Archie Comics Welcomes New Character to Riverdale

Spunky fashionista Harper - who happens to be disabled - makes debut in June’s ARCHIE #656

Archie Comicshas made a name for itself as a vibrant, innovative publisher that is focused on representing today’s world through its comics. Iconic characters like Archie, Jughead, Betty & Veronica, and Reggie have stayed true to their history while residing in a modern world. That continues today. Following in the tradition of modern and engaging character debuts like Kevin Keller, Archie Comics is proud to give fans a first look at the latest addition to the Riverdale family: Harper.

Cousin to posh socialite Veronica Lodge, Harper arrives in Riverdale and introduces the Archie gang to something they’ve never dealt with: a friend who is disabled. But while Harper does have a disability, it does not define her, and Archie, his friends, and fans around the world will be treated to her dynamic personality. Harper teaches the Archies an important lesson: that something you think can hold you back can make you that much stronger.
Harper is the latest in a long line of characters we’ve introduced to make Riverdale feel like a city in today’s world. Harper is, first and foremost, a funny, fashionable and witty teenager. The fact that she’s disabled is only one part of her story, and we’re excited to welcome her to Riverdale and Archie Comics."
– Jon Goldwater Archie Comics Co-CEO/Publisher

The idea for Harper came out of a conversation between writer/artist Dan Parent and longtime Archie fan and author Jewel Kats, who is also disabled. From that initial idea Harper was born.

Harper’s debut, ARCHIE #656, hits 6/18.

QUESTIONING THE SANITY OF SUPERHEROES IN ACTION LAB’S ‘THE F1RST HERO’

A WORLD OF SUPERPOWER-FUELED CRIMINAL INSANITY GIVES BIRTH TO ITS FIRST SUPERHERO.

What if everyone who ever had superpowers had gone insane and became a threat to society?  If one man were to manifest powers yet somehow keep his sanity, would he choose to use his new abilities to help the innocent?  Or would he keeps his powers a secret to protect himself and his loved ones from a world that hates and fears his kind?  These are the questions asked in THE F1RST HERO, the latest release from Action Lab Entertainment.

Written by radio host/pop culture commentator and professional wrestler Anthony Ruttgaizer, the series is couched in real world events.  Jacob Roth, a US Marine serving in Afghanistan, is just a few days shy of returning to the States.  In the heat of battle, Roth discovers that he is an “Extrahuman”, a being whose extraordinary abilities normally come at a horrible price.  But even if he masters his new powers, Roth must still deal with a society that will see him as a ticking time bomb, easier to dispose of than to defuse.

Ruttgaizer doesn’t shy away from controversy, tackling real world history in establishing a grounded setting for THE F1RST HERO, and he has assembled an amazingly talent art team to help him tell this tale. Anthony is joined by artist Phillip Sevy (a runner-up in Top Cow’s 2013 Talent Hunt), colorist/letterer Fred C. Stressing(Adventure Time Annual, Hello Kitty), with covers by Lee Moder(Wonder Woman, Shinku) and an issue 1 variant cover by Jamal Igle (Terminator, G.I. Joe).  The first story arc runs for four monthly issues starting in August.

Kat's Pull list for 6/4/14 - "AWW YEAH TITANS!"

Kat talks about all the comics she is getting this week. Check out what Kat is excited for in this week's pull list.

DC Comics

Batman Eternal #9

Batman Eternal has had some weak issues lately, but over all I have been enjoying this weekly series. Looking forward to seeing more and I always get excited to read this title.

Earth 2 #24

I have been very impressed with Earth 2 and ever since Tom Taylor took over the title it has become one of my favorite titles to read. Might I also add that Lois Lane as Red Tornado is brilliant for this title.

Green Arrow #32

I always have mixed feelings about Green Arrow because I liked the title, but not as a Green Arrow title. It is a great read, but this is not my Ollie Queen. This is a start of a new arc. So, hopefully Ollie's team will become more interesting.

Futures End #5

Even though the last issue of Futures End was weak, overall this series has been a pleasant surprise. Looking forward to reading more of this event.

Tiny Titans: Return to the Tress House #1

YES TINY TITANS RETURNS! You guys don't know how excited I am for this title to return. I have all 50 issues of Tiny Titans and read the title from issue 1. It is such a fun title that references pre New 52 stories.

The Vampire Diaries #6

I did drop Vampire Diaries, but this issue looked interesting. At least we have Elena and company in this issue. Also might I add it was a small week for me so it was easy to add another comic on my pull list.

Marvel

Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-man #2

The last issue ended with a bang and I can't wait to see where this story arc goes from here. The rest of the ultimate reboot has been disappointing, but glad to see that Miles Morales' title has stayed consistent to its previous series.

Superior Foes of Spider-man #12

It seems like forever since this title came out, wait it actually has been forever. The last issue came out in April and now this issue is coming out in June. I hope this series doesn't fall through the cracks because Superior Spider-man is now over.

Vertigo

The Wake #9

I loved the first part of The Wake, but the second part has been lacking. I hope this penultimate issue can pick up the story to where it was when act one ended.

Zenescope

Grimm Fairy Tales #98

I picked up the last issue of Grimm Fairy Tales and thought it was a solid read. Excited to say Grimm Fairy Tales is officially on my pull list, right in time for issue 100.

Batman: The Dark Knight #28 Review: Father Knows Best

$

By: Nicole D'Andria

Its been awhile since I took a look at the lackluster Batman: The Dark Knight. There are so many more Batman-related series than there need to be. The only reason this used to stand out was because there would be cameos of Justice League characters like Superman, Wonder Woman and Flash. I gave up reviewing it as of issue 6. Since then, the stories have mostly been bland and forgettable. However, this issue introduces a new villain that I have to talk about.

There have been several Man-Bat related murders lately and, after tracking down Kirk Langstrom, Batman realizes he isn’t to blame. But who is?

Unfortunately, there is no real mystery here. Almost immediately writer Gregg Hurwitz tells us who is committing these crimes as an even more powerful Man-Bat (this could be considered a SPOILER despite being included in the preview so be warned): the original Man-Bat’s father, Abraham Langstrom.

This is Langstrom’s first appearance and he’s thrown at us full force with no mystery about what kind of person he is. The idea of having Langstrom’s dad become Man-Bat isn’t very original. His wife has already become Man-Bat (Woman-Bat?) in the past.

What makes the decision worse is Abraham’s monologue. It does do a good job introducing his character, but it’s a very generic, rich-business man who literally sees people as dollar signs. He outright says this and I actually liked how blunt he was in his thoughts. Still, not very original. If it had been executed better I feel like this character would have been much stronger. Also, prolonging the mystery would have made it more compelling. The scene following Abraham’s evil inner-monologue is Batman figuring out he is Man-Bat. At the very least, this moment should have come beforehand.

The greatest moment in this otherwise mediocre issue was the conversation (though it’s more like a confrontation) between Abraham and his son Kirk. If I ever make a Top Ten Worst Comic Book Dads list, after only an issue I feel like he would earn a place on it. His dialogue is venomous towards his son and he says he isn’t against killing him.

The artwork by Ethan Van Sciver is also not used well. The art itself is solid, but that does not make up for the fact that what is being drawn is boring. For example, there’s a page worth of five panels that shows the same image of Abraham Langstrom doing push-ups. Then, a couple pages later, there’s a couple of panels shared between Batman and Alfred where they barely move. I found myself reading the dialogue without glancing at the pictures much. A good comic should be able to weave the two together. Instead, I feel like there are several pages that are a waste of space.

The story feels like a repeat of the previous Man-Bat stories with a new and promising character that wasn’t executed very well but still had his moments. Abraham’s blunt nature makes me want to enjoy his character. I just wish the story was executed a bit better. I’m hoping he will be redeemed in the next issue, which is also the final issue of Batman: The Dark Knight.

I give Batman: The Dark Knight #28 a 6.0/10.

The Reyes Countdown #9 Week Of 5/21/14

By: Reyes

Hey Comic Book fans! This is a series where I (Jay Reyes) review every book I got in one week and pick my favorite.

Batman Eternal #7 (Number 10 and Worst Pick of The Week)

This week’s comics were not all that bad, and for the most part I enjoyed all of them. But this issue was quite bad. Seeing Catwoman and Penguin in the same room together is cool because it reminds me of Batman Returns but other than that I really didn't find this issue all too entertaining. The pacing and the story have just been so off for this series and I hope that this just gets better. This is the only Scott Snyder book I’m not really feeling at all.

Original Sin #2 (Number 9)

This issue just didn't work for me, I love the fact that the real Nick Fury is back and I love the use of Z-List Characters but the story isn't really clicking for me yet. I really want to enjoy this event but I can’t get into it. The art’s great though so that's something right? Out of the two big event books that came out this week this just seemed mediocre in nature.

Uncanny X-men #21 (Number 8)

This book wasn't all that bad actually, but I just have a bland feeling while reading it. I really like that Cyclops might be getting a second chance with the Jean Grey School and I’m hoping that with the future death of Wolverinethat Cyclops and his X-Men can merge. The only problems I had with this issue were with the writing, I hated how stupid Storm was depicted because it was so painfully obvious that Cyke was not in control of his powers and does she really think that he would just attack the school at all, I’m just so done with Schism at this point that it’s painfully hard to read some of the x books. I really love Bachalo’s art and I hope he continues to draw for this series but other than that I might just hold off on reading this series for a bit..

Supergirl #31 (Number 7)

This issue wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either it was just solid. I liked the art but I felt like there were a lot of boring spells or at least things that I didn't care about. The parts that involved what was going on with Supergirl’s supporting cast on Earth really didn't appeal to me at all. The only parts I actually enjoyed were the Red Lantern parts and that came in a few short scattered pieces. This issue got me excited for the next issue of Red Lanterns.

Batman and Frankenstein #31 (Number 6)

Another solid issue that kept me interested and had me wanting for the next issue. Damianis by far my favorite Robin so I’m actually find myself rooting for Ra’s Al Ghul to resurrect Damian. The continued unusual pairings in this series are fun and I hope they continue, I very much enjoyed the tension between Frankenstein and Batman since their last real encounter made Batman look like a giant @$$#ole. I’m hoping that the next issue is even better than this issue.

Sinestro #2  (Top 5!)

Sinestro is by far one of my favorite DCU villains of all time up there with Joker and Lex but I really like the approach they're taking with him. This issue starts directly where last issue ended with Sinestro’s Green Lantern daughter captured by Akrillo. (SPOILER ALERT Highlight To Read) Of Course Sinestro can’t allow this and Akrillo is dispatch a little too easy in my opinion. I get that Sinestro is supposed to be the Mike Tyson of the Yellow Lanterns but I would have liked the fight to be a bit more challenging. The art for this book is freaking great and fits the tone perfectly. Cullen Bunn also continues to amaze me and this isn't the only book that he’s on that is in my Top 5.

Magneto #4 (Number 4)

The other Cullen Bunnpenned comic on this list is Magneto #4. I feel like every time Magneto and Sinestro come out they’re in my Top 5 and Cullen Bunndeserves some props for making a series about two major villains of their respective universes too damn good. You feel Magneto’s struggle in this issue and you see the hardship in his face. The art is also really great in this issue Javier Fernandez draws a mean Magneto. The violence in this series is phenomenal and this issue captured it perfectly when Magneto uses barbed wire in a very interesting way.

Invincible #111 (Number 3)

I have not read a single issue of this event and after reading this issue I need to catch up because this was a blast. The action was incredible and I was super shocked that I even liked this because I bought it on a whim. The only real problem I had with this issue was the fact that I was lost and kind of confused throughout the whole issue, I get that the 111 thing is a joke but I really wanted to know what happened to before so I guess I’ll be getting trades.

Justice League #30 (Number 2)

The delay of Justice League and Forever Evil has really hurtDC as of late, but the wait was well worth it because I had a crap ton of fun reading the ending of Forever Evil. The now redeemed Lex Luthor is going to have to jump through hoops to get the Justice League to trust him but thank god he’s a billionaire and he can just make them a new Watchtower in space. I loved this issue for many reasons and it has all to do with the ego maniacal man himself Lex Luthor. I really can’t wait to see how this turns out because Lex gets what he wants eventually and I don’t think Superman would appreciate being on the same team as Lex but the Big Blue Man of Steel has to get over it. I honestly found nothing wrong with this issue and I liked it a lot.

Forever Evil #7 (Number 1 and Best Pick of The Week)

What I said for Justice League #30 pretty much goes for this issue as well except I liked this better. Forever Evil went on for forever but now that forever is finally over the DCU has to move on with what has occurred in this issue. (SPOILER ALERT Highlight To Read)Nightwing is dead and Dick Grayson lives, Lex Luthor has a Robin ala Ted Kord, and the Anti-Monitor is going to Curb stomp the new 52. In all this event was very well done in my opinion and I look forward to re-reading it on a later date.

Marvel New Look: Rocket Raccoon #1

Eisner-Award Winner Skottie Young Goes Cosmic in ROCKET RACCOON #1!

This July, blast off with the smallest Guardian of the Galaxy (packing the biggest gun) in ROCKET RACCOON #1– written and drawn by Eisner-award winning storyteller Skottie Young! Today, Marvel has shared with ComicFrontline new look at this highly anticipated ongoing series launching ahead of one of the biggest movies of the Summer!

As defenders of the cosmos go, Rocket Raccoon has faced his fair share of battles. He’s been a hero to the weak, a champion of the good, and a protector the innocent. Not to mention a heartthrob to many intergalactic species across the galaxy. But is he ready to be…a fugitive?!

Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, Rocket and his pal Groot’s high-flying life of adventure and heroism may be a thing of the past as he’ll soon find himself on the run and on the wrong side of the law. And the authorities aren’t the only one’s hot on his TAIL! (Too easy). An intergalactic boxing match, fierce alien creatures, and  a deadly militia of Rocket’s ex-girlfriends known only as the Exterminators– and that’s just the FIRST ISSUE!
“Despite Rocket’s attitude and antics he has a heart under there. He has some things he may or may not want to need in his life. He’s going to have to examine that. When you’re believed to be the last of your kind left in this galaxy or all the galaxies, that’s something you carry with you. That plays a role in the way you operate. We’ll see him explore that a little bit.

But ya know, right after that he’ll probably shoot some stuff.”
 – Skottie Young

It’s one raccoon (but whatever you do, DO NOT call him a raccoon) against the entire galaxy  this July as superstar creator Skottie Young brings his A-game! And the galaxy won’t even know what hit it! You do not want to miss the highly anticipated ROCKET RACCOON #1 when it blasts its way into comic shops and digital devices this July!

Zenescope Creators Speak… Grimm Fairy Tales #100!

Usually to promote a book a publisher has a P.R. Director send out a solicitation in a press release written by the P.R. Director, but Zenescope Entertainment is breaking from traditional industry promotional practices and cutting out the middle man by allowing the Creators Speak with the fans about their July books.

With the cut-off for Pre-Order dates for July releases fast-approaching the Co-Founder Of Zenescope Entertainment and Co-Writer behind Zenescope Entertainment's historic GRIMM FAIRY TALES #100 Joe Brusha has a message for readers and retailers letting you know why you should Pre-Order this book NOW!
“It’s hard for me to believe we are getting ready to publish our 100th issue of Grimm Fairy Tales. It seems like not that long ago we publishing issue #1 and then trying to figure out how we were going to find enough fairy tales to make it to issue #25. It’s been a blast writing and planning the series and seeing how it has evolved over the last eight years. As excited as I am to be publishing issue #100, I’m even more excited for the direction the series is going to take in #101. It’s going to be a great jumping on point for new readers and I think current fans are going to love it even more. The best way to describe I can describe it is Harry Potter meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
- Joe Brusha, Zenescope Co-Founder and Co-Writer of GFT #100

Grimm Fairy Tales #100 is available for pre-order at your local comic book retailer NOW!

The landmark issue of one of the hottest indie comics of the past decade has arrived!

It all began with Sela Mathers, the Guardian of the Nexus, a woman tasked with teaching misguided humans right from wrong. But Sela's struggles, her ups and downs, the effects of those she's helped and those she's lost to darkness, will all culminate in this epic 100th issue!Sela will take on the biggest threat she's ever faced as the Dark Queen looks to plunge the Grimm Universe into an Age of Darkness.

100th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL – FANTASTIC FOUR #1!

This July, do the time warp and fast forward to the year 2061 as Marvel celebrates the upcoming 100th Anniversary of some of its greatest characters in this new head-spinning limited series! Today, MarvelComics has shared with Comic Frontline a First Look at the 100th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL – FANTASTIC FOUR #1, from fan favorite creators Jen Van Meter& Joanna Estep.

Witness the first family of the future in a way you’ve never seen them before! What does the Fantastic Four look like in the year 2061? Reed Richards,Doctor Doom and Johnny Storm are all gone – presumed dead. The Fantastic Four has been discredited in the eyes of the public – no longer the champions they once were. Now, a new Fantastic Four will rise up – comprised of Doom’s granddaughter and the Richards-Bannertwins. But when a key player in the first family’s past resurfaces – it will have earth-shattering effects on their future!
“We’ve had a bunch of anniversaries lately at Marvel. Most of our character have had their 50th anniversary in the pasts couple years, We’re right in the middle of Marvel’s 75th anniversary as well. It was [former Senior Editor] Steve Wacker’s idea originally that it would be fun to tackle a 100th anniversary, to imagine our characters as they might be in 40 or 50 years.”
 – Nick Lowe, Senior Editor

Each week in July sees a new 100th Anniversary Special featuring fan-favorite creators and rising stars as they envision the Marvel Universe of the far flung future! Don’t miss the opening salvo in this mind-bending new weekly limited series when the 100th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL – FANTASTIC FOUR #1 hits comic shops this July!
