Kat talks about all the comics she is getting this week. Check out what Kat is excited for in this week's pull list.

DC Comics

Batman Eternal #7

Batman Eternal has had some weak issues in the past couple of weeks, but I am still always excited to read this title. I love what this event is doing with the Bat Family.

Forever Evil #7

This title has been delayed for months. So, I hope the ending to this event was worth the wait. For some reason I have a gut feeling it won't be.

Harley Quinn #6

When this series i good, it is really good. But there have been some off issues with this series, this story arc included. So, I can't say I am super excited to read this issue. (Exclusive for Comic Uno Episode 49)

Justice League #30

You may start seeing a trend with this pull list, a lot of these titles were delayed because of Forever Evil. Justice League is one of those titles, but I got to say I am pretty excited to see Lex Luthor and Captain Cold join the Justice League.

Justice League of America #14

This title was useless to delay. The sequel series has two issues in the can and the finale is just coming out now. As much as I love this title I think that will affect my grading for the book this week.

Futures End #3

Futures End has been a surprising series for me. I don't really care about the main characters, but the story has been intriguing me. Hope it keeps up the momentum.

Sinestro #2

For some reason it feels like forever ago when I read Sinestro #1. I really loved the first issue and can't wait to get my hands on this one. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 49)

IDW

Dexter's Lab #2

I love what IDW has been doing with their Cartoon Network properties. Dexter's Lab is a fun mini series that I look forward to reading. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 49)

Image

Invincible #111

Really looking forward to seeing what the big ramifications of the events of this issue. Something big will be happening to Invincible. (Exclusive To Comic Uno Episode 49)

MPH #1

Even though I hate Millar's delays, I still love his writing. Looking forward to seeing what this new series will bring.

Marvel

All New Doop #2

I really enjoyed the first issue of Doop. I am looking forward to more fun antiques in issue 2.

The Amazing Spider-man #2

So happy to have Peter Back! Look forward to more story arcs with our favorite web slinger.

Amazing X-men #7

I know I dropped Amazing X-men, but I thought it would be fun to get the Super friends issue. I hope it ends up being good.(Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 49)

Daredevil #3

I have been loving the new Daredevil series. It is one of the All New Marvel Now titles that made sense that they rebooted. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 49)

Elektra #2

I am still trying to decide if I like the style of the book. So, I am going to give Elektra a few issues. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 49)

Nova #17

I love this cover! It makes me super excited to read this issue. It seems like Nova is going back on track. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 49)

Original Sin #2

I didn't love the first issue of Original Sin, but I do like the premise of the story more than past Marvel events. Lets hope this can be a solid Marvel event.

Uncanny X-men #21

This is also a title that I dropped, but the synopsis interested me. I want to see what has happened to Dazzler since Mystique replaced her. (Exclusive to Comic Uno Episode 49)

Zenescope

Godstorm Hercules #2

Hercules had a solid start, and it is interested to see male lead character in the Zenescope universe. Interested to see where the story goes.

Grimm Fairy Tales: Animated Pilot Trailers

The Zenescope Entertainment series Grimm Fairy Tales is the cornerstone of the company’s Universe, thanks to Kickstarter and the hard work and dedication from everyone involved there is now a pilot for Grimm Fairy Tales: Animated.

Grimm Fairy Tales: Animated pilot episode made its debut at C2E2 2013directed by Jon Schnepp(Metalocalypse)and created by Zenescope Entertainment, Titmouse Animation, and Schneppzone, Inc. The pilot features the voices of Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, 300), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2, The Devil’s Carnival), Robert Forster (Olympus Has Fallen, Jackie Brown) and Chris Hardwick (Nerdist) and character designs by artists Alex Pardee, Eric Powell, Bill Sienkiewicz and other top industry talent.

I thought that it would be cool to show the two trailers that are out there for this series as Zenescope shops it around. I also thought I’d share my thoughts on them. I am interested in the story, but I think the trailer should have more content. These are just the first 3 and 4 minutes of the pilot respectively. This doesn’t really give you an idea of the overall episode. I would like to see a well-rounded trailer that shows me what the story in this episode is actually about. The art is a bit basic, but they used some interesting transitions to spice things up. The series is supposed to showcase different art styles. I hope it gets picked up and who knows we may see it done in a Bruce Timm style or maybe even a Steven E Gordon or Phil Bourassa style.

Behind the Curtain: Gathering the Troops

If 2009 was Comic Related's biggest year in terms of coverage and numbers, 2010 had to be our biggest year in terms of support.

As detailed in the last installment, our numbers skyrocketed in 2009. And though they fell off a bit, they were still really good by the end of the year. And now, we were really making our presence known.

In 2010, CR hit 13 conventions, including New York Comic Con. We didn't make it back to SDCC that year, but we did have correspondent coverage. And we covered a TON of stories.  I personally didn't make it to a few of them for various reasons. I did, however, go to several local events, including being the main CR rep at SPACE. This was the first time I was the only CR guy on site (though we did have help in the form of Raichal Gladman and Brian Carson, who were invaluable throughout the weekend). It was an interesting experience for me, and a lot of fun. I also got to meet a lot more of the local talent with SPACE taking place in the tri-state area where I'm based. (the tri-state area being Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana in this case).

C2E2 was another big convention we did. This was the first year for the con, and CR was there in full force. I was there, though, both for CR and for myself. Haven Distributors was based in Chicago, so they had worked out with Reed to have a Haven Indy Island prominently placed on the show floor where several creators whose books were carried by Haven were set up selling their wares. Myself and Wannabez artist Scott DM Simmons were among those. We had issues of Wannabez #1 out for sale, and I was doing sketch cards for the first time. It was the largest con I had ever set up at, even though it was probably the smallest year for C2E2. We had many of our friends there, including my then co-host and Zone 4 co-founder, Chuck Kennedy. We even did a Zone 4 episode from the hotel room. Also there were Gordon Dymowski, Decapitated Dan, Dustin Carson and other CR friends. As far as creators go, there were a lot of heavy hitters there including Geoff Johns, Gail Simone, J. Scott Campbell and more. Jerry Lawler was there, and Alex Ross's empty table was right across from me. Scott and I joked about it all weekend, Ross being imaginary because the Chicago native was never there. Literally, I don't think he even came! But his art did.

Speaking of Geoff Johns, this was the con that an older woman came up to me asking me to basically forge Johns' name to a comic for her grandson because the line to have Johns sign it himself was too long. I didn't do it, but it's definitely a memory I relish. haha

In the aftermath of C2E2, John, Chuck and I did a Related Recap episode talking about the show. It was a really good one for us because Chuck was able to connect with a lot of publishers (they were all there in full force) and form relationships with them. I believe this was the show where we made headway with both Marvel and DC. Marvel specifically complimented us on our site and were very positive about working with us going forward.

We had a pretty good year, coverage wise, and our numbers still remained steady from the end of the previous year. We were really putting our name out there, connecting with creators and publishers, and making our presence known at conventions. We had great experiences at all the cons we did that year, but for us, the biggest one was the smallest convention we attended: Champion City Comic Con.

2010 was the second year for Champion City Comic Con, a small con in Springfield, Ohio run by our good friends Scott Riley (owner of Main Street Comics and Games) and Bill Gladman, held at Wittenberg University. The first year was smaller, less vendors and creators, and recent years have seen guests like Tim Seeley and Mark Waid. But 2010 was special to us because to date it was the largest gathering of Comic Related family we've ever had! Some 40-50 of us in one central location at the same time! It was here that I first met Cary Kelley in person, and we took our first official Zone 4 photo with Cary, Chuck K., John and myself. Ron Fortier was there, Victor Dandridge, Frank Raynor, Lisa Moore, Eric Ratcliffe, Chad Strohl, the Carsons, Matt Zolman, Tim Hagans, Ren McKenzie, Eric Adams, Scott DM Simmons, and many more. We played disc golf, hung out at the con, had dinner together (more on that in a minute), and somehow wrangled everyone together for a group photo (or at least as many as we could get together - and sadly I can't find the shot).

This was the year the New Comic Day team did a panel together, and where we recorded three live-action NCD strips (1, 2, 3). It was also the first and only time I've met my very good friend and long-time collaborator Lisa Moore in person.

Going back to the dinner, after the con, we all went to Golden Corral (hey, you try wrangling that many people anywhere but a buffet!) and all changed seats to talk to different people and so forth. It was truly a fun and spectacular evening. A funny thing happened, though, when we took pictures. We were all in a special room, so he had more privacy than other patrons. What also happened to be in this room, though, was the fire exit. So as we are posing for the Zone 4 photo, Chuck K. accidentally leans against the fire door and sets off the alarm. The restaurant is so busy and loud, though, that NO ONE NOTICED! lol We just stood there taking pictures, and in between holding our ears for the longest time, laughing our fool heads off. It was hysterical.

We wrapped up the year with New York Comic Con, another show CR has always had a presence at since the con's inception. Chuck did a special blog from the show as he had done for SDCC the previous year.

All in all, 2010 was our best year in many ways. True, 2008 really put us on the map, and 2009 blew us up. But 2010 was the year we were tested, and we passed with flying colors. We were here to stay and thrive, and the support from our extended family and readers couldn't have been better. We weren't going anywhere... or so we thought.

Next time: 2011 comes, and life causes CR to take a turn for the worst.

The CW Confirms John Wesley Shipp's Role In The Flash

Ever since it was announced that John Wesley Shipp had been cast for The CW Network'sArrow Spin-off The Flash fans have been speculating like crazy on what that unnamed role would be. Well after months of speculation with the most popular theory having been that he would play the role of Jay Garrick, the Golden Age Flash. The network has confirmed that the mysterious role will that of Henry Allen, the father of lead character Barry Allen who is played by Grant Gustin.

"Given his history with The Flash,Andrew [Kreisberg], Geoff [Johns] and I could only think of one person we wanted to play Barry's father and that was John Wesley Shipp. He gives a fantastic and emotional performance in the pilot and we are looking forward to his presence in many more episodes. Also, personally, it was just wonderful to work with him again since my days at Dawson's Creek. He's a great actor and a great guy."
- Greg Berlanti, Flash Executive Producer

This is the first official announcement from the network on the role but viewers with a keen eye might have caught a glimpse of Shipp in the Allen Family picture from the extended trailer released by The CW during the Network's Up Front trailers a few weeks ago. When Shipp's casting was first announced we covered it on Comic Frontline LIVE and I thought this would be the role he was playing.

Shipp played the title role of Barry Allen/The Flash in the 1990-1991 CBSThe Flash series, while the role of Henry Allen was then played by veteran character actor M. Emmet Walsh. The casting of Shipp in this role is an obvious nod to Flash fans. Shipp's role as Henry could be pretty significant since one of the main plot points of the series deals with the mystery surrounding the death of Barry's mother for which his father has been falsely convicted of even though Barry knows he is innocent. The CW's full official description of the show follows:

THE FLASH
Barry Allen was just 11 years old when his mother was killed in a bizarre and terrifying incident and his father was falsely convicted of the murder. With his life changed forever by the tragedy, Barry was taken in and raised by Detective Joe West, the father of Barry’s best friend, Iris. Now, Barry has become a brilliant, driven and endearingly geeky CSI investigator, whose determination to uncover the truth about his mother’s strange death leads him to follow up on every unexplained urban legend and scientific advancement that comes along. Barry’s latest obsession is a cutting edge particle accelerator, created by visionary physicist Harrison Wells and his S.T.A.R. Labs team, who claim that this invention will bring about unimaginable advancements in power and medicine. However, something goes horribly wrong during the public unveiling, and when the devastating explosion causes a freak storm, many lives are lost and Barry is struck by lightning. After nine months in a coma, Barry awakens to find his life has changed once again – the accident has given him the power of super speed, granting him the ability to move through Central City like an unseen guardian angel. Though initially excited by his newfound powers, Barry is shocked to discover he is not the only “meta-human” who was created in the wake of the accelerator explosion – and not everyone is using their new powers for good. In the months since the accident, the city has seen a sharp increase in missing people, unexplained deaths and other strange phenomena. Barry now has a renewed purpose – using his gift of speed to protect the innocent, while never giving up on his quest to solve his mother’s murder and clear his father’s name. For now, only a few close friends and associates know that Barry is literally the fastest man alive, but it won’t be long before the world learns what Barry Allen has become…The Flash.

The series stars Grant Gustin(“Glee,” “Arrow”) as Barry Allen/The Flash, Candice Patton (“The Game”) as Iris West, Rick Cosnett (“The Vampire Diaries”) as Eddie Thawne,Danielle Panabaker (“Necessary Roughness,” “Justified”)as Caitlin Snow, Carlos Valdes (“Once” on Broadway ) as Cisco Ramon, with Tom Cavanagh (“Ed,” “Eli Stone”)as Harrison Wells and Jesse L. Martin (“Law & Order”)as Detective West.THE FLASH is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Tomorrow People,” “Green Lantern”), Andrew Kreisberg (“Arrow,” “Eli Stone”), David Nutter (“Arrow,” “Game of Thrones”)and Sarah Schechter. The pilot was directed by David Nutter. This series is based upon characters published by DC Entertainment.

First Look At The Cast Of Marvel's Next Event Axis

$

During last month's C2E2Marvel revealed it's next big event AXIS with nothing more than a rough logo image featuring the Avengers "A" and the X-Men's "X" logos. The teaser image was seen at the conclusion of the Wolverine: 3 Months To Die Panel at C2E2. Now thanks to the cover of  Diamonds June Previews we have our first official image of the actual event.

In my initial report on the event I stated that I thought this an Avengers Vs X-Men sequel of sorts that would feature the Red Skull and from the Previews cover it appears that I was right. The difference with this event being that instead of a "Vs" book, this will be an "&" event where the two teams work together.

The Previews cover shows half of the Jim Chueng image which features the villains Green Goblin, Loki,Sabertooth,Dr. Doom,Carnage with the Red Skull front and center in an Onslaught inspired costume. At the bottom of the cover you can see there is more to the image which lines up with the Special Edition New York City Comic Convention poster that features the heroes Storm,Thor,Luke Cage, Deadpool,Medusawith Iron Man front and center.

While the image for the Previews cover and Special Edition Con poster features art by Jim Cheung, no artist has been attached to the books yet, but Rick Remender has been named writer.

From the pages of GODSTORM comes the next chapter for Venus. Miss Astrid Venus is a powerful fashion magazine director who loves that people worship her over her control of fashion, but that isn't enough for the Roman goddess Venus. The Greek and Roman gods of legend are real! They live amongst us, hiding in plain sight as humans. Some of these gods, such as Zeus and Athena, work to keep humanity safe from evil, while others are hell-bent on returning to the ways of old, when gods were worshipped. It's Tough Being A Ninja Princess

SOMETIMES IT’S HARD TO BE A PRINCESS..A NINJA PRINCESS,THAT IS.

JETTA Creator brings Ninjitsu action and teen angst to Action Lab Entertainment.

Shianndrea Toshigawa is just your average, ordinary ninja -in -training. On the run from her father, the Emperor Terminus and the Azumi Ninja Clan, Shianndrea trains with the legendary Toshigawa Clan to embrace the mysterious power within her. Shinobi: Ninja Princess is written, illustrated and created by mastermind Martheus Wade. A prequel to Wade’s most famous creation Jetta: Tales of The Toshigawa, Shinobi; Ninja Princess explores her formative years as Shianndrea struggles against her destiny .The all ages action/adventure series takes a manga inspired spin on this classic coming of age story and returns to a universe of warring clans and high adventure.

Wade’s approach is accessible to readers who may cross over from that realm but it manages to stay just light enough to attract the casual reader.  Wade, who’s work has been featured in graphic novels like Mail Order Ninja and The Bad Girls Club for IDW Publishing, is joined by his wife and frequent collaborator, Janet Wade(Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa, Turra: Gun Angel) and features a variant cover by Tressina Bowling(Hateink , Princeless: Short Stories for Warrior Women).

Shinobi: Ninja Princess debuts in August at comic shops everywhere.

At The Movies with Jay and Kat: June 2014 "Best Sellers, DinoBots, and more"

$
0
0

Kat and Jay are both TV/Movie junkies, and wanted to team up on a feature every month to share their thoughts on upcoming movies. Check out Kat and Jay's thoughts on the key movies coming out in June. June has some big movies coming out like The Fault in Our Stars, Transformers 4,  and more.

June 6th

The Fault in Our Stars

Kat's Thoughts:This has to be one of my most anticipated movies of the year. Ever since I saw the first trailer I have fallen in love with this story. A girl has cancer and meets a boy who is in remission. She believes she is a time bomb waiting to go off, but he shows her how to live life.

If you have been reading our feature spot for a while you will know when Divergent came out I was really hesitant about the movie because I didn't think Shailene Woodley could pull it off. When I actually saw the movie I was proven wrong. She humanized the character and that movie proved to me that she will do a great job as Hazel Grace in The Fault in Our Stars

I haven't read the book on purpose. I want to see the movie first and have the total shock value of the story, but I am sure I will read John Green's book after I see the film. We have to support the YouTube community.

Jay's Thoughts: I agree with Kat on this. This movie is going to be a big movie, from the first trailer I wanted to see it, and I usually don't feel that way with these types of movies. Every month I talk about that Date Movie, and I think this is THE Date Movie for June.

Edge of Tomorrow

Kat's Thoughts:This looks like a generic Tom Cruise movie. These seem to come out every year and every year I am not interested. I don't think this will do great in the box office especially since it will be going up against the very anticipated The Fault in Our Stars

Jay's Thoughts: This movie seems like a mix of Groundhog's Day (Only for repeating the day) and Minority Report. Minority Report did pretty well, and this is from the director of The Bourne Identity and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, so the vision seems to be there, but does Tom Cruise wield the star power he once did?

I think this movie has two things going for it: 1.) This is Action Movie Season, guys go to the movies more in the summer and they want to see action movies. 2.) It's coming out the same weekend as The Fault in Our Stars. This is the total opposite of that movie and other than Transformers this is the only other big action movie out this month, so it could draw that crowd. I think this will be at least 2nd place for this week.

Obvious Child

Jay's Thoughts: This is a Rom-Com that doesn't seem like either. I don't this appealing to the date crowd that a Rom-Com usually attracts, there isn't enough of that romance for the girls, or the comedy for the guys. I didn't laugh at one joke or one scene in this trailer. I think it might find an audience but I expect nothing major from it.

June 13th

22 Jump Street

Kat's thoughts:I have heard great things about 21 Jump Street, and I hope to watch it before I see 22 Jump Street. This seems like a fun sequel. I hope to see this in theaters.

Jay's Thoughts:I seen 21 Jump Street and it is a HUGE departure from the TV series, but I think it has it's audience. This is coming out at the beginning of summer. Schools just let out, a bunch of teenage boys are going to be going to the movies and they want this type of comedy. This isn't the Rom-Com, this isn't the traditional comedy this is what I call mindless comedy, but not in a bad way. This is a comedy that deals with like fart jokes and physical humor that makes fun of itself also the kind of movie you want to see to just laugh and have fun.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

Kat's Thoughts:I have not had the chance to watch the first How to Train Your Dragon, but I really want to see it because the sequel looks great and I have heard great things about the first one. I liked that they made the main characters grow with the audience. They are a little older and can't wait to see what adventure they get into.

June 20th

Think Like A Man Too

Jay's Thoughts: This movie seems like that fun summer movie right along with The Hangover and Bridesmaids and is pretty much a hybrid of those movies. There are some good names in this movie so I think it will do well.

This is a Steve Harvey (as an Executive Producer) movie, the guy has been enjoying a good bit of spotlight now and I think his name on this movie will help get people in the seats, especially with the success of The Family Feud, The Steve Harvey Show, his Radio Show, and his books Think Like A Man, Act Like A Lady.

Jersey Boys

Kat's Thoughts: Many years ago I saw Jersey Boys the Broadway show. It is still on Broadway and very popular, but I remember almost falling asleep when I saw it. It definitely has an age gap. I remember I saw the show with my grandparents and they loved it.

I think the movie will be the same. Younger people who didn't grow up in the time period of Frankie Valley and the 4 Seasons probably won't like the film. But I can see a lot of senior citizens filling out the seats.

Jay's Thoughts: I kind of agree and disagree with Kat on this movie. I do think a lot of this audience is going to be people who lived in that era, but I think there is an audience outside of that age group. A lot of people are captured by that time like the people who watch Mad Men, and other similar era shows and movies. So I think this will do well across the board but it won't make a huge splash either.

The Rover

Jay's Thoughts: Hmmmm this movie I don't know. I don't find the appeal in it at all. This seems like a drama/slow-action/suspense/thriller movie. The premise from the trailer is that this guy basically gets car-jacked and the brother of one of the car-jackers is left behind. The guy has nothing to lose and wants his car back so he takes the brother with him to get his car back. I don't think there is much more to this story. The thing I think will get some people in the theater is the cast that include Guy Pierce and Robert Pattinson

Transformers 4: Age of Extinction

Kat's Thoughts: I am not a big Transformers fan. I didn't really grow up with the franchise, but I am familiar with the franchise and their big fan base. I saw the first two movies and wasn't really impressed. But this does seem better than the first three with a new cast and a rebooted feel to the movie franchise. I don't know if I would go out and rush to the theaters to see this movie, but it may be good enough for me to watch it on Netflix

Jay's Thoughts: "Michael Bay has killed the Transformers franchise" and things like that have been going around since the 1st Transformers came out, yet here we are with a 4th movie. Transformers is an unapologetic action movie. This is going to be big. This is coming out the last weekend of June, right before the big 4th of July weekend. Oh yeah did I forget to mention that this has the DINOBOTS in it? Yeah this movie is coining in on one of the most popular set of Transformers ever with the Dinobots so I see this movie doing really well in the box office.

Snowpiercer

Jay's Thoughts: I saw this trailer and I honestly could care less about this movie. Nothing in it grabs me and says "wow this is a movie I must see." Basically we screwed up a global warming experiment and now everyone is riding on a train that circles the Earth. Then it goes Hunger Games on a train from there. Everyone is separated by class and there is a revolt. Like I said Hunger Games on a train, but I don't think this has the appeal to that audience that Hunger Games does.
