Kat's Pull List 5/7/14

Kat talks about all the comics she is getting this week. Check out what Kat is excited for in this week's pull list.

Boom Studios

The Woods #1

This looked like an interesting title. The summery on the Boom website says that it is similar to Morning Glories, one of my favorite comic book series. So, I have to give this series a try. I am sucker for teen comic book stories. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 47)

Dark Horse

Angel and Faith Season 10 #2

I didn't love the first issue, but I have to give this series a fair chance. I would love to get a Buffy/Angel title monthly, but it seems like I might have to go back and get the trades depending on how this issue goes. (Exclusive to Comic Uno 47)

DC Comics

Batman Eternal #5

I have been loving Batman Eternal, and it is great that we don't have to wait long for the next issue because it is a weekly series. This week we get to see Red Robin shine. Hope to see a good Tim Drake New 52 story, because I haven't read one since the New 52 started.

Detective Comics #31

Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellatto is one of my favorite creative teams. Can't wait to see what they do with Batman. I thought their first issue was a solid start. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 47)

Earth 2 #23

Earth 2 has become one of my favorite series ever since Tom Taylor took over. Really excited for the Superman and Lois Lane interaction.

Green Arrow #31

I have a love/hate relationship with the new Green Arrow series. I like where the story is going and it always leaves us with great cliffhangers, but this is still not my Oliver Queen. This series needs to lighten up a little bit more or at least make the supporting cast more interesting.

Futures End #1

A month after Batman Eternal a new weekly series is coming to DC Comics. This one I am a little bit more hesitant about buying every week. This will be a big title with major changes to the DC universe, but they are using C-list DC characters that I don't know if I will care enough about to follow their stories every week.

IDW

Powerpuff Girls #9

I have been having a blast reading Powerpuff Girls. It is a really fun series that has the same tone as the television series. The Rowdy Ruff boys return in this issue! I wonder what trouble they will get themselves into. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 47)

Image

Madame Frankenstein #1

I don't much about this title, but it looked interested from the summary. I am going to give the first issue a try. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 47)

Real Heroes #2

I was a little disappointed with the first issue of this series, but still very excited by the premise of the story. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 47)

Marvel

The Amazing Spider-man #1.1

In this mini series Dan Slott will be retelling the first year origins of Spider-man. I am a sucker for origin stories as you guys know, and Spider-man is one of my favorite superheroes. So, I am pretty excited to see what Dan Slott does with this series.

Iron Fist the Living Weapon #2

I was 50/50 on this series with the first issue. I am going to read the second issue and this may be the deciding issue to see if I will be continuing with this series. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 47)

Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-man #1

This is my most anticipated issue for the week. Miles Morales is one of my favorite characters that has been introduced in recent years. Loved Bendis' last run with the character and can't wait to see what other stories are in store. Even though he is with the Ultimates I hope to see his supporting cast still remain in this series also.

Original Sin #1

I was really shocked by issue 0 of Original Sin, I really enjoyed it. I hope this can be a great event for Marvel.

She Hulk #4

She Hulk has so far been a solid middle ground series. I really like the character and the direction the series is going. I just think the story needs a little push to make this series become outstanding. Hope this push will come sooner than later.

Vertigo

The Wake #8

This issue was scheduled to come out last week, but it was delayed for an extra week. So, check out my last pull list article Here to hear my thoughts on the Wake. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 47)

Zenescope

Grimm Fairy Tales #97

I am getting Grimm Fairy Tales at whim. I always wanted to get into the series and I thought this would be a perfect point to jump on as we inch closure to issue 100. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 47)

Shotgun Wedding #2 Review: Here Comes the Bride

By: Nicole D'Andria

This mini-series started out strong with Shotgun Wedding #1 and it continues to build up in this issue. We get more flashbacks, more characters, more character development and even less action than the first issue.

It was four years ago when Mike left his partner in the spy business at the altar and now she’s back for revenge… which is especially unfortunate for Mike since he’s getting married to the girl of his dreams.

Writer William Harms starts this issue with another flashback. At first I worried that there were too many flashbacks to too many periods of time. In fact, while that thought continued in my mind throughout the opening, when we return to the flashback again later on in this issue it’s shown that not only was the flashback an integral part to the plot, it also adds a new dimension to the character of Chloe that goes farther than just a psychotic and jilted bride left at the altar.

Pulling a Catwoman are we?

Mike and Denise are also solid characters and it was nice to see them interact with each other in this issue. I would like to see them have a little more character development though, and I’m looking forward to seeing if Denise finds out about Mike’s line of work… and her reaction.

Edward Pun’s artwork continues to suit the tone of the story. However, unlike the previous issues the backgrounds don’t seem as detailed or fun to look at. In the first issue, we have a psychedelic elevator. Here, we have… bright lights. Sometimes the lighting is distracting, but it can add to the mood of the panel. The illustrations, overall, are still solid. The shadows and speedlines may be a turn off for some, but the expressions are good, the action panels without dialogue flow and I still support Pun’s decision to keep the comic in black-and-white.

This issue does a great job developing Chloe’s character. She is clearly a threat and just like the last issue, I am craving the moment when Chloe and Mike confront each other. This was another successful step down the aisle, and I can’t wait to see what’s at the end of it!

I give Shotgun Wedding #2 a 7.0/10.

"Batman Day" July 23rd

By: Nicole D'Andria

In honor of Batman’s 75th anniversary being this year, DC Entertainment has announced that Wednesday, July 23rd will be “Batman Day.” They will be partnering up with comic book retailers and bookstores across the country to throw celebrations for Batman. Three days after “Batman Day,” on July 26th, DC will be teaming up with Random House to celebrate the day in over 1,000 libraries across the United States.

Fans who come to these celebrations on “Batman Day” will get a free special edition copy of Detective Comics #27. The issue includes a reimagining of the debut issue of Batman back in 1939. It was designed by Chip Kidd with a script by Brad Meltzer, who is New York Times #1 bestselling author.

Retailers will also be getting Batman-related collectibles like a Batman 75th anniversary cape, bookmarks featuring essential Batman graphic novels and four Batman masks crafted by comic book artist Ryan Sook. These four masks include: Batman’s mask in the original Detective Comics #27, which was originally designed by Batman’s creator by Bob Kane; the Batman ’66 mask from the comic book series inspired by the classic Adam West television series; the mask from Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns; and the New 52 Batman mask originally drawn by Greg Capullo.

Of course, not everything being offered is free. That same day Robin Rises: Omega #1 and Grayson #1 will be in stores. Robin Rises: Omega #1 is an over-sized one-shot created by Peter J. Tomasi (Batman and Robin, Green Lantern Corps) and Andy Kubert (X-Men, Batman Eternal covers). Grayson #1 is the beginning of a new series starring the first Robin, Dick Grayson, who becomes a spy (I’m getting a very Bruce Wayne, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. vibe here) by Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash, Batman Eternal) and Mikel Janin (Justice League Dark).

If you can’t make it on Batman day to your local comic book store you can download a free copy of Detective Comics #27 only on July 23rd at www.readdcentertainment.com and all digital platforms including Kindle, iBookstore, Nook, Google Play and comixology.com

This celebration comes as no surprise. There have been some nice animated shorts dedicated to the year like "Batman: Strange Days" and “Batman Beyond,” so why not an entire day? Batman is DC’s number one cash cow, what with his hit movies, comic books, video games and numerous merchandise. It’s nice though that you can get some free stuff on “Batman Day” and I still plan on enjoying it.

The Reyes Countdown #6 Week Of 4/30/14

By: Reyes

Hey Comic Book fans! This is a series where I (Jay Reyes) review every book I got in one week and pick my favorite.

Silver Surfer #2 (Number 8 and Worst Pick of the week)

After my first read through of this book I gave it a 4 out 5, and that didn’t feel right so I read it again and wow I really didn’t like it the second go through. The writing was very sloppy in this book and there were a plethora of plot holes. (SPOILER ALERT Highlight To Read) Why didn’t they just start off with the edge of reality sword and kill the Never Queen, why would an advanced intelligent species just go through all the trouble to just fling “champions” at the Never Queen without the sword. There were more annoying little plot holes like that which I only found after reading this issue a second time. I’m going to give Dan Slott the benefit of the doubt and say that this issue was just rushed and that #3 is going to blow my socks off.

Rai #1(Number 7)

Rai #1 wasn’t that bad of an issue but for an issue 1 it was a little too confusing. I liked the concept of a Japan that was murder free for many years and I liked that Rai was like a myth too the people of New Japan. Toward the middle of the issue it got kind of draggy and boring but it picked up towards the end.  The artwork was superb and I like the concept of the story so I’m going to give the next issue a go around. But I wonder is this in the future of the Valiant universe or is it it’s own separate universe because Rai looks eerily similar to Bloodshot.

Flash Annual #3(Number 6)

The Future Flash segments were so very interesting and I really love the design for the costume. I just wish that the whole issue revolved around the Future Flash and nothing else. His segments were the only thing that didn’t bore me through the whole issue. Plus his artwork was far more nicer than Present Flash's story. I’m very worried about Robert Vendetti writing The Flash. After the awesome creative team we had I just don’t know if Robert Venditti and Van Jensen have what it takes to match the last creative team. I’m rooting for them though.

Forever Evil Aftermath Batman VS. Bane #1 (Top 5)

If Peter Tomasi was trying to entertain me he accomplished his job because I was thoroughly entertained. This issue was for all intents and purposes one big awesome fight scene which ended with Batman on top which shouldn’t be a spoiler because I mean come on its the goddamned Batman. The art was very nice and I really enjoyed the action panels which looked brutal. I really wish Bane has worn a Batman type outfit during the fight because that would have been epic.

The Amazing Spider-Man#1 (Number 4)

This issue shocked me at how underwhelming it was. The writing wasn’t that bad and the art was great but the main story was so uninteresting. I’d rather they have started right off the bat with (SPOILER ALERT Highlight To Read) Black Cat’s revenge. The back-up stories for fun and were great ways to promote their future Spider books. I was hoping for a Spidey-Verse preview but we had to wait for Free Comic Book Day for that. The main story was boring but the back ups were great so that was the saving grace for this issue as a whole.

Inhuman #1 (Number 3)

I know this issue came out a couple of weeks ago but it was a pleasant surprise that came with Amazing Spider-Man #1. Inhuman #1 was actually really well done and I enjoyed it. I was really down on the Inhumans but after Ms. Marvel and now this I'm really looking forward to the future of the Inhumans I'm just really vying for a Black Bolt solo. The art was fantastic and the story was awesome.

All New X Men #26 (Numbah 2)

This issue was freaking awesomely awesome! Jean and old Cyclops have a legitimate conversation and it was a great character piece on Cyclops and where his mentality it. It must be hard for Cyclops to control himself around the woman he is in love with. His and Jean's relationship was great but Ms. Pryde’s “You better never be alone with her again” was kind of a foreshadowing of what's to come with the Uncanny X-Men and if that books going to deal with the cliffhanger at the end of this issue than that is an instant buy.  The only thing that kept this issue from number one was the art.

Batman Eternal #4 (Number One!!! Pick of the Week)

Batman will probably always be my favorite hero and this is the reason why right here. His books are almost always fantastic and this issue was no exception. The art was stunning and the story was amazing as well. Batgirl's coping with the arrest of her dad was fantastic and her punching Bats in the face was pretty fun to see. Barbra showed signs of Oracle and all is well with the world. This issue was very Batgirl centric but lets not forget Stephanie Brown. Steph's story is great and very interesting. Her whole family is freaking crazy and you genuinely feel bad for Stephanie because now she has no one left to run to. Hopefully the Caped Crusader can save Stephanie Brown before it’s too late.

Kat's Pull List 5/14/14

Kat talks about all the comics she is getting this week. Check out what Kat is excited for in this week's pull list.

DC Comics

Batgirl #31

Even though there have been some weak issues lately, I am still really looking forward to this issue. One of my favorite type of superhero stories is when a character's identity is in danger. Will someone find out that Barbara is Batgirl?

Batman Eternal #6

Batman Eternal has been a great weekly series so far. I get excited for every issue! I especially love how they spread out the bat family.

Justice League United #1

I really enjoyed issue 0 of Justice League United, even if in my option it wasn't a true issue 0. But this series has the best Pre New 52 vibe. So if you miss the old DC universe, than you may want to give this series a try. Might I also add that the rooster is awesome!

Futures End #2

Futures End surprised me last week. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. Maybe this series will allow me to like these characters I never cared about previously.

Smallville Lantern #2

Smallville is such a great under the radar series. Green Lantern is coming to the Smallville universe in a new and innovative way. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 48)

Image

Starlight #3

Mark Millar does it again, except this time without delays (yet). Starlight is such a fun series that digs to the core of a retired hero. Can't wait to read this issue! (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 48)

Marvel

All New Ultimates #2

Don't ask me why I am getting this issue. I really didn't like the first issue, but I love the rooster. I want to give the series a fair shot before I drop it. But please just get a new artist!

All New X-men #27

I think All New X-men is getting back on track after Trials of Jean Grey. Even though I didn't love Battle of the Atom I am glad that the future X-men are coming back. We need closure with that story.

Avengers Undercover #4

I don't love Avengers Undercover, but every issue just gives me enough to get the next issue. Also it is added plus that I just want to see the Runaways again. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 48)

Captain Marvel #3

I am really glad that I am liking this series so far. The last volume wasn't the best and I had to drop it, but this new volume is everything I wanted a Captain Marvel series to be.

Fantastic Four #4

This is so far the best Fantastic Four series in ages! I just hope we get a real story arc soon with the team actually coming together. It seems very separate right now. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 48)

United States of Murder INC #1

Don't know much about this series, but I have always wanted to try a Bendis creator owned book. Hope it is good!

Zenescope

Robyn Hood Legends #3

Robyn Hood has been a solid series so far and I can't wait to go back to the previous series and learn more about her character. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 48)
