Top 5 Panels Of The Week - 4/10/19

Welcome Comic Frontline's Top 5 Panels! This is where the Frontline Six unite to pick their Top 5 comic panels from the week, and then you guys get to vote below which panel was your favorite. In next week's post, we will announce the winner from the poll.

Fan Panel Pick From Last Week - Young Justice #4 - Group Hug

KAT

Honorable Mention - Bettie Page #3 - The Betties Kick Ass

There were some great action sequences in this issue, and I loved the spunk that we got with this epic team up between Bettie Page and Queen Elizabeth.

5. The Unstoppable Wasp #6 - “I’m Gay and I’m Dating An Assassin”

I love Janet just being a mom. haha

4. Incredibles 2: Secret Identities #1 - I’m Like You

The secret identity reveal is one of my favorite comic book tropes. I like that Violet has found someone else with powers that's her age, even if this may bring some trouble to her doorstep.

3. The Unstoppable Wasp #6 - Mama Wasp

I love that Janet uses her second super power of fashion to help Ying out. Once again, I'm really enjoying Janet being the surrogate mom to these kids.

2. Batman #68 - We Are Friends, Aren’t We?

Lois learning a thing or two from Catwoman. I'm really enjoying this budding friendship. I hope we get to see more of them in the future.

1. The Unstoppable Wasp #6 - Be Yourself

I loved how Ying stood up for her girlfriend, and how they like each other just for being themselves.

CHRIS

5. Detective Comics #1001 - The Arkham Knight

4. Ghostbusters 35th Anniversary - The Real Ghostbusters #1 - Petey Doesn't Like Cuddles

3. Wonder Twins #3 - The Greatest Power

2.  Symbiote Spider-Man #1 - Never Forget

1.  Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5 - No More One More Day

No we wouldn't want to do that Pete.

JAY

Honorable Mention - Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5 - Blair @#$% Rimington!

This is why I love Tom Taylor's Spider-Man, even though this is one of the most profound moments in his life Peter still makes a dad joke that makes you laugh.

5. Avengers: No Road Home #9 - ...He Only Helps

I NEED this Hercules more in comics right now! Please, Marvel, bring this team together more than once a year.

4. Batman #68 - Batman's Worst Nightmare!

Tom King is a KING! I loved this issue, but this part right here has me wanting him to write a Superman/Batman ongoing! I love how he gets the biggest difference between these two.

3. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5 - In Danger...

Unless you had that moment you have no idea how powerful this panel is.

2. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5 - Your Son

Tom Taylor had me worried that Peter wasn't going to be there for Aunt May, but having him show up and not just showing up but being called her son made it right. Now, where are her other sons, Ben and Kaine? I hope Taylor doesn't forget about them in this story.

1. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5 - Where Else Would I Be?

I said it in my Review Of This Issue Tom Taylor has a real honesty when it comes to Aunt May having cancer and if you been there you know he hits all those emotional beats, maybe a little too close to reality.

MIKE SPIDER-SLAYER

5. Symbiote Spider-Man #1 - Your Fly is Open

This one scene had me laughing for about 5 minutes. I mean I was crying. Peter David wrote Peter Parker very well in this issue.

4. X-23 #11 - Gabby Vs. Laura

The fight between Laura and Gabby was so heart breaking. This Issue really pulled at the heart strings.

3. X-23 #11 - You're Gone

Didn’t I say this issue was heartbreaking! Now that Gabby has left how does Laura even begin to deal with life without her?

2. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5 - No More One More Day

I really liked how Dr. Strange shot the idea down right from the start that there are forces that should be left undone when it came to Aunt May’s Cancer. THANK YOU TOM TAYLOR FOR NO MEPHISTO!

1. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5 - Where Else Would I Be?

This was a wonderful scene as Peter shows up for Aunt May’s first round of chemotherapy, after he was too scared to face that he could loose the closest person to him. Very touching moment, good luck Aunt May the fans love you!!

BLOSSOM 666 #3
Written By: Cullen Bunn
Art By: Laura Braga
Letters By: Jack Morelli
Colors By: Matt Herms
Main Cover By: Laura Braga
Variant Covers By: Marguerite Sauvage & Matthew Taylor
Price: $3.99

There is a third Blossom in the running to be the Anti-Christ and he has his eyes set on Betty. I love the twists and turns this darker more sinister Archie tale keeps on taking. Finding out that the Blossoms are triplets and not twins with Julian was really cool and he brings in that total unknown factor. Julian was raised by this cult so we know nothing about him, but he does seem to be a Blossom through and through. Bunn is doing a bang up job on this book, I never found the Blossoms more intriguing or engaging as I do in this mini. Braga and Herms make quite the duo with Braga's art being so expressive that the sinister just seeps off the page while Herms colors really bring the art and story together with the right mood setting for every panel and the Blossom's hair just pops making you notice them even more. Overall, I recommend this to everyone, but especially the Riverdale fans. Can we get Bunn to write some on the show and bring Julian with him? ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

*NOTE Read Buffy The Vampire Slayer #4 before reading Angel #0.

ANGEL #0
Written By: Bryan Edward Hill
Art By: Gleb Melnikov
Colors By: Gabriel Cassata
Letters By: Ed Dukeshire
Price: $3.99

Angel is in the city of Angels paying for his past sins, but when the cost gets too high he leaves town and heads to Sunnydale. Ok, this is a mix book for me, it starts off with the ending of Buffy The Vampire Slayer #4 showing Angel's debut, which makes you believe it will continue from there, but it does a fake out and goes into a flashback. The flashback isn't to Angel's past as Angelus (which we do get some of) but it is of what lead him to Sunnydale at the end of Buffy #4. I loved hearing Angel's voice through the inner monologue, not sure if I felt it was the same as the show's yet, but it did get me looking forward to continuing the series to see where it goes. I think BOOM! knows their stuff by grabbing Power Rangers' artists to join these books, they bring something familiar to the characters that draw the old fans in. Overall, the fake out in the opening did leave me a bit disappointed as I wanted to see Angel in action in Sunnydale, but the story did a great job setting up the tortured soul. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #4
Created By: Joss Whedon
Written By: Jordie Bellaire
Art By: Dan Mora
Colors By: Raúl Angulo
Letters By: Ed Dukeshire
Main Cover By: Matthew Taylor
Variant Covers By: Various Artists
Price: $3.99

Buffy and the Scooby Gang have the night off and one gets more than expected. I am really digging this Buffy reboot! We have all the same characters who still overall feel the same but they get more development and depth, which surprises me because these are some of the most fleshed out characters around. The stories are so fresh, like this one with Xander being catfished by Spike and Dru, and being enthralled by her as she seduces him and I hope she doesn't turn him, but this is all new territory so anything can happen. Mora is the only artist I can see doing this book! He brings something magical to these characters it fully encompasses what this book is a mixture of the old with the new by bringing both the actor's likenesses to the book while bringing something truly new to them. Overall I am really enjoying this book and each issue brings me back to that point when this show ruled my TV, and now it rules my comics. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 5 Stars

BATMAN #69
"Knightmares Finale: The Last Dance"
Written By: Tom King
Art By: Yanick Paquette
Colors By: Nathan Fairbairn
Letters By: Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Yanick Paquette & Nathan Fairbairn
Variant Cover By: Francesco Mattina
Price: $3.99

The finale of Knightmares is here and Bruce must face his greatest fear to break through. Meanwhile, Thomas Wayne and Bane spar. I have been enjoying Knightmares, and the one thing I saw was Catwoman reappearing and I like how this issue ties it all into Bruce trying to break free connecting the answer to the way to break out. I hope the answer doesn't mean he won't fight for Selina later on, but man, before he gets there he has one hell of a fight coming up. Thomas Wayne is INSANE! The fight with Bane was eye-opening into what is to come and the psyche of both men. The art here is outstanding! Paquette does a great job choreographing these two dances one on the dance floor of Gotham with Bat and Cat and one on the matt with Bane and Thomas, beautiful! Overall, this arc was a nice breather, because this issue lets us know what to come could truly break the bat, and I can't wait! ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¾ Stars

TEEN TITANS #29
"The Terminus Agenda" Part Three 'Who Are You?'"
Written By: Adam Glass
Pencils By: Bernard Chang
Colors By: Marcelo Maiolo
Letters By: Andworld Design
Cover By: Carlo Pagulayan, Jason Paz & Ivan Plascencia
Variant Cover By: Mico Suayan & Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Price: $3.99

Robin, Red Arrow, and Kid Flash all face big choices, meanwhile, Crush tells Djinn how she feels about her. I have been enjoying this latest run of Teen Titans, Glass shows us in this issue how gets not just team dynamics but teen dynamics as well, every member had moments here, we have several side plots with development and some foreshadowing. I really enjoy how real they seem, especially Roundhouse's reaction to Crush's sexuality was dealt with perfectly, as was Djinn's reaction. Chang does a great job of keeping the kids looking like kids and not short adults, and his paneling is great. Overall, this issue was a nice set up for the finale with a cliffhanger that sets up for one hell of a finale to the Terminus Agenda. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

NAOMI #3
Written By: Brian Michael Bendis & David Walker
Art By: Jamal Campbell
Letters By: Wes Abbott
Cover By: Jamal Campbell
Price: $3.99

Naomi learns about how her father came to Earth, met her mother and how they came to adopt her. Naomi is really a diamond in the rough for DC right now, it isn't a huge book, no Bat, Super, Wonder, Lantern or any of those in it, but it is a very consistent solid book. This issue focuses on the very cosmic level origins of Naomi and her parents but does so in a very grounded human level. The mystery of this series keeps me engaged and guessing at what is coming next. Campbell is at the top of his game with art, it makes you feel like you are watching a movie or a TV series, which adds more layers to the entertainment factor. Overall, if you're not reading this book, give it a shot! ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¾ Stars

XENA WARRIOR PRINCESS #1
Written By: Vita Ayala
Art By: Olympia Sweetman
Colors By: Rebecca Nalty
Letters By: Ariana Maher
Cover By: David Mack
Variant Covers By: Various Artists
Price: $3.99

Xena and Gabriel must help save the children of a small town from the Goddess Discord. Ayala writes a great episode of Xena Warrior Princess, it felt like I was watching an old episode, familiar, yet new. Ayala also knows the core fans playing up the insinuated romantic relationship between the two. Things like that and the opening theme song voice over at the beginning of the issue really help set the mood and made for a nice issue. The art by Sweetman was great, but I think it needs to capture more of Lucy Lawless and of Xena. Overall this is a nice start to a new Zena series. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¼ Stars

STAR TREK: THE Q CONFLICT #3
Written By: Scott Tipton & David Tipton
Pencils By: David Messina
Inks By: Elisabetta D'Amico
Colors By: Alexandra Alexakis
Letters By: Neil Uyetake
Cover A & B By: David Messina
Retailer Incentive Cover By: George Caltsoudas
Price By: $3.99

The teams get some coaching before they enter the second round. This is the crossover I always wanted, and with the ending with the Prophets coming, oh yeah it is getting even better! The characters are written so perfectly that when Sisko was talking to Ayelborne I could hear Avery Brooks' voice clearly. My only problem is the Omnipotent being used here, we have three from TOS and just Q to represent the rest of the series, and of course the lack of Star Trek Enterprise representation. I am glad the Prophets are joining but I would also like to see Susperia from Voyager show up as well. The art is great with the crew, but lacks actor likeness with others like Q. Overall this is another score from IDW and it is a shame I can't watch this on TV or in a theater. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

AVENGERS: NO ROAD HOME #10 (OF 10)
Written By: Mark Waid, Al Ewing, & Jim Zub
Art By Sean Izaakse
Colors By: Marcio Menyz With Erick Arciniega
Letters By: VC's Joe Sabino
Cover By: Yasmine Putri
Variant Covers By: Matteo Scalera & Moreno Dinisio
Price: $3.99

The final battle with Nyx is here and Vision must face her alone. I have been loving this event, but honestly, this was a letdown for a finale. Nyx was so hardcore and took out the entire Greek Pantheon and then a little quick battle with "Visions" defeat her? But I did like some of the character moments here but not sure about what is to come with the Olympian Gods. The art team does a great job here, especially when the "Visions" come to help Vision. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 Stars

DAREDEVIL #4
Written By: Chip Zdarsky
Art By: Marco Checchetto
Colors By: Sunny Gho
Letters By: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Julian Totino Tedesco
Variant Cover By: John Romita Jr. and Richard Isanove
Price: 3.99

Daredevil #4 Know Fear Part 4, shifts gears to a solid Daredevil and Punisher encounter.  Encounter being the operative word here, it’s no team up this time.   The Punisher having heard the news that Daredevil killed someone has been stalking Matt to see if it’s true.  Hoping that it is and he will join the Punisher’s war.  Of course, Daredevil says it not true and even talks the Punisher into letting a prisoner so, for a second anyway.   This leads to a fight between the two and Daredevil coming out on the winning side, but also letting himself realize the truth about the murder he’s accused of. Chip Zdarsky does a great job with the dialogue here while keeping the story on track and moving toward the Kingpin. Marco Checchetto gives this issue an awesome feel and that last page needs to be made into a poster fast. ~ Justin @ExileState
Verdict: 4 Stars

THE MAGNIFICIENT MS. MARVEL #2
Written By: Saladin Ahmed
Art By: Minkyu Jung
Colors By: Ian Herring
Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Price: $3.99

Kamala’s parents are literally melting in her hands, and it’s up to Bruno and Ms. Marvel to get to the bottom of this devastating discovery. Even with this emotional thread, The Magnificent Ms. Marvel hasn’t been able to pull on the same heartstrings as G. Willow Wilson’s run. This alien story arc delivers a fresh take on the character but sacrifices the grounded storytelling that made most of us fall in love with Ms. Marvel. This issue makes some improvements in delving into her supporting cast with the return of Josh, even if he felt a bit out of character with his almost mustache twirling introduction, but it was nice to see what he has been up to. Minkyu Jung’s interiors are, thankfully, stronger than Eduard Petrovich’s cover art, which may deter some people from reading with the drastic art change from the original series. The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #2 shines the most with Bruno and Kamala’s classic dynamic but still hasn’t reached the heights of the original series. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 3 ½ Stars

MEET THE SKRULLS #3
"Family Unit Part 3"
Written By: Robbie Thompson
Art By: Niko Henrichon
Colors By: Laurent Grossat
Letters By: V.C.'s Travis Lanham
Cover By: Marcos Martin
Variant Cover By: Rahzzah
Price: $3.99

The Warners each carry out their mission while facing ghosts of the past. Meanwhile, Alice is home facing the man killing Skrull operatives. This issue really hits on so many levels! Since the first issue, we saw that this was a family still grieving over the death of Ivy, the youngest member of the family, and here we get to see flashbacks of her. This family is so messed up and now we start to see why Ivy was so important to them and losing her really tore them apart which happens too often in the event of a death. I still feel extremely bad for Alice though, who is still struggling to earn their love, and I don't know if her father knew she was about to be attacked or not, which is why I love this book so much. The art here is great, Henrichon captured a classic heist film feel perfect, I felt like I was in a classic movie. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¾ Stars

SPIDER-MAN LIFE-STORY #2
Written By: Chip ZDarsky
Art By: Mark Bagley
Colors By: Frank D’Armata
Letters By: VC’s Travis Lanham
Price: $4.99

Spider-Man Life Story #2 really delivers as it warps Spidey’s history as the world is still reeling from Marvel’s version of the Vietnam War. Peter has the perfect life - a good job, the perfect wife with Gwen Stacy, but everything turns upside down as Peter learns the truth behind his perfect life. Chip ZDarsky plays with classic Spidey storytelling and puts it on its head to deliver shock value to even the biggest Spider-Man fans. I especially loved Zdarsky’s characterization for the MJ, Gwen, Peter love triangle. He delivers some powerful scenes between these three, but especially MJ and Peter. It shows, even if they aren’t romantically involved, they still have this unbreakable bond. They get each other like no other person can. It challenges the idea of if Gwen was alive what would have happened to MJ and Peter. Does Peter love Gwen more or is it his guilt that makes those feelings linger? For me, it shows that no matter what Peter will always find himself in MJ’s arms. Spider-Man Life Story is a must read for any Spidey fan as it delivers freshness to something familiar. It’s an Ultimate Spider-Man for a new generation, and it doesn’t hurt that the series has the same artist. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 5 Stars

UNCANNY X-MEN #16
Written By: Matthew Rosenberg
Art By: Salvador Larroca
Colors By: Guru-eFX
Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Cover By: Salvador Larroca and Rachelle Rosenberg
Variant Covers By: Yasmine Putri: Will Sliney & Rachelle Rosenberg
Price: 3.99

Uncanny X-Men #16 This Is Forever Part 6, a great balance between action and story with everything that makes and X-Men story so great.  Knowing that this group of X-Men need to be better than before and different he chooses to step down from leadership. The surprising part is that no leader is chosen, since most of the group have led X teams, all decisions going forward will be voted on.  Magneto shows up to cause trouble with a reformed Brotherhood, but it’s quickly revealed that he Magneto’s clone Joseph. This leads to Juggernaut joining the X-Men and ditching the Brotherhood. The issue ends with two cliffhangers so definitely check this issue out.  Matthew Rosenberg continues to tell a great X-Men story and I can’t wait to see where it takes the title. ~ Justin @ExileState
Verdict: 4 Stars

WAR OF THE REALMS #2
Written By: Jason Aaron
Art By: Russell Dauterman
Colors By: Matthew Wilson
Letters By: VC’s Joe Sabino
Price: $4.99

In recent years I haven’t been a huge fan of Marvel’s events. They never seem to make the impact they promise and are way too bloated to enjoy. I can’t say this for War of the Realms. This event had the necessary build up to where these first two issues have completely delivered as an event series. It feels like the whole Marvel universe has to be involved for this threat as it truly is impacting everyone. The series has wall-to-wall action with drop-dead gorgeous artwork from Russel Dauterman, character study, OMG moments, and even some humor sprinkled through. I hope that the series continues on this momentum with the rest of its run because War of the Realms #2 is a slam dunk. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

WEST COAST AVENGERS #10
Written By: Kelly Thompson
Art By: Moy R.
Colors By: Triona Farrell
Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Price: $3.99

West Coast Avengers #10 sadly marks the end of this short-lived but loved Marvel series, and the finale doesn’t disappoint with its infectious character dynamic and humor. My only nit-pick with most of Thompson’s endings is that they always leave a bit too much opened ended. We’ve seen this with both Hawkeye, Nancy Drew, and now West Coast Avengers. There are romances bubbling here and not full closer on Kate’s mother’s arc, but I hope Thompson has a chance to explore this somewhere else with her rising career at Marvel. It’s also a shame to see a fill-in artist for the last issue, but Moy R. does a good job at matching the art style of the previous artist so it’s not too jarring. Overall, I had a lot of fun with the conclusion of West Coast Avengers #10 with its humor, but I just wish there was more. ~ Kat @ComicUno
Verdict: 4 Stars

Welcome Comic Frontline's Top 5 Panels! This is where the Frontline Six unite to pick their Top 5 comic panels from the week, and then you guys get to vote below which panel was your favorite. In next week's post, we will announce the winner from the poll.

Fan Panel Pick From Last Week - The Unstoppable Wasp #6 - Be Yourself

KAT

Honorable Mention - Spider-Man Life Story #2 - We’ll Always Be Friends

I love how this issue encompasses the complicated relationship between MJ, Gwen, and Peter, especially this scene.

5. West Coast Avengers #10 - Love Triangle

What a cool twist to a new love triangle, too bad we won't see it explored.

4. War of the Realms #2 - A Calling

Jane hearing her calling!

3. Spider-Man Life Story #2 - I Know

I love that MJ always knew Peter was Spider-Man even if they didn't have a romantic relationship with each other. This whole scene shows how powerful their connection is with each other.

2. Spider-Man Life Story #2 - I Have Nothing

What a heartbreaking scene between two broken people. Once again this is why MJ and Peter truly belong together.

1. War of the Realms #2 - All Mother of Asgard

This panel shows that Jane deserves that title. She is more worried about the war she left than the power just given to her.

BRANT

5. Naomi #4 - What's That?!

This symbol has had social media abuzz all week, I'm very curious to see what it actually is. Kind of looks like the White Lantern symbol, but it's slightly different. Not quite Black Lantern either. Most importantly, we're finally getting answers!

4.  Spider-Man: City At War #2 - I Aced It

Love the showcase of how smart Miles is here without even trying.

3. Batman #69 - You Don't Love Me

Man, hard revelation to hear, but this issue is the best of the dream sequences and kind of put a perfect cap on it with this scene.

2. West Coast Avengers #10 - Oddest of Couples

Sad to see this go, but love the sporadic theme song with Gwen and Jeff here!

1. Avengers: No Road Home #10 - House of Ideas

Beautiful scene the way it played out with Vision breathing to life the entire marvelous heroes of the MU.

JAY

Honorable Mention - Batman #69 - Not Him...

I love this scene with Bane seeing that Thomas Wayne may be Bruce's father, but he is not Bruce.

5. Avengers: No Road Home #10 - Hercules In Space...

The best part of Avengers: No Road Home was Hercules for me and to see that his journey doesn't end here is great for me, I have hope!

4. Buffy The Vampire Slayer #4 / Angel #0 - Perspective!

I love these panels so I had to include both of them here (Shut up it's a minor cheat. Don't judge me.) we get to see the same scene Xander's possible "Death" or "Turn" from his and Angel's perspective respectively.

3. Meet The Skrulls #3 - Am I A Skrull Now?

This moment is so powerful with Alice standing there scared, just killing a man who tried to kill her but is still just a little girl wanting her family to love her.

2. Batman #69 - I'm Batman!

I love how King too a line we all know and love from Batman the Animated Series, and put this dark twisted twist on it by having Thomas Wayne say it while fighting Bane and talking about his son.

1. Marvel's Spider-Man City At War #2 - Sorry For Your Loss...

This scene hits home. When you lose someone close to you like a father, everyone tries to comfort you and make your pain hurt less but it doesn't and Miles did something similar to what I did in his place, so this scene rings very true to me, and is very impactful.

MIKE SPIDER-SLAYER

Honorable Mention - West Coast Avengers #10 - The End

This series will be missed. Every time I read this book it put a smile on my face, If you read the letters page Kelly Thompson had some grand plans for this book and unfortunately it didn't make it. Hopefully one day we will see this team return. Remember comic book fans before picking up your second or third Superman or Spider-Man title try thinking outside the box and give a title like West Coast Avengers a chance. You never know you might be surprised. Thank you Kelly Thompson for putting out this wonderful series.

5. The Amazing Nightcrawler #3 - No Jamba Juice For You

This image is everything!! Amara threatening Nightcrawler, Boyd's hilarious. But he immediately fired back and said no Jamba Juice for you.

4. War of the Realms #2 - The Battlefield in the Sky

This strictly made my top five panels of the week due to the beautiful artwork. This is a scene that I could see in a Thor movie. Absolutely beautiful as all the Valkyries make their approach.

3. War of the Realms #2 - Valkyrie Down

I honestly didn’t see this coming as Valkyrie dies a horrible death.

2. Spider-Man Life Story #2 - A Clone!

Peter receives some bad news about Gwen in these panels that set the tone for the 80's.

1. Spider-Man Life Story #2 - The Death of Gwen Stacy...Again

Poor Peter, even in this universe he can't have his Gwen Stacy. I felt so bad for him in this panel.

 THE LOLLIPOP KIDS #5
 "Stand By Me"
Co-Created & Story By: Adam Glass & Aiden Glass
Written By: Adam Glass
Art By: Deigo Yapur
Colors By: DC Alonso
Letters By: Sal Cipriano
Cover A By: Robert Hack
Price: $3.99

The Lollipop Kids face off against Morgan Le Fey and the monsters they have sworn to protect the world from. This book is what 10-year old me would have killed to have been a part of! A secret club filled with mystery, fun, and high fantasy adventures worthy of Excalibur! Glass created more than portals around  Central Park, this book has become a portal where that 10-year old Jay can join in the adventure as one of the Lollipop Kids, and it is AWESOME! This issue not only closes the first adventure in a bittersweet way by having Mia and Nick reconnect only to have her turn 18 and forget everything. I can't wait for the next issue, I can't wait to find out who betrayed the Lollipop Kids! Yapur has something so striking about his style, we have this cinematic larger than life storybook style to it that draws you in and Alfonso really enhances it with the colors. Overall this is such an awesome book that everyone should be reading. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 5 Stars

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #38
Written By: Marguerite Bennett
Art By: Simone di Meo
Colors By: Walter Baiamonte
Letters By: Ed Dukeshire
Main Cover By: Jamal Campbell
Pre-Order Cover By: Sean Galloway
Incentive Cover By: Xermánico
Unlocked Retailer Variant By: Miguel Mercado
Price: $3.99

The penultimate issue of Beyond The Grid is here as the Rangers discover the truth about the universe they are in, the Solarix and the Praetor! This was my favorite issue of Beyond The Grid! Bennett has been building up to this moment where the truth is revealed and she does a great job bringing a darker side to the Morphin Masters, it is almost like when I saw that darker side to the Guardians of the Universe in DC. The mythology of the universe and the Solarix has been really cool to explore and now with the Solar Rangers as a thing, I want to know more. It is sad that their story is about to end, just when it began. di Meo's art really shines here with his Anime/Manga influences coming through big time. Overall this was a good issue, and I think the payoff will be worth the wild ride. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

ACTION COMICS #1010
"Leviathan Rising Part 4"
Written By: Brian Michael Bendis
Art By: Steve Epting
Colors By: Brad Anderson
Letters By: Josh Reed
Cover By: Steve Epting
Variant Cover By: Francis Manapul
Price: $3.99

Lois & Clark go undercover in Spyral as Andi and Chaz when Leviathan strikes. I have been liking Bendis' Superman run overall and this issue was a solid one but I felt it was a little stretched. I love the way Bendis keeps peeling the layers of the Leviathan mystery getting us closer and closer to discovering the truth behind this larger threat. Epting and Anderson do a great job with the art creating this dark grittier side of Superman while dealing with the spy world but knowing when to shine the light. Overall, this was a good issue, but you can see the trade padding. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¼ Stars

HEROES IN CRISIS #8
Written By: Tom King
Art By: Mitch Gerads (pp 1, 6-20) & Travis Moore (pp. 2-5)
Colors By: Mitch Gerads
Letters By:  Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Mitch Gerads
Variant Cover By: Ryan Sook
Price: $3.99

The person responsible for the Sanctuary Slaughter is revealed and it will rock the DC Universe to its core. This issue is so complicated, I say this on a story level and on a personal level. I grew up with Wally West, literally, I started out with his as Kid Flash and watched him grow into a Teen as I did and into a man as I did so his journey is deep for me as a comic fan. To see Wally framing two people was very hard for me to grasp, but it works, because I put aside my fandom and looked at this from a psychological perspective and saw him not as a hero, but as a man. A man who went to war and came home to have lost everything, wife, kids, he lost it all and with no way to get any of it back, and then he just lost something else when he accidentally killed the other heroes. This has been a deeply psychological story where not everything is easy, it reminds us that trauma is real. The art team here did a great job working together to show us this visually and really helped with that feeling. Overall this is a dividing issue, but I have to say I still like it. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

DIAL H FOR HERO #2
Written By: Sam Humphries
Art By: Joe Quinones
Colors By: Jordan Gibson
Letters By: Dave Sharpe
Cover By: Joe Quinones
Price: $3.99

This book is quirky, good, light-hearted fun, but with the dark twist of the Thunderbolt League hunting down the dial. Humphries does a great job at developing these two brand new characters and already creating tension between the two as the H-Dial keeps ringing. The well-placed comedy beats serve up a great distraction from the seriousness of two kids running away with a dangerous device a lot of people are looking for.

Quinones’ lively and clean art compliments Humphries narrative extremely well, and the change-up in style to accommodate each new hero is inspired and authentic. He adapts to the type of character being showcased, this time in both an anthropomorphic cartoon character and a manga/mecha black and white warrior! Gibson’s vibrant coloring provides the final piece to the beautiful imagery as well.

The pacing of the story, how Miguel was already fed up and ready to head back home before realizing what responsibility has been thrust on his shoulders felt authentic and natural. Humphries didn’t drag things out, but tossed us in the middle of these reluctant heroes’ journeys and provided us a dramatic underlying plot as everyone comes for the H-Dial.

There’s still even so much more potential for this series, and it will be fun to see where it goes from here.  ~ Brant @BrantFowler
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

STAR TREK YEAR FIVE #1
Written By: Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly
Art By: Stephen Thompson
Colors By: Charlie Kirchoff
Letters By: Neil Uyetake
Cover By: Greg Hildebrandt
Variant Covers By: J.J. Lendl & Greg Hildebrandt
Price: $3.99

The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 has been together for four years and they are about to enter their final fifth year, and these are the final voyages... I have been waiting for this series since it was announced because it brings closure and much-needed answers to fans of the original series. Lanzing and Collin perfectly captured the essence of the original series and the voices of the crew, I could hear every accent, every inflection of the crew like I was watching a lost episode. I will also say this feeling of familiarity is also greatly due to the art team of Thompson and Kirchoff who together captures the look and aesthetics of the original series. I saw the subtle way Nimoy would raise a brow, or Uhura's gestures as she worked the helm. Overall this was a great first issue and one from the casual Trek Fan to a diehard Trekkie needs to check out. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¾ Stars

AVENGERS: EDGE OF INFINITY #1
Written By: Ralph Macchio
Art By: Andrea Di Vito
Colors By: Laura Villari
Letters By: VC's Travis Lanham
Cover By: Todd Nauch & Rachelle Rosenberg
Variant Cover By: Ron Lim & Israel Silva
Price: $3.99

M.O.D.O.K. has usurped control of L.U.N.A.R. and several fragments of a cosmic cube to which he plans to use to take over the world unless the Avengers can stop him. This was an ok book, it was oversimplified even for a basic level story like this. This felt more simplified than one of Marvel's "Animated" books geared for the younger readers. What I mean by oversimplified is every time someone would do something, like Iron Man using his repulsor beams, or Captain Marvel being hit by, and absorbing energy blasts they would explain it. Macchio does this hand-holding writing throughout the book. The art by Di Vito was really solid, especially the action scenes. Overall, not a bad book, but I just felt like it was "dumbed down" by over-explaining things. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 2 ½ Stars

FANTASTIC FOUR #9
"Outside The Box"
Written By: Dan Slott
Art By: Aaron Kuder, Stefano Caselli & Paco Medina
Colors By: Erick Arciniega
Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Cover By: Esad Ribic
Variant Covers By: Various Artists
Price: $3.99

The Fantastic Four are trapped by Doom and must take him out and save the world from Galactus who is about to blow. Slott knows how to write the Fantastic Four. I loved how connected they feel here, playing off their strength as a team, and having Sue be the guiding voice through it all. My only gripe is that we don't know who the mysterious girl is, or seen the repercussions of Franklin's rebellion, but I hope we see them in future issues. Slott lends the right amount of science, action, heroics, family, and humor, making the perfect formula for a great Fantastic Four book! The art team did a great job blending their styles and kudos for the Doom scenes, the emotion was so well done. Overall, this was a great issue, but for some reason, it feels so long between issues. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

MARVEL RISING #2 (of 5)
Written By: Nilah Magruder
Art By: Roberto Di Salvo
Colors By: Rachelle Rosenberg
Letters By: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Audrey Mok
Variant Cover By: Savana Ganucheau
Deadpool Card Art By: Rico Renzi
Price: $3.99

Of the Marvel Rising stories we’ve gotten so far, this is the strongest for me. The group of heroes chosen for this thrown together team fit well together and make sense. The happenstance of them touring a college last issue and being thrust into this conflict felt natural and fun.

This issue, the action picks up as Quake joins the fray, causing a bit of tension between her and Inferno - they have history. This only strengthens the dynamic of the team, which becomes even stronger by tossing in America Chavez to add to their combined power.

The choice of villains for this arc in Morgan Le Fey was an inspired one as well, as these superheroes have to combat old world magic and defend the home of the Inhumans, a place Inferno is reluctant to return to, and therein lies even more conflict. For what is, by all rights, a fun, all-ages type of story,  there are many layers and intricacies laid out before us as Magruder builds on these characters and their mission throughout.

Di Salvo’s art is fun, clean, detailed and befitting of the story. From the great character likenesses to the imaginative constructs and creatures Le Fey has created to be her army, he breathes beautiful life into the page, only complimented by Rosenberg’s simple but effective palette.

Overall, this was a fun, intense issue that progressed the plot nicely and gave us a lot more characterization to invest us further into the story. Kudos. ~ Brant @BrantFowler
Verdict: 4 ¼ Stars

WAR OF THE REALMS: UNCANNY X-MEN #1
Written By: Matthew Rosenberg
Art By: Pere Perez
Colors By: Rachelle Rosenberg
Letters By: VC’s Travis Lanham
Cover By: David Yardin
Price: $3.99

War of the Realms Uncanny X-Men #1 takes the X-Men away from their war on past mistakes and miscues and thrust them into the war of the nine realms that have come to the last realm still standing. Pulled into the fight while looking for Mirage in New York City, the X-Men are outnumbered and at every turn, they face new unfamiliar dangers from across the realms, including flying demon dogs, ice giants and hordes of Dark Elves. This is a solid start for this mini-series and it works well because of the writer. Matthew Rosenberg is also writing the ongoing Uncanny X-Men series and because of this the continuity and flow of the team work well. I was concerned about that when this mini-series was announced, but everything that has happened in Uncanny X-Men with the exception of two things is still here, so fear not fans. Cyclops is actually still a cyclops, which works even better since as Havok puts it in this issue, they are fighting LOTR’s in NYC. Pere Perez’ art is great in this issue and we get excellent action and great backgrounds, the pairing with Rachelle Rosenberg on colors works very well here. Next issue sees an old x-men member return, but is he, Friend or Foe?! ~ Justin @ExileState
Verdict: 3 ½ Stars

Kickstart the Week with SAFFRON: Spacetime Academy Adventures #1

By: Nicole D’Andria

Experience the colourful all-ages space adventure comic, SAFFRON! In this world, you’ll take part in the daily life of the Spacetime Academy For Fundamental Representatives Of NEXUS (SAFFRON for short), and train to become a spacetime officer! I even spoke with the creative team on the book to learn more about their outer space world.

In SAFFRON, a young woman by the name of Saffron Sizemore falls through a wormhole and appears at her ironic namesake, the Spacetime Academy For Fundamental Representatives Of NEXUS(SAFFRON)! She becomes part of the academy and trains to be a spacetime officer while trying to find her way back to Earth. A planet that no one knows were or when it is.

This project is for the first issue of a four issue story arc that may go on to be an ongoing series with the help of Kickstarter. SAFFRON is being published by Fair Spark Books, a UK publishing house known for its all-ages family friendly books and comics. The creator/writer is Samuel George London, who’s previous comic projects include the Bachelor inspired superhero detective story The S Factor and another sci-fi epic, Milford Green. The artist is Rosie Alexander, whose loves include art history, cinema, and storytelling as well as modern technologies and comics.

The project is trying to raise its goal of $1,935 by May 6, 2019 at 6:59 PM EDT. Get a digital (£2) and physical (£3) copy of SAFFRON #1, as well as a coluring book version (£5)! You can even share the colourful world of SAFFRON with the Hospital Gift Copy level (£12), which means you'll be adding a copy of SAFFRON: Spacetime Academy Adventures #1 to the Little Heroes Comics kit, a group that gives comic making kits to children with long term illnesses who are in hospital. So, help a great cause and check out the rest of the rewards on the SAFFRON Kickstarter.

Now, let’s delve into the world of SAFFRON with writer Samuel George London and artist Rosie Alexander.

Samuel George London

Me: What is a typical day like at the Spacetime Academy For Fundamental Representatives Of NEXUS?

London: The best way to describe it would be varied. A trainee spacetime officer has a lot to learn, from how NOT to interfere with events of the past to how to arrive at the correct time and place you intended. However, although it's varied, like most schools or academies there is a standard structure to their day, which follows the usual schedule of any learning institution.

Me: How would you describe Saffron Sizemore and her friends at the academy?

London: Saffron is very energetic and enthusiastic. She's also very practical, but this can get her into trouble sometimes because she doesn't always think things through.

Her friends at the academy are Flyx, Gren and Uval. Flyx is a technological genius. If you ever have problems with your wormhole wand, he's your guy. Gren is very conscious of being bigger than everyone else, but she covers it up through humour. And finally, Uval is the star student at the academy and is good at everything, but this leads him to be arrogant and overconfident. With someone as capable as Saffron coming into the class, there could be some tension there.

Me: What do you like most about astrophysics and how do they apply to the world of SAFFRON?

London: The best part of astrophysics is discovering new things, of which there is an unlimited source in the universe. For instance, last week they revealed the first photo of a black hole... HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!

In terms of how astrophysics applies to the world of SAFFRON, it's really the scope of space. With SAFFRON, I'll be able to go into the basics of how (theoretically) black holes, spacetime, wormholes and even how Dyson sphere's work, which is a theoretical energy generator that surrounds a star.

Me: One of your reward tiers involves adding a copy of SAFFRON to the Little Heroes Comics kit, which gives comic making kits to children with long term illnesses in the hospital. How did you get involved with this project and what else can you tell us about this great cause?

London: I became aware of Little Heroes Comics at a comic con in the UK last year, and was instantly on board to help because when I was 13, I was in hospital long term for chemotherapy. After I found out about Little Heroes I pitched a story for their second anthology and it was accepted. Since, I've also had another story accepted for the third anthology, which will be published soon.

Me: Another reward is a coloring book of the comic. Why did you feel it was important to include this reward in particular?

London: The coloring book was important because the comic itself is very colourful and because it's all-ages, it's the ideal comic for a coloring book.

Me: You are a collaborator on this project in addition to Fair Spark Books and Aaron Rackley (Dan helps Aaron but it's mostly Aaron). What can you tell us about why you chose this publisher and editor for SAFFRON?

London: Fair Spark Books is a fairly new all-ages publisher based in the UK run by Aaron Rackley, who also runs Little Heroes, and so there was a lot of crossover in terms of working together before. The fact that they're based in the UK and aimed at all-ages, it was an ideal fit for this project.

Me: How did you first meet Rosie Alexander and what about her art made you decide she was the perfect artist for SAFFRON?

London: I first pitched the story to Aaron and he loved it, but we didn't have an artist and so we did what we all do when we're at a loss: we put out a tweet on Twitter for artists and Rosie put her name forward. Her bright and colourful art was absolutely perfect for what I had in mind.

Me: What is the number one reason why you think people should pledge money to your Kickstarter project?

London: The number one reason people should pledge their money to SAFFRON is if they like the idea of a colourful all-ages space adventure comic. Also, if you're into astrophysics and you have children, this is something that you can enjoy together.

Me: What inspirational words do you have for aspiring comic book writers in addition to the advice you provided us previously when we talked about The S Factor?

London: On top of reading a variety of subjects, I think aspiring comic book writers should study successful writers. One of my favourite writers to learn from is George R. R. Martin who quotes William Faulkner to say, "The only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself."When I heard that for the first time it really resonated with me, and it's something that I always try to keep in mind when I'm writing.

Me: If you could spend the day at the Spacetime Academy For Fundamental Representatives Of NEXUS, what would you want to do most?

Alexander: If I could run around SAFFRON for a whole day, my first (and possibly only) point of business would be to use one of the amazing Warp Wands! I'd suit up and warp all over the galaxy!

Me: Which character was your favourite to design in SAFFRON and why?

ZENTA! Hands down!

All Sam told me about Zenta was... he was the same species as Professor Zarlo, black and red were his main colours AND he was our villain. That kind of freedom for character design is amazing—so I leapt at each character, but most of all Zenta; because I love a villainous bad guy!

Me: What page/panel was your favourite to draw and why?

Alexander: The wormhole page was pretty hard to plan out, but once I figured how Saffron could travel across the page, it immediately became THE most enjoyable page to colour! Who doesn't love drawing WORMHOLES?! Thinking up dynamic, interesting comic panels is half the thrill of drawing a comic!

Me: List three reasons why you think this comic book is perfect for children.

It’s fun, adventurous and has the potential of bringing real world science into children's life. Enjoying a fantastical story while learning about the universe, you can't get much better than that. What's more? It's popping with colour!

Me: Some of your interests included in your biography are art history, cinema and modern technologies. How do they influence your comic book work?

Alexander: Art history, cinema and modern technologies are truly at the heart of my interests. To me, it's like a weaving tapestry of bringing together the best of the world (across time), and then sharing it! I always believe there is intelligence, imagination, compassion and joy from all these areas, and that taking note of it helps us continue to understand AND create even more great things.

All in all, it's using the knowledge and technologies we have right now, along with all the amazing artistic history we've learnt, to most eloquently and magically describe the world around us, or the worlds in our minds. So, any story or script that I read which makes me feel that way, I jump on.

Me: What is the number one reason why you think people should pledge money to your Kickstarter project?

Alexander: Because pledging to our Kickstarter will help this comic reach children who are spending too much of their childhood in the hospital. Through the amazing charity Little Heroes (Fair Spark Books), we have the opportunity to bring a new exciting world to each child's imagination. Pledge enough and more charity packs can be sent to hospitals, as well as your own front door! It's a win-win!

Me: What inspirational words do you have for aspiring comic book artists?

Alexander: Draw every chance you get; but, most importantly, discover the things in the world that truly inspire you. Be interested by everything and have confidence. An eclectic pallet of the world makes for an eclectic art pallet, too.

Me: And what additional inspirational words do you have for aspiring comic book colourists?

Alexander: Pay attention to ‘real colour.’ Pick up the object next to you and really look at the hues. Never assume you know. And if you can, always see things face to face, at different times of the day. Your eyes are so much better than any camera or photograph.

What's more—study the great artists of today, the great artists of yesterday, and even the not so great ones throughout history. Colour theory is only ever as strong as your inner colour preference compass, too. What do you think looks good? Question it. Play with it. Enjoy it. Work at it. Colour is a passion, so, GO FOR IT! And when in doubt… put the opposite colour next to it.

Me: Thanks for taking the time to help us travel through the galaxy, Sam and Rosie! If you’re reading this and are interested in learning more about the Spacetime Academy For Fundamental Representatives Of NEXUS, check out the SAFFRON Kickstarter here.
