who they are, hell he doesn’t even know his own name (talk about crazy stuff). Now I am tempted to leave it at that and give it a 5/5 but I would be lying if I did so. I don’t want to do that. All of that stuff does happen but after an argument between Roy and a ghost boy (I don’t think they even tell us his name). Which I can only imagine was to give us more insight with what happened to Jason. Which I found a little pissy mostly on the ghost boy’s part with him whining and moaning about how he doesn’t want to give Jason his memories back and making what seem to be a all of bull_______ reasons.

There really isn’t any thing that happens this issue is mostly just a big waste of time, but a fun waste of time un like Red Hood and The Outlaws issue 16 (and yes I am still going on about that issue). The story is mostly just weirdly lifeless. DC has this great set up and the only thing they really do with it is tell us that “Hey guys this is going some where.” Um gee thanks for telling us DC. How about you show us next time instead.

The only thing that really saves this issue from going in to the don’t waste your money pile is the fact that James Tynion IV isn’t afraid to have fun with it, also Green Arrow fans should be picking up not just this issue but also issue 20 I am not going to say why for that would spoil a huge part of the ending. So with all of that being said I am giving Red Hood and the Outlaws a 4/5 with the ending being a saving grace The only thing I am going to tell you about the ending to issue 20 is that any fan of the Arrow TV show or the Green Arrow comic books are going to want to pick this issue up along with the next issue which will be Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual #1. I mean I could give less of a crap about Green Arrow but even I am looking forward to this. With all this being said I think I can now say Diamond has gotten my stuff straightened out now, thank god.

I am CJ and I will see you next time.

Is There A Lack Of Female Identity In Marvel Comics Today?

$
0
0
Recently my friend brought to my attention that there haven't been many female focused series in Marvel comics right now. This led me to wonder, does Marvel comics view their female characters as less profitable than their male characters? When you think about it, it must be true. Take a look at their products for children. It's all about spider-man, hulk, captain america, and etc. Hell, Marvel's male characters define the "appropriate" gender identity for young boys today. Spider-man for boys, barbie for girls. Although, with todays ever-growing gray area known as gender identity, you'd think that they'd advertise more of their female characters for toys and pajamas and stuff. What's wrong with having Black Widow equally advertised as Spider-Man? This brings me back to Marvel's comics today. There has been a big spot light on Captain Marvel, but have all the other female characters just fallen to team titles? I feel that a lot of us want to see more female solo titles in marvel comics. Marvel has created some of the stronges female characters known, yet they're being confined to all these team books.
Marvel's movies exclude its female characters from the spotlight. In Marvel's phase 2, so far the female characters we have are Black Widow, Maria Hill, Pepper Pots, Gwen Stacey, and Jane from Thor. The only profitable ones are Black Widow and maybe Pepper. I'm starting to think the unblance between men and women is due to money and profit. Most things know no gender...but does money know gender?

Do Movie Sales Equal Comic Book Sales?

$
0

Comic book properties are really hot right now. New movies are being planned based off of characters from the “Big Two” publishers that are set to come out for the next five years and even beyond. The movie studios really want to cash in on the rise of popularity of this genre. But are the sales from blockbuster hits like Avengers and The Dark Knight Trilogy translating into comic sales for the companies that have been publishing the source material for more than half a century? My friend Kat from Comic Uno did a Topic Video over on Dark Avenger Inc on this subject and when trying to form a reply, I realized the 500 character limit of YouTube just wasn’t enough so I decided to write this in response to that video.

Comic book movies are considered a new thing to a lot of people, but they have been around for a long time, going back to the days of the serials of the ‘40s and ‘50s. People would go to the theater and watch the latest adventures of their comic book characters like Superman and Batman. Even back then the serials contributed to the comics with ideas and even in sales. Throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s comics made their way to the small screen on television. While the serials relied on the popularity of the science-fiction genre of the time, the TV shows used the sitcom format that emerged. Then in the ‘70s technology was finally able to make the world believe that a man can fly with Superman: The Movie. This new set of live-action comic book movies extended to the ‘80s, being dominated by DC Comics characters from the Superman and Batman franchises. With the ‘90s and '00s Marvel stepped into the game by selling the movie rights to their characters, such as Blade, X-Men and their flagship character Spider-Man. Today we have a brand new emergence that started with Iron Man. Marvel took the characters they still owned the rights to and started a shared universe under the Marvel Films banner. But does all of this really translate into comic book sales?

Like anything else, comic book sales have their ups and downs, and the success of movies and TV shows do play a part in the upsweeps. But there are other things to factor in also. The big comic boom of the ‘80s and ‘90s did affect the sales of comics, but at the same time comics were more accessible to the general public. During this period comics weren’t limited to comic book shops but were available in department, grocery, and convenience stores and even in pharmacies and newsstands. Parents could take their children to see Batman, and then while food shopping that week the child would see a Batman comic at the supermarket and beg their parent to get it for them. But due to the over-flooding of the market in the ‘90s and the increase in crime these stores weren’t making the money that made carrying comic books financially beneficial to either party and they stopped carrying them.

Comic books also have a bit of a stigma to them. While watching a movie like The Dark Knight Rises is considered OK, being seen reading a Batman comic book is looked at as juvenile. Let’s face it: as much as comics have gained mass appeal, it is still seen as a childish thing. Comics are to literature as Soap Operas are to TV. People read them and enjoy them but a lot will hide it and use family members like their children as the reason they have them. I think a lot of this stigma comes from things like the campy Adam West Batman. That also keeps the average movie viewer today from going to the Comic Book Shop and picking up an Avengers book after the movie.

I firmly believe if the companies put their products out there on a larger market like they did in the ‘80s and ‘90s they can get more sales for their tickets. We also have to look at how they're promoting their products. I remember going to see Batman Forever and at the movie theater receiving a free comic book. That was a great way to get people who weren’t into comic books into them. The books were free so they could say “they gave me this when I saw the movie,” and didn’t have to worry about people judging them.

I agree with what Kat said in her video about how even TV shows do bring in a few new readers, but not enough. Not all of them are really representing comic books on the screen. Sure the animated shows do an excellent job at this, but their target audiences are usually little kids who don’t have access or knowledge of the comics. For the adult demographics the companies give us live-action dramas. The shows tend to hide their comic book connections. Let’s take Arrow as an example: while the show tells really good stories, and uses comic book characters, it really does a bad job at cross promotion. Oliver Queen is there but he isn’t known as Green Arrow, or even Arrow within the show, but the “Vigilante” or the “Hood.” Someone in that 18-24 demographic who doesn’t know comic books will have no idea who this is.

This can also be seen on the big screen to a lesser degree, and more so with the DC properties. Where Marvel has embraced the unique world their characters live in within the pages of their books on screen, DC tends to try to mask them by making them gritty and “realistic.” We can take one example from each company. DC did very well with their Dark Knight Trilogy, that is undeniable but look at it as a whole. Aside from the first movie Batman Begins, none of them showcase the brand label of Batman, and now the newest Superman movie doesn’t say Superman on it at all, just Man of Steel. Now on the Marvel end of the spectrum we have Iron Man which like Batman is easy to fit into the real world, it doesn’t hide the fact that it is a comic book movie, even using the very colorful “Iron Patriot” armor that looks like it came right out of the pages of the comics. This can be seen throughout the Marvel owned movies. We can go even further and say how they planned their movies. Marvel took a big risk by deciding from the start to build a shared universe leading to the Avengers (and it paid off) while DC is playing it safer and seeing how Man of Steel does in the box office before committing to forming their own shared universe.

Comics in other mediums can help boost sales, but it has to start with the marketing. People who aren’t into comics didn’t know that Watchmen were a comic first. These companies have 90-120 minutes and beyond of what can be essentially used as a commercial for their products, but they can’t rely just on that. In my opinion if they start bringing comics back into other retail venues like supermarkets and newsstands again. I think if companies did that then theater sales will seriously boost comic book sales. You don’t believe me? Look at franchises like Twilight where book sales went up as did all related merchandise because it was easily accessible to the people who saw the movies in the theaters. If they get a little bit of it from those retailers and enjoy it, they will seek out the comic book shops in their areas for more.

That is how I feel about this subject. Now you can go to Dark Avenger Inc and see what Comic Uno has to say about this subject, then leave a comment for her there and let us know what you think in our comments. Also follow us on Twitter to know whenever we post more reviews, news and previews on Comic Frontline.

“It's a great mix of fantasy, action, horror and humor,” says writer Patrick Shand. “It's a blast to take these characters out of their separate titles and allow them to come together against common threats while also trying to get along with one other. For Grimm Fairy Tales fans, the elements will be familiar but also feel fresh and different.”

The first issue of Realm Knights, which is set to be released in print and digitally in August, is now available for pre-order in Diamond’s June 2013 edition of Previews. Realm Knights #1 will feature covers by Anthony Spay, Marat Mychaels, Alfredo Reyes and will also include a unique “suiting up” connecting cover by Anthony Spay that will spread across all four issues of the first mini-series.

Zenescope, along with Realm Knights writer Patrick Shand, will be at Phoenix ComiCon at booth #973. Check out their Phoenix ComiCon Schedule for Memorial Day Weekend May 23rd –26th. Also look out for them at Wizard World Philly May 30th - June 2nd.

Man of Steel Prequel Review
By: Jay

Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel movie is almost here and the promotion machine is in full effect with theater trailers, TV spots, toys and other related merchandise all coming at us everyday. Now DC has released an official Man of Steel Prequel Comic! This comic is a Walmart exclusive download that comes with the advance screening tickets.

We are at the beginning of “Krypton’s Great Age of Expansion” where thousands of scout ships are about to set out to terraform other planets. Kara Zor-El earns her place as a Captain on one of the ships. Something happens during her cryo-sleep that sends her ship crashing to Earth.

This book is as official as it gets. The story is by Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer, and Director Zack Snyder along with Geoff Johns. The script is by Sterling Gates and art is by Jerry Ordway. This is a 40-page comic that you get for a free download with the advance screening tickets, so the tickets are really worth it.

The story mainly focuses on Krypton’s past, but there is no mention of Zod or Jor-El in this issue. Instead this book focuses on Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El. Unlike the comics Kara wasn’t sent away to watch over her infant cousin Kal-El. In the Man of Steel Krypton seems to be divided into guilds, an idea that Geoff Johns used during his run on the Superman books pre-New 52. Kara is a member of the Explorer Guild, and is a part of a group of six candidates that are vying for four spots on an exploration crew. Kara’s group includes some familiar names like Dev-Em, Nam-Ek, and Thara, while also exploring Kara’s personal life on Krypton with her boyfriend Kell-Ur. And what exploration team would be complete without someone named Dora?

The story is pretty solid, but without seeing the movie yet, I am unsure how it all fits in to the overall story of Man of Steel. The story does set up a few things, like the reason why a Phantom Zone would be needed, and the fact that there is a division among the Kryptonian people on how things should be. How much of this will effect the movie? We don’t know, but if they are sticking to some of the classic themes of the Superman mythos, then you can see where these events will lead. I also really like this new take on Kara’s origins and I'm looking forward to seeing if she plays into the movie at all. We also get clues that Man of Steel is set in the larger DCU by mentioning the Thanagarians.

Ordway’s art in this book shows a beautiful Krypton and overall is really well done. I have only one slight issue, and that is the stylistic changes. When we see characters from the movie like Jonathan Kent in the beginning and Clark at the end the art is almost photo-realistic, while the rest of the art in the book is more traditional comic book style. The art is not bad at all. I just would have preferred a more cohesive look, either one or the other. There is also a little gem near the end of the book in a tent painting of Kara’s ship that resembles the classic cover of Action Comics #1.

The book succeeded in getting me more pumped up for the movie, so DC really did what a book like this is supposed to do. Right now I am really curious as to what, if any, role does Kara play in the movie? Are they planning a Supergirl movie already? Will any of these characters be featured in the movie? This is what a prequel comic for a movie should do, get the reader asking these types of questions, and wanting to see how events from it play out in the movie. I hope DC releases this in another form, perhaps for those who go see the movie, they will get a code for a free download of this book as well, or even giveaway a printed version of this book at the theaters.

That is what I think about this book. Let us know what you think about the book, or about what you want to see in the Man of Steel in the comments. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter to know whenever we post more reviews, news and previews on Comic Frontline.

Based on the popular comic written by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert. Flashpoint is about how Reverse-Flash goes into the past and ruins Barry Allen's life. Barry tries to fix this and creates a new broken timeline, where Amazons and Atlanteans are in constant war. Aquaman threatens to drown the world and Flash needs the help of a different kind of Batman to turn things back to normal.

We Are All Actors

Hey guys this is Kat "Comic Uno". I made a story for my creative writing class and think it came out pretty well. So, I decided to share it on Comic Frontline. Please give me feedback on what to change and what you like about the story. Thank you!

“We are all actors just playing our parts. Going crazy is just having a wide imagination. I am just playing my part in the grand scheme of things. I am only here to entertain.”

They say that he killed dozens. He is a psychotic serial killer. I don’t remember the medical term they told me in the past. The simple definition is that he can’t feel for others and he has no remorse for his crimes. To me he is just my little brother.
I was able to leave my kids with my husband. I wanted to see my little brother for the last time. I walk into Bellevue Hospital. The sign I see while driving “Bellevue Hospital- A Hospital for the Criminally Insane”. Before I know it I am walking the hallway to my brother’s fully padded room. The walk seems longer than usual. Maybe because I realize that this will be the last time I will be able to see my brother before he is given the death sentence.
I never thought my brother would ever end up in a place like this. He never showed any signs of evil. There were no signs that he would kill dozens of innocent people. He was just my little brother that I always was too overprotective with.
Growing up he didn’t have many friends. He always wanted to sit in the corner and read his books. I still thought we were close. He would always talk to me like he cared. The doctor says that psychopaths are the best actors. I just can’t accept that our relationship was a lie.
I go up to the front desk and I show my identification. They let me in. I thought I would be able to see him in his room, but the nurse leads me into a different room. My brother is now set in an interrogation room. This will be the last place that he will have a conversation with someone. That last person will be me.
I drag a metal chair to the table. It screeches the ground and leaves black scuffmarks on the perfectly white floor. I see his face, and see two different things. My brother is in their somewhere, but what shows from his lack of facial expression is the killer I don’t want to know.
I hear the chains of his cuffs coming lose. The guards seem to be ignoring the problem.

My brother asks me, “Why did you come here?”
I tell him, “I care about you, and I don’t think you did those crimes. I promise I am going to try and clear your name.”
He says, “It’s too late. You can’t change what has been done. I am only an actor in the grand scheme of things. The actor accomplished the final act that everyone wanted to see, but was too scared to admit it.”
I cry to him, “You must have been forced. My little brother would never harm a fly. Who made you do this?”
My brother smirks, “You don’t quite understand. I had no motive and nobody forces me to do anything. I make my own decisions. Nothing is painted in black and white. I am gray.”

My brother breaks out of his chains and he starts to strangle me. Everything starts to go black. I am wondering why the guards are not trying to prevent this. Are they entertained? The last thought I have was they are just actors playing their part….
….I wake up in a white padded room.
The guard tells me that my brother is here to see me. I realize that my imagination has gotten the best of me once again. That is how I ended up here in the first place. I put on a fake smile, which I know how to do so well. I have been practicing it for years. It makes me seem like a real person of society that can play well with others.
My brother, wearing a perfectly crisp business suit, moves a metal chair to the table. It screeches the ground and leaves black scuffmarks on the perfectly white floor. He looks at my face and I wear the same fake smile I have been wearing for years.
He starts to talk to me, but I don’t hear a word. It seems like he cares. I wish I could return the favor, but I never cared about him. He should take my place. Why does he deserve to have the perfect job with the perfect family? Is this how life works? This doesn’t fit the grand scheme of things. My cuffs start to come lose.
I ignore what my brother says, but one thing sticks with me.

He says, “I always wanted to care for you sis. Even tried getting you help over the years, but I do believe you did this. I don’t understand why you do these things. Did this give you pleasure? I so sorry it had to be this way.”

I tell him with the straightest face, “I want to tell you why I do the things I do, but you wouldn’t understand. No one understands.”

The last thing I say is, “We are all actors just playing our parts. Going crazy is just having a wide imagination. I am just playing my part in the grand scheme of things. I am only here to entertain”

My brother looks confused and replies, “This is not some sort of game. You always thought life was a game, but life is precious. Can’t you see that now?”

I saw the tears in his eyes. I pity how naive he is.

The guards pull me away. I know my destiny, and for the next few hours the law pulls my strings. I become a puppet to society.

Scarlet Spider issue 17

This week I thought just for kicks I would pick up Scarlet Spider issue 17 and holy crap was it good. I mean after the 1990’s and a story arc that won’t be named right now I looked at this and thought “why the hell would I pick this up?

However, guys this is worth picking up. Holy crap was this thing good I may also be saying that because Wolverine is in this issue along with all the other X-Men.

Scarlet Spider’s suit has under gone some changes. He now has a black suit (no not Venom). This suit actually has neon lights (think Tron but with Spider-man). His suit is also equipped with stingers that come out of his wrist, which is a cool addition to the costume (beat that Parker).

Some thing you will need to know, issue 17 is the start of the “Wrath” story arc.  So, this would be the time for you to jump onto this series. In this story it seems as though the Scarlet Spider is under the thumb of a Miss.Belldonna (what happened before I don’t know because again this is the first issue I have ever read). After a long talk between the two Scarlet goes off to kill Wolverine! Yeah I know right see doesn’t this sound good? So at this point I was pretty much all in.

We get to see all and I mean all of the X-Men. There were ones that I had never even seen before and Marvel went out of the way to make them seem like they had always been there. After our little walk around the school, Scarlet and Wolverine have there “big” (I say it like that because chances are they will have an other one) …. and I am not going to tell you what happens next your just going to have to read it your self.

This issue clearly shows why Marvel is doing so well and is at the top of their game. Over all I give this a 5/5. People shouldn’t go and pick this up they NEED to.

See yea next time

The Self-Destruction of the New 52

-By Arnoldo Acosta
“I’m not surprised. From where I am – I have no interest in comics any more. The entire world of comics seems to me, from what I’m reading in the proper newspapers over here, on the point of collapse. It seems that both of the major companies are going through some rather frantic thrashings as they try to retool their kind of flagging cosmoses by pulling the usual tricks, because, really, I don’t expect them to have any new ones…
…So I guess we can expect a lot of revisions and overhauls and reboots from the companies that portend to represent the dying gurgles of the industry, and to a degree it’s its own fault. As you know, if what you say about DC is right and they’re doing these regressive moves back to a time when they still sold more comics, presumably, then, you know, it would seem that’s kind of predictable, because it seems to me comics have kind of gotten themselves in a position where they cannot imagine a future, and are endlessly trying to retreat back to a past where they felt more comfortable.”
-          Alan Moore after hearing of the New 52
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3Part 4

Before I move into the conclusion there is one aspect of the New 52 that I needed to cover and that is:

The 5-Year Timeline

The 5-Year timeline basically starts with Justice League#1-#6 which tells the story of how the Justice League came together then there is a time jump 5 years into the present. This establishes the beginning of the “Hero Era”.

I feel like I have presented a pretty good analysis of every problem in the New 52 but in this case I feel like I cannot deeply analyze.
The 5-Year timeline is simply STUPID, and dumb, and stupid and it makes no sense…
…I will elaborate.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM

The timeline itself is not actually a timeline, it is just a timeframe of 5 years that starts at one point and ends on another. What happens inside that timeframe is completely unknown.

The purpose of this is so that titles like Batman and Green Lantern can keep a certain sense of continuity. Since those books weren’t rebooted too much, those old adventures would take place inside that timeframe. EXCEPT that for Batman the continuity doesn’t fit and I don’t even need to begin to explain why it doesn’t. It doesn’t solve any continuity problems and instead it creates them just by it sole existence (I.E. Damian Wayne being ten years old on a 6-7 year timeline).

What about other cases like Wonder Woman which was rebooted completely? On one point, she just arrives to America and joins the Justice League and on the other end we have the beginning of Azzarello’s story. What happened in the middle? The answer is nothing that had been shown or can be shown.
That is pretty much the problem with this. IT SERVES NOBODY.  People who are interested in continuity don’t like it. This is because nothing is explained and those things that are explained are full of holes; and the people who don’t care about continuity just don’t care. It is the ultimate lose-lose situation.
DC just cannot have a timeframe that is completely empty. In the past DC has attempted to create these kind of timelines on their previous revamps/reboots like during Zero Hour.

These things are only supposed to be guidelines, but without a careful thought out plan things could then easily fall apart. We should have never been presented with a timeline if DC cannot tell us what happens inside the timeline.

What DC should have done was just mark the start of the Justice League as “several years ago” without actually being specific about it because they don’t have to be specific about it.

CONCLUSIONS

One of the comments I heard while I was doing this feature was “as long as the content is good, do any of those complaints matter?” and it is a very good comment. As long as the content is good and people like it why does any of those problems matter?

It is not like the problems I mentioned didn’t exist before this. Titles were cancelled and new series failed before the New 52 and creative teams had editorial problems. Continuity problems are not isolated to just the New 52. When DC relaunched its line almost 30 years ago with Crisis on Infinite Earth it brought a ton of problems with it, that didn’t get fixed until years or even decades later: like Byrne removing Superboy from the Legion of Superheroes, Donna Troy being part of the Titans while Wonder Woman was just starting her career or, the multiple origins of Hawkman, etc.

Finally while there are some rotten apples with the New 52 there are also a lot of enjoyable titles people can enjoy.

All of those are valid points, except there were also good and enjoyable titles before the New 52. The problems with writers and artists are small in comparison with the New 52.

The New 52 has continuity problems that are inexcusable. The biggest concern of mine is not that the New 52 is creating these problems, but that it should be doing the opposite. The New 52 was supposed to be the cure. It is not solving anything and it is making those things worse.

While I’m writing this conclusion another four titles got cancelled and one more high profile writer has left the company, as James Robinson leaves Earth Two, after talking about his plans on the book for 2014.

As for the cancelled titles, Dial H, Demon Knights, Threshold and Legion of Superheroes are another four failures of the New 52. As niche books start to disappear from the line up they are just replaced by other niche books. They fail to perform for exactly the same reasons as their predecessors, none which might be about quality. If their replacements aren’t niche books then they are replaced by books with characters like Batman, Superman or Green Lantern diluting that “genre diversity” that was promised more and more.

This inevitably creates a cancellation culture where readers know beforehand which titles have a chance of survival and which ones don’t. Because perception affects reality their thought of a title not surviving for long makes them avoid that title, which in turn collaborates on such title to be cancelled. This creates a cycle and a toxic environment in which titles regardless of their quality or concept just cannot survive.

SUGGESTIONS

It was very easy for me to talk about the shortcomings of the New 52 but it is not as easy to present a solution to correct such problems.

Most of the issues start at the top of DC’s management but that doesn’t mean that there is an easy fix  by replacing the higher ups or adopting other policies. I do not believe there is an easy fix.
However here is a list of humble suggestions to DC.

  • ·         Know your Limits. The 52 is pointless, DC doesn’t need to have 52 titles at the same time all the time. It creates an unreachable goal that DC just cannot maintain and doesn’t make any important significance anyways. End this “52“era and start a new one not tied to a fix numerical lucky charm Also stop using “Waves”. Not all titles should be cancelled at the same time or start at the same time. Once again, it serves no purpose and has no effect on sales. Some good titles that are cancelled deserve an opportunity to a decent conclusion while others don’t really deserve extra issues.
  • ·         Know your Past. Because the 5-year-timeline is stupid, stupid, STUPID. Continuity is DC’s best resource, the people that fall in love with continuity will go back and read DC’s past books not just its future books. That’s how you create new readers! You make them fall in love with your history. Create a coherent timeline that makes sense and makes people want to read those great masterpieces of the past.
  • ·         Know what you want for your Future. Rethinking a situation, a character, or a plot can be convenient and necessary but it shouldn’t be abused. Constant rewrites just give the impression of insecurity to the reader and never ends well.
  • ·         Know your Characters. DC has one of the best libraries of characters in the world. The most important characters have survived for decades and for reasons that DC seems to have forgotten.
  • ·         Know your Talent. DC is a top comic book company! It should have the best possible team of writers, editors, and artists for every single book that it produces without exception. Stop treating writers and artists as exchangeable parts because they are not, just choose the right people for the right projects.
  • ·         Know your Fans. DC’s public relations department SUCKS. Try to find better ways to connect with your fans, and if something bad happens, try to capitalize on it, don’t just let us know that a writer left a book because of their twitter feed.
  • ·        Know what DCis

…Don’t Change for Change’s sake.

Because that is what most haters of the New 52 are complaining about.
The comic book industry wasn’t in a good place before the New 52, something had to be done but the New 52 was just a momentary fix, a band-aid over a broken leg.

Most of the strategies that DC implemented could have worked for a longer term but there were so many things that were changed without a justification.

Not to say that change is wrong, change is an inevitable part of all things and DC is no exception. However change needs a reason beyond low sales. The redesigns, the change of characters, the changes of continuity, the change of artists and writers… it is just too much.

Change is by its own nature painful. DC changed so much that it is now screaming on angst and it became something unrecognizable for many fans.

That is ultimately the reason why so many people are not accepting The New 52.
It is been almost two years since the New 52 started. It isn’t New anymore, it isn’t 52anymore and it was not the solution that was meant to save DC.

But it doesn’t mean that DC can’t be saved.

The End
